  1. Their kid's name is Willyou Wallbanger
  2. Pivetta being Pivetta, maybe has a blister from warming up ? Nice to see Trot and Pedey on the field where they won WS's
  3. Alex Speier informs us that the Sox have played 21 games, 7 series, against opponents with records at least 5 games over .500. The record is 5-16 , 0 series. Even at 28-28 the Sox are only 2.5 games out of 3rd WC. Sort of like getting a date with the Homecoming Queens 2nd cousin
  4. I had overlooked Varitek's role. Do we know if the specific calls get transmitted from the bench to the catcher for relay to pitcher , or does the catcher have the game plan in mind, and has the immediate feel for the pitcher's effectiveness ?
  5. Jack Flaherty (RH'er) for the Tigers, vs Nick Pivetta for the defense Flaherty's stats would indicate a potential pitcher for Boston, 1-4 W-L's, but a 3.84 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. More significant when pitching to Red Sox batters at Fenway is 81 K's in 61 innings . Pivetta is Pivetta. Matches the WHIP at 1.07 but can be HR prone . Might throw a gem or might make you throw up. Question of the Day: Who does call the pitches for Boston ? Is it preprogrammed according to analytics, implemented by Wong/McGuire, or is it Bailey ? Is it Breslow himself, sitting above the action watching on GameDay ? The pitch selections to McCann and Gunnar last night in the 2nd were dubious, execution by Crawford was worse. Here is another winnable game against a Tiger's team with a comparable record (27-28) , but remember this is a Boston team that has a losing record at Fenway due to not hitting well in the 1912 Park.
  6. Why should we be surprised that this offense has difficulty with scoring ? Corbin Burnes's talent aside, this team is missing almost 60% of its expected offensive players including O'Neill, Yoshida, Story , Casas and Grissom was expected to hit at least his weight. After a set with the comparable Tigers, the Sox get the mixmaster of Braves, Yankees and Phillies, with a bit of relief from White Sox. Could be a long June
  7. It will be tough to lose this one on a single swing of the bat . But it's the pitching leading up to that swing that created the situation. Both Crawford and Bello have one bad inning where they can't shut it down. Good hitting by the O's or an adverse reaction to pressure ?
  8. Risky to play both in the same game with the injury possibility . I am sure Cora is trying to put the better hitters at the plate when the team is scuffling for runs. McGuire , however, is no Sandy Leon at the plate and can carry his own weight. He should be the # 1 PH'er vs Rh'ers.
  9. I am sure the sabremetricians have reams of data to show that trading one of their 27 outs against an attempt to move a runner up 90' is a losing tactic. But , that does not mean it isn't a skill to be learned and worked on so when the right situation does develop, it is one of the tools available.
  10. Predictable, and it was up above
  11. When Crawford's shorts get a little tight he does tend to blow up , can't stop the opponents momentum.
  12. When you see Cedanne's ability to get to the ball on a long running catches, saving extra base hits, I would want to keep him in CF also. It may only be one or two plays a game where Rafaela's speed can be applied, but they almost always will be run savers. At SS, he could make a difference but his hands are not as steady in the glove-throwing hand transfer. I also agree with Max, that the OF with Duran and Abreu is certainly solid enough in the field, at Bat and on bases to compete at the MLB level. It is most likely that O'Neill turns into a one year rental ( or maybe to the trade deadline). Don't think he is the future here with Yoshida's contract clogging the arteries in the OF /DH for a few years
  13. O'Neill back in Boston to get the knee checked. Cora says "We feel like he should be fine, just want to be sure...The medical staff ( known for exceptional diagnoses) feels like he should be ok" O'Neill says it doesn't feel so good, not improving. Who are you going to believe...Red Sox medical staff or the guy who specializes in injuries ? I doubt Cora was trying to rip Tyler but AC's statements show a smidge of doubt. Would not be a shocker if this doesn't become a 10 day rest and rehab deal.
  14. Bello goes to 6-2 , probably gets an invite to the A-S game. W-L records lose all credibility . The kid has 9 starts with 47.1 innings pitched, just over 5 per game. That's why I call him a Bullpen Burner
  15. Yes, Ref is a pro. Not great or the core of a team but if you had 8 of his type plus that bum Devers, you could show up 162 times. Fielding/arm, meh.
  16. Duran with a good bunt to advance the runners and Romy does what he should with a sac fly. But then Refsnyder hits one out and seals the deal. Big 9th inning.
  17. I think on e of our roster experts mentioned that Brennan had options and the inimitable Joely Rodriguez did not.
  18. Wong can be amazing at times , probably well worth trading Betts for him. Picked up Raffy very nicely after looking bad on a couple pitches.
  19. After the initial walk , that was 6 outs of brilliant pitching by Bernie.
  20. Brayan Bello, Bullpen Burner ; Brennan Bernandino, Battling Baller
  21. Bottom 6, Bello leaves 2 on, no outs in a one run game. About typical Bello game, some run support, 5 innings pitched , mixed results. Flashes of very good pitching sandwiched between a poor first inning, and an indeterminate 6th. Bernandino better be good here
  22. With the actual players and farm system of the Dodgers available, Chaim turned , maybe under ownership duress, Mookie Betts into Conor Wong. His successor turned Sale into Grissom. Harry Frazee turned Babe Ruth into No, No Nanette . A storied history
  23. Bello suddenly gets hot and becomes unhittable. A reminder of prior seasons where Sox pitchers got tagged in the first, then woke up. The question was whther their pregame work and warmup was sufficient . Whatever, this game remains winnable but a thicker cushion would not hurt.
  24. Smith and Grissom, like Dalbec before them might prosper by simply not swinging at any pitch that is not middle/middle. All 3 literally strike themselves out often, on pitches not even close.
  25. Bello did handle the second inning well although his second guess of the HP ump on a pitch that was definitely a ball was not wise.
