Tom said at Winter Weekend that a guy in the front office told him the defense cost the team 8 to 9 wins last year. That means with better D, the Sox could've won 86 or 87 games -- and did you know an 84-win club went to the World Series last season? So now it's clear why Boston stood pat this winter: the same basic club, with renewed focus on fielding... why spend more? We're IN! -
Red Sox ownership should be blamed for this entire thread for trading Mookie Betts. When idiots refuse to pay market value to a Hall of Famer in his prime, then fans are left debating who to sign instead, which includes all the other lesser humans who don't feed the homeless in disguise because they're so humble. The last ballplayer fans need to root for is a guy who heaves the baseball over the centerfield fence to show up his manager.

One thing's for sure: the Red Sox' owners are guilty of not paying market value to upgrade their big league pitching staff, causing bored and desperate fans on message boards to discuss turning to accused reprobates as an option.

Tanner was the real problem on the Bears. He'd never make a modern roster with that racist, blasphemous mouth of his (though the Red Sox designed a Pedroia after his fire). Maybe Tanner wouldn't make a good teammate today, but at least he could run for president.

Most on here? One national reporter already predicted the Sox to win 60 games this year. The general consensus among those in the industry is that Boston is all out.

Take it easy. Some people crack jokes to deal with their helplessness. Others enjoy arguing -- even if they've advocated for months for big money free agent signings or trades for actually talented ballplayers. Ultimately, these Red Sox are all big leaguers, and if we chose to, we can watch or even attend big league games to cheer for them. They may change the color of their shirts, or get tattoos we feel mar their appearance... but in the end, they're our Red Sox, and we'll still love them. The owners and front office are counting on us.

A member of the most inciteful Red Sox forum on the net has to be reminded that the best players always play short -- which means they can play anywhere! And the average throw from SS to 1B is twice the distance from the mound to home plate. So the big question is: why hasn't Breslow brought in an expert at converting shortstops to starting pitcher by now? Tom Thumbuphisarse said he meant they were going to "press all levers." PRESS this.

Breslow said this weekend a big part of the build-out will be drafting pitchers -- who usually take about five years to make the majors and establish themselves as big leaguers. That's basically an admission the Red Sox will be wasting Devers' prime; he's only signed for 10 more years...

Seems kind of a waste to have a good closer if he doesn't get a good amount of leads to save. Trading Jansen for a decent prospect should be a priority for the Tank Sox. It also would be a good opportunity to break in a younger guy for the back end: not a lot of high pressure games, some 7th or 8th inning match-ups, then a few saves vs. other non-contenders.

I know some posters despise John Tomase, but he wrote a column today echoing our concerns that "Everything Needs To Go Just Right..." Since every guy who makes the big leagues is one of the best ballplayers in the world... then all of them have the potential to become All-Stars... Boston just needs about six or eight to morph into stars at the same time.

Of course. But any fan can see that good teams are assembled from all the ways of player acquisition. And just like GMs can't empty the farm and swap for big-time talent... nor can they say we're just going to let our homegrown guys mature -- and not supplement them with veteran stars who will establish a winning culture. Especially when it comes to pitching. Seasons should never be forfeited for the future. Teams can't wait until they have good regulars before they recruit good starting pitchers. It all starts with starters.
