  1. Some of us thought the Sox would've had just as much chance at a wild card if they dealt Paxton at the height of his value at the deadline. But Bloom blew it. Then again, the Mariners traded closers when they were still in it, in two of the last three deadlines. Seattle missed the playoffs both years, but both clubs they gave closers to made the World Series.
  2. Giving up is the epitome of suckitude. It's like admitting you were dumb enough to build a crap roster, or worse, a system without the depth to maintain competitive aspirations... and then attempting to salvage futility by trying to make it look smart -- which make take years to prove, depending on the progress of those top draft picks.
  3. Soto would be a great fit in the short-porch Bronx -- better than with the Sox' lefty-imbalanced line-up in Fenway. He would gave NY a top four that could transform into world beaters: Volpe-Judge-Soto-Stanton... Boston could counter with L-L-L-L-L-L-Story-Wong-Ugh
  4. According to Moon, at least they were honest to their fans (cue Astros jokes) about it. And no one can say Houston, once it was good again, didn't continue to make trades or signings to upgrade holes when free agents left for bigger paydays. Meanwhile, there is another team that tanked and is now loaded with young talent -- the Orioles. However, ownership has still not shown Baltimore fans it is willing to spend big to maximize a new window of winning...
  5. It makes sense, but Breslow may have plans to trade one or two of them, and convert a few more into All-Star starters... (nothing could be better than to improve guys already here, with reasonable salaries).
  6. Even though the bullpen was good, don't be surprised if Breslow adds and subtracts there. The old relievers are the best returning trade chips, and not guaranteed to repeat greatness on the mound nor goodness in health. Supposedly, Breslow favors power arms -- and who wouldn't? Back-end relievers -- hot and cold -- are always the keys to October drama. That Angels strategy of drafting 20 pitchers in a row makes sense if they're the 20 fastest available on radar guns. They all won't make it, but what's better trade capital at the deadline every summer?
  7. Tied up in nots. I like trying not to lose. Breslow may not be able to sign a top free agent pitcher, but he should be determined to make sure a Bearclaw game never happens again in Red Sox history. And no excuses -- injuries, Covid, record (the Dbacks had 61 wins on August 16 when they claimed Ryan Thompson, DFAed by Tampa; Boston had 63 wins)... Stockpile legitimate depth -- and reshape it (already on oft-repeated description of Breslow's pitching instruction). Let's go.
  8. I like giving a bad team with a top pick the option of trading for someone else's big leaguer or pro player. If you want to upgrade your draft position, you have to pay up in actual bodies (not funds). Does that neutralize the risks? Less risk for the bad team, which is assured a guy they're more confident about; more risk for the better team, which can hit the jackpot or lose an asset.
  9. MLB teams should also be allowed to trade pick positions up to draft day, like in other sports. That could generate more excitement (or job openings).
  10. Agreed (unless you're an old guy who needs special protein shakes or blue pills).
  11. Bet they wish they did now, instead of... well --
  12. Sox should still pay Bush to coach an AL East rival against them. Every time he goes to the mound to discuss strategy, the next pitch is a home run!
  13. And I'm gonna eat more carrots this winter so my vision improves.
  14. But were the latter GMs limited by new draft rules on signing $? I remember Speier's book chronicling the Betts signing... Mookie had a number that if he didn't get, he was going to college. Theo caved at the end, and gave the 5th-rounder what he wanted to sign. (don't you wish Theo was Boston CBO in 2020...)
  15. Soto just turned 25. Ohtani is 29... with no guarantee he'll ever be a good pitcher again, or for how long.
  16. Moreno is a stud. Top defender in baseball at age 23, got his bell rung behind the dish a few times this month, and still has 3 HR, 9 RBI, .853 OPS in 12 games (Most Crucial Sample Size of the season). If Kyle Teel can approach that in two years, it will make Bloom look better for the pick (when he somehow fell to 14th), and Breslow look good for developing him.
  17. 20 for 20 worst players available. At least they can all be converted to executives.
  18. He just called the Dodgers to see if they'll take Yoshida, Story and Sale. As part of the negotiations, LA insists the Sox pay the balance on Bauer's ouch-out, and buy a case of Mannywood wigs -- at cost. AC already volunteered to wear one at the Winter Meetings (the culture they are achanging!)...
  19. Thompson, who has pitched more postseason relief innings than any other D-back... was DFAed by Tampa... in mid-August? And signed by Zona -- INSTEAD OF BOSTON -- three days later... THIS is why Bloom was fired!
  20. It's all Dusty's fault for making Framber and Javier throw meatballs the last two games! He shoulda never changed the recipe from last year's World Series, when they were throwing peas!
  21. Wrong! He'd trade for someone already hurt, but due to come off the IL in another month... or year... or never -- but you just wait!
  22. I'm not sure if you've consulted any Blue Jays fans on that. I haven't, but Varsho and Gurriel Jr. are comparable outfielders: both have some pop and were Gold Glove finalists. An even swap could be viewed as an acceptable change-of-scenery deal for both clubs (Lordes made this year's NL All-Star team). But Moreno as a "throw-in"? According to dWAR, he was the best defensive player in baseball in his first full season as a big league catcher. He can also rake, batting third in the order for the NL pennant winners.
  23. A few of the figures are their star players: Corbin Carroll, Gabe Moreno and Ketel Marte. The latter is like their Raffy -- not in sheer power numbers, but their longtime regular with a longterm contract. Marte, the NLCS MVP, had 4.9 WAR this year, second to his career high 6.9 in 2019 (the year Devers had a career-high 5.4 WAR). Carroll, 5.4 WAR and runaway Rookie of the Year, and Moreno, the catcher with the clutch bat and who led MLB with 3.1 dWAR, are better young players than anyone on the Red Sox roster. (still can't believe the Jays traded a catcher who was the #1 prospect in baseball and an All-Star outfielder for an outfielder with a career BA of .229)
  24. Their pitchers did better once they left the hot desert and got to deal in the Philly cold! But now they have to go back to the southwest, and face a pennant winner led by an ex-player GM...
