  1. Franchy probably didn't even have 140 PAs but it seemed like 140 games. Santana pinch hit close to 140 ABs in the playoffs and struck out every time.
  2. ... hits homers and strikes out -- what more do you want from a big leaguer?
  3. I didn't say one-for-one; he's actually more likely to be part of a multi-player before the season -- whenever that is. And even if, any pitcher they get is also more likely to be someone we've never seen before or maybe heard of.
  4. No, more likely to be platooned with Casas, or traded for pitching as part of an overhaul... or rotated at DH if JD is dealt.
  5. In his last five years as a Red Sox regular, Bradley was a slightly below-average hitter and an above-average fielder. He was never a platoon player... though his career may soon be trending there. If Suzuki is an unlikely option, maybe Bloom's first big contract goes to a guy he already likes: Schwarber, who will play LF, with Verdugo sliding over to RF, with Duran as the fourth outfielder. Maybe the Sox are counting on continued progress from Dalbec to fill the righty power void (from trading Renfroe), for now. If midseason changes involve promoting Casas, then other personnel changes will probably come with that, as well.
  6. Maybe there should be a special website -- let's call it talksox -- for posters to report anyone with a critical Red Sox theory.
  7. He weighs 265, so it would probably take a triple team of El Guapo, Big Panda, and an enraged Incredible Houck.
  8. Hopefully, the same can be said about the rotation and bullpen...
  9. I also feel guilty to families and friends of guys I named, but not to the players, themselves. First, all won World Series rings (Smoltz, Gagne, Morales, Mendoza), so a few boos come with the badge, along with the ultimate cheers and hardware achieved at the pinnacle of their careers. Second, opinions posted on this forum carry the kind of credibility that arguably comes from among the Worst Fanatics Who Never Played for the Red Sox or Any Other Professional Sports Team... ... and if we're not the worst, the best we can say is we're tied for the Best Who Never Made It.
  10. Mazza gave up the longest home run I've ever seen, and then the Rays traded for him...
  11. Maybe these guys don't qualify, since most were winding it down, but ones that came to mind include Eric Gagne and Ramiro Mendoza, two relievers with 6.75 ERAs in Boston, and Franklin Morales for one postseason game. But none were as bad as John Smoltz: 8 starts, 40 IP, 8.33 ERA... ps. I'm ignoring pitchers from 2020, because this thread is ostensibly about big leaguers.
  12. Well, we didn't; news media outlets reported on it this week. The only real news is top Red Sox minor league prospects are practicing together. If that's our spring training for awhile, at least we get to see the progress of some guys who may star in the hopefully-near future.
  13. At least this rumor is news this week... even if it's just filed under Suzuki reportedly showing some interest in Boston.
  14. Makes sense -- maybe the "tax" is that money not spent on players goes back into the general fund (to the other teams). But how does the language differentiate parts of a team's budget? They still have to pay non-uniformed employees, and sub-contractors to mow the lawn, paint the walls, etc.
  15. That doesn't excuse 65 pairs of shoes in the closet. On Footwear-reference.com, her WARpath is 130.
  16. (for Aaron Judge... Monster-to-Kike-to-Xander-to-Plawecki): Swimming through Sick Lullabies, Choking on your Alibis, But it's just the Price I pay, Destiny is calling Me Open up my Eager Eyes, 'cause I'm Mr. Brightside
  17. ... wives. I put one on a pedestal once, and now she has a walk-in closet full of shoes.
  18. Seattle is also close to the North Coast, LA close enough to the South Coast... well, at least the N and S borders. These guys encompass the compass.
  19. My point was that Gooden was on a Hall of Fame track when his career started -- arguably the greatest teen pitcher of the century (record Ks, FIP), definitely the greatest 20-year old of all-time -- before unhealthy lifestyles derailed his career.
  20. The best players from the era will all get in, eventually. There are now at least five guys with plaques already whose bodies and stats both grew proportionately, as well as others whose careers overlapped and extended during that time -- old men throwing no-hitters or playing every single inning of every single game. Rules or not, the users -- as well as fans and writers -- all know what they were doing was giving them an unfair advantage. Harold Baines said something interesting the other day on MLB channel... to paraphrase: it really became noticeable in the dog days of August, when mere mortals are always dragging and banged up... and suddenly, vets were showing up with renewed energy.
  21. Ironic that so many careers and thus teams were disrupted or destroyed by this addiction -- even lives, as you mention -- and yet, fans and writers care way more about the scandal that immediately followed, when players were trying to enhance performances on the field (and not after the games). I can't recall this drug usage affecting votes for the Hall, either, except that it certainly prevented further achievements and probable enshrinement for guys like Gooden, Parker, etc. Still, Raines made it in, most likely because he had a mentor like Andre Dawson help him kick the habit...
  22. Here, I'll list the important facts for you: David Ortiz just tied Babe Ruth, as a Hall of Famer who won three World Series rings for Boston. They're now tied as the second-best Red Sox winners of all-time... to the immortal Harry Hoopaaaaahhh (four rings)!!!!
  23. This is all implied; Suz supposedly prefers stepping on large snails at night instead of tripping over invasive Burmese pythons...
  24. Even three would be a record in Boston for Bloom. Come on, Union, shake on it!
  25. I hope it's true, and not just because he could be a good player. The contract alone will be fascinating; will it be more than two years plus an option? If so, will it re-open the floodgates (or bank vault) in Boston? Does it signal that ownership is happy with the new CBA? Can Bloom stop at just one potato chip?
