    No fans in '19 knew the residual damage on Sox pitchers from winning the previous postseason by throwing a month longer in high leverage situations out of regular routines. But it's a good bet the manager, coaches, and players on the field, in the dugout and in the bullpen knew. And it's not like the truth was going to come out then, lest it give opponents an edge (and that includes opposing GMs, looking to exploit a need for trade reinforcements). Nor is it likely for any pitcher to confess now, lest it sound like an excuse. It's no surprise the Sox' best starter in '19 was the one most rested from pitching the least amount in the '18 postseason: ERod.

    Merloni said on EEI today Montgomery absolutely changes everything if signed by Boston. Such a move, he noted -- as many here have -- will let Houck and Whitlock go back to the bullpen. Then again, new pitching management supposedly favors pitchers with velocity... like Fujinaro, who throws 100 mph -- the guy the Mets just signed for $3.5 million. Too bad the Sox couldn't scrape up that much in their offseason budget.

    Unless there's a plague and he feels pressured to sign. Remember, the Dodgers only traded for one year of Mookie -- not 12; that's why Bloom's return was so great for a Hall of Famer about to enter his prime and have multiple MLB-leading WAR years, receive more MVP votes than anyone else, and lead his club to perpetual 100-win seasons. I just proof read what I typed and got see sick.

    Don't forget when Theo joined the Cubs in 2012, he did so with the understanding that the rebuild (tank) would take five years. Chicago actually lost more games his first two years than in the two seasons before Epstein took over. There was no bridge, either. Theo's Cubs won 61, 66, 73 -- then bam, 97, 103 and World Series rings!

    Any Red Sox fans doubting this move, already knows the answer to this question: which owner of the Red Sox has had the most success ruining a baseball team? Now, replace the "i" with another "n" .... which current owner of the Red Sox has had the most success running a baseball team?

    You mean, will anyone be surprised in a year or so when Breslow's title is renamed as General Manager of Systemic Pitching Dynamics... while Theo's advisory role advises who to sign and who to trade? Not for a second. Like Sam just said, "Theo is trusted here." (unlike Green Eggs and Sam-I-Am)

    I just can't see Theo deciding after all these years of success, that he's looking forward to buying into the Red Sox just in time for their tank... (plus, a small cut in the profits on sales of warm beer in plastic cups).

    Like I said, it's not because we'd want him, but if a team is giving up their best player and best pitcher, you can bet they're going to insist we also take their worst contract. If the White Sox make a big move, it'll be to settle all family business.

    The good old Red Sox would be countering the Burnes trade by soon announcing an even bigger blockbuster. BTV accepted: Anthony, Duran, Houck to White Sox... for Cease, Robert, Benintendi and AAA pitcher Nick Nastrini. In the real world, it's doubtful Chicago would do this deal, unless Boston throws in another good arm like Schreiber or Wikelman Gonzalez. Taking back Beni's big contract would make it appealing for the Pale Hose, but if this is truly the real world -- and not the fantasy that BoSox fans lived before the Bloom Era -- we all know the Red Sox aren't taking back any big money obligations... ... or even extending a guy like Cease -- geez, not until they're good enough to pay good enough players to make them good enough to justify good investments.

    It's hard to imagine anyone paying what it will cost to buy the Sox without the intent to actually invest in the product on the field (like the last time new owners took over). Put it this way: there can't be many rich TV moguls who'd rather focus on "the Fenway experience", and instead spend on say, less soggy buns for the franks, or student giveaways like free posters of the team logo.

    The worst thing that can happen for the Red Sox in Baltimore isn't whether the O's spend big on pitching to optimize their window. The worst thing is if the Orioles' new owners swoop in and lock down the likes of Rutschman, Henderson, Rodriguez, Holliday and Cowser longterm.

    According to Tom Werner, the Red Sox lead the division in imaginary wins. One of his front office wizards told him they could've won 10 more games with a normal defense last year. Ten more wins and the Sox are sniffing the postseason... so the plan is finally clear. Why spend big trying to be dominant, when "just normal" can get you a wild card?

    If you were in the Chicago area in 1973, you must have loved Wilbur Wood when he won 24 games! If you were in the Chicago area in 1973, you must have hated Wilbur Wood when he lost 20 games! ... of course, Wood only worked 359.1 innings pitched in '73. The year before, he threw 376.2 -- which is more than the Red Sox' top three starters combined in IP, half a century later.

    The thing is, the Red Sox' starting rotation is so bad, it could really use a few more starters who are just average. Ya know, just to get through another season. According to bb-ref, the AL's average Earned Run Average in 2023 -- per 180 IP was 4.28. Of course, no Sox' pitcher came close to 180 IP, but Giolito did it for three other teams combined. The Red Sox have exactly one starter who was basically average last year: Bello at 4.24. Next is Crawford at 4.51 in 23 starts, followed by Pivetta at 4.66 in 16 starts, then Houck 5.01 in 21 and Whitlock 5.23 in 10. Sale was average at 4.30 in 20 starts. Paxton was 4.50 in 19. But both are gone... ... replaced by Giolito: 4.88 in 33 starts.

    Discussing pitcher W-L records here is like using a blow dryer on the six hairs still growing on each side of my skull above my ears. If you were John Henry's CBO, would you really want to waste millions of dollars on a guy who can give you two dozen starts a year -- which instead, you can cover with a handful of minimum- wage openers picked off the waiver wire?

    Trolls are irritating to some because they were the first to wear pink or purple hair (from what I recall throwing up). My sister had a small collection of them. I had a plastic Ratfink ring. That was a real frantic creature -- his red overalls sported a big gold R.F. to remind him. He may still be banned from all toy forums.

    A lot of posts about paying market value for a starting pitcher to lead the rotation. Some fans may think any debate for this need is sad when it comes to the Boston Red Sox. To that, I just say... ... PGA, baby! (POOR GUY ABSOLVED)
