  1. Like I said, the way official scorers suddenly and regularly rewarded hits on bobbles and even grounders through the wickets last year, he must have thrown a lot of balls away. Meanwhile, today's latest trade block candidates: the Brewers and White Sox have said they'll listen to offers for anyone on their rosters. Also, Hoskins is a free agent and Castellanos could be dealt... -- let speculation continue! But no Dalbec and Bearclaw for Robert rumors...
  2. Nothing personal, but I don't want either Torres or Donovan for second base. Both had negative dWARs last year; Torres somehow made 15 errors at 2B -- which means he really sucks on D, considering the scorekeeper scam of giving hits on anything not thrown into the stands or Charlie Browned.
  3. Maybe that's the kind of guy who would be worth giving a second chance. He was a 4.2 WAR at shortstop just two years ago, when he led MLB in triples. Dodgers tried him at 2B last summer, where he was errorless in 190 innings. Then again, the Sox already have a bounce-back guy who was a 3.1 WAR two years ago, and 3.3 the year before that in Urias...
  4. Nothing -- except Brez is already talking like he doesn't want a full-time DH. Yoshi seems like he has the kind of bat control where he could just zone in on the Monster and easily hit .300 with tons of singles, bad-bounce doubles and pop-fly HRs that drop over the line. With enough practice and intent, he could even be more effective at it than Devers, because Masa won't try to knock it down. (Raffy won't stop trying, though, so nix any reason or logic)
  5. While he has shown improvement, Duran is not a good MLB centerfielder. By all accounts, Rafaela already is -- and as a prospect who has hit at elite levels on his way to the Show. Duran's best position for Boston may be LF, but so is Yoshida's, and even if the latter gets to DH a lot, he'll still be roaming pastures somewhere. If I had to choose between trading one or the other, I'd like Brez to deal Duran at what may be peak value to optimize his return. I don't think Masa has reached his ceiling yet as a big league batter, and is worth keeping for now (his contract would also bring back less trade value). As for Refsnyder, he is the perfect bench-warmer and a happy role-player, and no poster should waste any more typing time complaining about that.
  6. Good stuff; I do think Lourdes as more of a righty version of Dugie (who will be traded), than a replacement for Masa (who will DH more no matter what). Then the platoons become Duran/Rafaela in CF, Abreu/Ref in RF. If Duran can repeat '23, or Raf or Abreu break out, that's not a bad outfield.
  7. You provided a single stat to make them look like the same guy... but it doesn't offset the defensive data I posted that clearly separates them as outfielders. Not to mention that LG is a right-handed hitter with pull power that may be a plus in Fenway Park for 81 games a year. There just aren't a lot of ways for Breslow to appreciably improve the defense in one winter... unless you want to overhaul the infield and trade away a cornerstone in a blockbuster. But anything's possible.
  8. But -- the Babe played his last 28 games for Boston... 6 HR, 12 RBI, .181 BA, -0.3 dWAR... but still a positive 0.1 bWAR (1/10th better than a replacement poster?) re. Soto -- who would seem much cheaper to trade for than Tatis -- the Sox will have to decide if it's worth it to pay him for at least a decade... or instead, use the funds to sign a couple top-of-the-rotation starters. Does a pair of aces beat five-of-a-kind (LHHOFers)?
  9. The problem is an entire outfield core of left-handed hitters (unless Rafaela makes it). Gurriel's six-year 162-game averages: 24 HR, 89 RBI, .279 BA, .791 OPS. He's also a good outfielder, unlike Yoshida and Duran... in '23: 5th in Total Zone Total Fielding Runs Above Average, 3rd in Total Zone Outfield Arm Runs Above Average, and only six (three Gold Glovers) had more Defensive Runs Saved Above Average.
  10. Tatis has been mentioned the past week by Boston media as a possible trade target for the Sox. I'd take Betts, but if LA wants us to be stuck with his 12-year contract, they'd have to include a young, controllable pitcher (maybe Graterol). The best I can do for the albatross that is Mookie at this point is Verdugo-Wong.
  11. A power-hitting right-handed bat that doesn't automatically K when it doesn't HR. A guy like that is more likely to be found for a corner outfield position, rather than second base. He'll be costly, and subsequently require a commitment for a minimum-wage CF like Rafalea or Duran (whichever one isn't traded). Once secured, it will be a lot easier to find a good glove man for second base -- until Mayer makes it and Story moves over. A longshot deal for Trout wouldn't change this plan, as he'd probably become a LF at Fenway to maximize his 30s...
  12. I've always liked the idea of striking first this offseason, and swooping right in on targets for next year and beyond. Yes, that will mean overpaying for free agents anticipating bidding wars or trading top prospects for available big leaguers. You get what you pay for -- at least on screen (but not always, as Sox fans have seen, on the mound). A NESN.com article today calls it "talent acquisition" -- which, taken literally, doesn't just mean plug in a body to fill a hole. We've already got plenty of guys who are just ok -- "if everything breaks right", and they can "stay healthy" to maximize their one or two legit skills... Go get somebody good. Sign Montgomery, trade for George Kirby. BTV accepts Mayer and Duran...
  13. Fellas, let's agree about something. What the last place losing record Red Sox really need are better baseball players... ... on the mound, with the gloves and with the bats. We know they're going nowhere without adding some serious arms. But star players can replace the (ahem) incumbents at just about any position except third base -- or wherever Raffy Devers isn't. Boston can plug a few new guys into the rotation, but let's get real about a few dependable starting pitchers pole-vaulting this roster over any AL East opponent. The fans deserve a complete overhaul, and if that includes some prospects assuming fulltime roles, great. Otherwise, let the offseason acquisitions begin!

  15. As a long-time fan of a club noted for star outfielders, I'm not excited by an unproven all-platoon outfield, left to right. There may be little chance to develop All-Stars for '24, but there is certainly room for upgrade by trade. Especially if 3/4ths of the infield returns -- as most assume (Devers-Story-Casas) -- and the catchers are just keeping the position warm for Teel. Don't want to deal a haul for Soto or Trout? Ok, but we can at least part with a few Best Shortstops Available for a solid full-time corner outfielder. Gurriel is a righty with pull power and a good glove... and arb eligible to become a free agent in a year. A new CBO determined to improve his big league roster should be expected to add someone like that.
  16. Man, we need Brez to land a big fish asap. This forum is nowhere without moon optimism.
  17. I think somehow your computer mistakenly reposted a thread from the '22 or '23 winter... or someone hijacked your laptop and is typing a joke for SP4...
  18. While Chaim was sharp, a lot of his answers seemed almost edited by company cliches, with Sam Kennedy bombast lurking between the lines. But the new comedy may be watching Sam try to pretend he actually understands Craig. Listen closely if he stumbles through summaries or better, attempts to amplify; the less Sam gets, the less he'll say -- which will make Red Sox Nation rejoice. If a Breslow comment is followed with a mere, "Absolutely!" -- the new CBO will be a hero.
  19. Wondering if signing both Yamamoto and Imanaga would help their transitions to new country-language-menus-timezones-travel-cities-ballparks-schedules-mounds-baseballs-batters-coaches-teammates... and if Yoshida sharing first-year experiences, plus their familiarity with each other, help all three reach their MLB potential quicker... ... even despite brutal daily posts about them on talksox.com
  20. Thanks for enlightening us on Clay Buchholz... all this time, we only knew him as the millionaire star pitcher who married a Playboy Playmate. Would Buch be more famous today, when starters pitch less innings than ever before? In 2013, 64 pitchers threw at least 180 innings. In 2023, only 25 pitchers had 180 IP -- less than one guy per MLB team.

  22. Barnes -- it's always Barnes -- even if it's not Barnes
  23. Bloom's new awesome advisory job advice: 1. Don't trade prospects! 2. Don't trade veteran players with expiring contracts not named Vazquez at the deadline! 3. Don't sign big money free agents! 4. Don't even offer mid-money free agents one cent over market value (established via organizational analysis by 30 anal-retentives in the Anal-ytics Dept) 5. Don't extend homegrown stars (unless they lead the majors in errors at their position for the last six years).
  24. ... only if Anderson was rehabbing an injury and not expected back until August, when he'd supposedly be better than anyone they could acquire at the trade deadline... in 2025.
  25. Surplus: Mayer. Bloom drafted a pre-Monster Seat Green Monster screen full of BP home run balls also known as the Best Players Available. Is it really a stretch to project a few of those shortstops to actually become future shortstops? From all reports, Teel is an authentic catcher who can hit, and Anthony is a legitimate power threat who can outfield. Neither grow on prospect trees these days. Even if Mayer turns out to be Nomar, it's good to remember the Sox traded their greatest shortstop of all-time (career bWAR in Boston) and then won the World Series. They did not trade either of their second-best left fielders or catchers (Manny, Tek) before those two had two rings each (btw: neither of the best LF and C -- Ted, Pudge -- won any).
