  1. Free agency changed the landscape for sure, but it didn't all happen at once in the 1970s. Big markets stockpiled talent, but small markets were still able to compete -- Cincinnati was actually right at the top in attendance most of the decade, behind only LA. Cincy, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Oakland all won titles after the mid-70s. The Pirates had good clubs in the early 90s, but after Bonds left never finished first again. The Bucs, Reds, A's and O's made it to 12 World Series in the '70s, five in the '80s, and zero since... in 32 years.
  2. So sick of the blame game. It's like a requirement for anyone running for anything. I once slammed the door in the face of a candidate who showed up waving a pamphlet all about his opponent and how bad the other guy was. I told him, "Come back when you know what YOU are going to do to make the world better." Never returned.
  3. He meant fans are at the top of the consideration list of those the owners least consider.
  4. Nobody hates the Jeter Yankees and the Jeter fistpump and the Jeter Gold Gloves and the Jeter Fox Cam that followed him around for 9 innings every night more than me. But he's not walking away from the Marlins because he wanted them to tank again.
  5. Jeter didn't quit Miami; the Marlins quit on Jeter.
  6. Then they'd have to let Judge go in free agency... because the Jeter Cam would be focused again on the real thing.
  7. I liked the team pullover look that Tito popularized. Anything is better than wearing a suit and tie, like in other sports. You're running up and down the sidelines of a sweaty, athletic game -- not sitting at a business meeting. For that matter, nobody should have to wear a tie ever. Unless women also have to -- then it's a true dress code that doesn't break gender bias laws.
  8. My vote goes to allowing base umps down the foul lines to check the check; those bad angle calls 90 feet away only add to the length of games and contribute to more strikeouts every year. Second dumbest: Velcro.
  9. Yankee fans were just confused by Earle. When they looked closely, they saw no real need for Combs... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Earle_b_combs.jpg
  10. Some of us have also been pointing this out about Bloom since he got here. What if the new, post-CBA tactic is to only spend "big" on buying out arb years of pre-arb players... like the Rays did with Wander? Maybe the first longterm contract Bloom offers is to Casas a year from now (presumably, after Tris proves he's a big leaguer), and then Bello, Yorke, Mayer, etc. whenever they arrive... How cool would Bloom look in two or three years if he has his entire Red Sox core of sustained contenders locked up for the next decade for less money combined than the Yankees will owe Correa?
  11. "I just hope the fans understand what we're fighting for," said Ian Happ. This fan has witnessed enough fighting all over the country and in others the past two years. Play.
  12. Gordon was MVP in 1942, ahead of Triple Crown winner Ted Williams -- though in retrospect, Joe was second to Mr. Ballgame in WAR. However, according to the Yankees scout who signed him, Gordon was "at his best when it meant the most and the going was toughest." That might not mean much to some modern fans convinced that such qualitative data is meaningless... now try telling that to guys next to him in foxholes back in the real war.
  13. ... a bat fossil can't ever flap its wings again.
  14. But he is going to give Johny that part in the new war movie...
  15. Come on, Moon - you know pitchers are always ahead of hitters this time of year... if only there was a this time this year.
  16. Sometimes the grass is greener is just shiny paint on artificial turf. I wish I had said that in the 80s (I may have, but can't remember much of that decade).
  17. There's a good chance some in the organization knew that when he was reacquired. No one here has ever said Bradley's even a good hitter, just that he's a big league centerfielder. Career bWAR since 2013, 800 games in CF: 1. Trout, 2. Cain, 3. Jackie Bradley Junior. To be fair, Trout rates almost twice as good as Cain, who rates twice as good as JBJ; also, Kiermaier just missed the minimum. Trout 65.1, Cain 35, Kiermaier 30.4, JBJ 17.6, Pillar 16.5, Kike 15.4 (combined total at all his positions), Hamilton 10.4, Michael Taylor 6.1.
  18. .528 in new uni in new parks vs. new pitchers... .900 in old uni, parks, and pitchers. Some posters might refuse to consider adjustment factors, but does anyone really think a career professional completely forgot how to hit in one year? Maybe Bloom and Cora don't think Jackie is absolutely done at age 32... maybe to them, familiarity breeds content.
  19. Good, that must mean they're close to an agreement, and will need the whole next week to pay all remaining available free agents... ... right?
  20. So then does Bloom have to trade Casas or Yorke? Or is there someone else, like Bello, other GMs crave from the system? Got to give up something to get something, and you can be sure teams like Oakland, Cleveland, Miami and Cincy will hold out dealing until they get a guy they really want... ... unless the Sox are all set with Wacha, Hill and half of Paxton in the rotation, and Barnes closing in another August.
  21. I think he meant DH, if JD is traded. Question: when Bloom deals for a decent starting pitcher and/or a decent reliever -- because we all know he doesn't have enough of either yet -- who is the most expendable trade chip: Casas or Dalbec, Yorke or Downs, Verdugo or Duran, JD and subsidies? I'd say Mayer is untouchable right now... unless they sign Correa; but if Bloom is finally going to spend, wouldn't it make more sense to just use free agent money on priorities, like maybe Rodon and Jansen (though I'm not thrilled by the latter)?
  22. It's true, but bitterness still lingers to the fans we were at the time... I felt bad for Billy Buck, but worse for the diehard fans who knew better. Like those of us who noticed Pedro tap his chest and point to the heavens in '03. The biggest rage I had as a teen fan was after Cincinnati's 9th-inning comeback in Game Two of the '75 Series. Down to their last out, the Reds tied it on an infield grounder, then won it on a double off the fence. Can't take your foot off the throat of a team like that... Sox were one out away from going up two games to none. I knew.
  23. Luke's teaching Rafie how to play first.
  24. Remember this well. The stupid no-DH in NL parks rule left the Red Sox' HR leader on the pine. That was the perfect op to bat Baylor... vs. a good lefty pitcher... removing a bad lefty hitter (Buckner was easily the Sox' worst hitter in the postseason, and arguably in the whole MLB... and yet, let's keep batting him third) I said this in '86: Buckner's E was human, but the image of his pitiful legs for weeks on TV -- impeding his swing, and turning him into a wobbly belly-flopping cripple on the bases, contributed to the ultimate loser label that instantly made him a haunted icon forever when he couldn't even bend over to pick up a grounder.
  25. Detroit. Remember, this was a guy who later refused to return to Boston when the Sox tried to reacquire him for a pennant race; instead, he chose to stay with the Tigers, who were going nowhere. Damon is not my friend.
