  1. Yankees drop struggling Giancarlo Stanton to 4th in lineup Talk about an absurd ESPN headline--and a huge one too.
  2. We don't know about Cora yet, nor do we know about Hanley or any other surprising hot starter. But if Cora has an edge over recent managers, my guess is that it's because he has the trust of the players (esp the Latino ones) and has an old-fashioned hands-on, direct way of managing. He's got energy and so do his players, because his independent spirit is given to them too. guessing of course
  3. But Moreland has begun to hit after a slow start, so I can see him back in the lineup soon, maybe tonight. I love his bat when he's on.
  4. This is no big problem I'm sure, and nobody said it was. But the same Sale no-run pattern was around last year at least during certain stretches. I find it's an interesting observation, one that doesn't pretend to be, or have to be, all that important. PS yup was around for some of the "clutch debate" and I do believe in clutch more than some here, but I get both sides.
  5. Besides his mound opponents, it could be that our offense doesn't feel the urgency to produce. Unlike our other starters, Sale doesn't seem to get behind, so hitters don't screw up their high caliber performance. (We're all like this, but many of us don't admit to it: when we gotta come through, we're somehow stronger)
  6. I think that if anything we may have an excess of good players, maybe a few more than what constitutes normal depth. This will soon be true in the relief staff, and is already true with players like Swihart and perhaps Lin. Swihart should definitely be seeing more action (somewhere else if not here) and Lin looks like he at least belongs on the team. And, or course, Pedey's return will accentuate this. I would say it's more a problem for a few players than it is a team problem.
  7. That numbness is quite different with each person, and usually occurs quicker with age. Price is 32 and probably more cold weather sensitive than most on top of a few years older. As I said earlier, he could also have a neurological problem which has not yet manifested. Some people's feet freeze up real quickly and with others it's their hands. The finger problem is very common, which is why all kinds of hand warmers have been "invented" to deal with this. I can recall the same assaults on Lebron James when he was pulled out of two different playoff games because of muscle cramps in his legs. Everyone was ripping him, no doubt mostly people are not that affected or even tortured by them. This can be an excruciating pain when it occurs in the thighs--and when you can't walk it off or massage it out.
  8. Try going out to work on your car in sub 32 weather and see what happens to the tips of your fingers, and notice the clumsy way you handle tools. And you ain't no elite pitcher who is totally dependent on his right hand and the feel of the ball, but only some guy working on a car and feeling frustrated as hell.
  9. Terrific performance by Porcello tonite. Could he have pitched any better esp. under nasty circumstances. Praise be. we're on our way!
  10. Numb fingers is a real problem for a pitcher. If it sticks for quite a long time, it can indicate a neurological problem or an injury. Otherwise, the cold alone can do it. And does all the time to all of us who live in the northeast. I can get it at 36 degrees on some mornings. I feel otherwise warm enough, but my damn fingertips are frozen up and have no feeling (this after being out for 20 minutes). The idea of gripping a ball and putting stuff on it is out of the question. I say this because even using tools can be impossible. Next time he pitches in cold weather, they should gear him up with a hand warmer or deep wooly pockets on his uniform.
  11. That's a riot. I like that.
  12. Stanton and Sanchez both busted out last night--and Yanks were able to rest their best relievers. What bothers me about tonight is that Benintendi is being benched against Tanaka.... based on history (with no reference that he's riding high right now I suppose) So no Bogaerts and no Beni... this leaves a thin lineup This game will be a test for the new David Price. May he shut them down for 7-8 innings.
  13. Lucky to get one lousy run after all that work of loading the bases with one out and 2-3-4 coming up. Not impressive.
  14. I'd be shocked in TB loses under 100 games... we're helping them out today.
  15. I wanted him out after 3 innings and 73 pitches or at least after first base-runner in 4th. TB is using relievers let's match em
  16. Way too many pitches for his first outing... don't get it ... way up in the 80s
  17. I think there are a lot of factors that weigh into whether a player is covering up or is honestly surprised at test results. I have little faith in the accuracy and broad sweep of these drug tests, and assume that 25% are false. There is close to a 10-20% inaccuracy with almost all medical tests, esp. of this nature. Add in the countless legal supplements aimed at all athletes which have untested substances and thus have a good chance of setting off a positive result. (and yes, even meat loaded with growth hormones) So how do we know. There are physical signs, performance signs, player history... etc, with steroids, the facial changes are key. But this approach is hardly foolproof. In any case, I hope Michael C can continue to get in a lot of work on the side, whatever that is, because the penalty is extreme for a first time offender. It sounds like something that murderous Philippines president would deal out.
  18. Interesting. thanks. Now, I'll feel less empty tomorrow.
  19. No game on Friday. How did that happen? Is this a first? I tried to google the reason, but no dice.
  20. I get it, but a five day rest here and there should suffice. This is a full seven day rest between starts. I wouldn't even do that in August or Sept. And all past Red Sox managers have skipped backup starters (sometimes 2 of them) in the early season esp., given the days off and rain outs.
  21. Speaking of resting starters early in the season, I can't believe that Johnson is scheduled to open up the Yankee series. Sale pitches this Tuesday, but will have to wait till next Wed. to pitch again in game 2 of that series. At least this is the official projection on the various network team schedules. Are we out to win games or are we still in the exhibition mode?
  22. Love it that Bogaerts and Price sure seem for real this year. And that we're tied with the Yanks at 2-1 (hey, who to hell are all those guys in the Yankee lineup...check it out) And that Craig Kimbrel is off to a great start. I would immediately put Bogaerts in the 3 hole, the perfect 3 for me. None of this messing around with Ramirez.
  23. Price very efficient: 46 pitches through 4. Who gets to relieve him??
  24. This game a continuation of last year: Nunez hits and nobody else does (except for Bogarts). Nunez literally carried this team through much of the last part of the season. And another lost great performance for Sale... also as in several games last year. boo boo
