  1. Ha. Leon is the most alpha of our catchers..He outweighs Swihart by 50 pounds, and is one inch shorter. Have a drink on me.
  2. Strange, I was quoting your one line and all of the above appeared. Anyway, I guess our starting--and relief, pitchers should maybe have the last word as to whom they'd rather pitch to. Can we poll each one of them?? Secret ballot. The results might be interesting, and I AS MANAGER would abide by the vote.
  3. At this moment is Vasquez or Leon the better defensively. I know that V lost some arm strength post-surgery, and that both catchers are better than average defensively. Gotta think one or the other will raise his averages above .210 at some point. And Pedroia will soon offer more offense at second base to make up for poor catcher hitting. I wonder if the Mets (excess good pitching) is not a good fit for Swihart. They did have two injured catchers earlier... not sure they're back yet, tho.
  4. So far, this is one of the best Sox starter performances this year-- 62 pitches in 6 innings. Quite a contrast from like the last 15 games or more. And Price can do a Verlander just when we need it.
  5. Yeah, amazing about Yanks ... no official game this week until tomorrow night. Surprised to see that JD leads the team with most hits... several more than Betts (who walks more). Right about now I want a Verlander type pitcher on this team... am tired of these 5-6 inning starters.
  6. I agree. In interviews, he seems plenty intelligent and interesting... get the sense that he plays other sports and has other interests outside baseball. Likeable and kind of cool. And about Betts' size which makes his power impressive. May he keep hitting and hold onto that 2 hole which, I think, fits him.
  7. I didn't realize that Smith had such a great contract. Thornberg has a couple more years too but for over double the cost. Both are being paid much less than I thought. (so I guess the injuries don't faze me as much now)
  8. The returns on the Smith and Thornberg trades are next to ziltch. It's going to be hard now to give away much for another top receiver... get burned again. We might as well bury the promises that these two held for us--both supposed stopper quality.
  9. True, but I've always thought of him as the type of player who when given a half a chance, would show his worth. He's done it in the past a few times.
  10. Rick's ERA has jumped from 2.68 to 3.38 in just a few innings.
  11. The Mendoza line (c. .215) was supposed to apply to ALL major league pos. players. But, of course, the figure is based on a full season. Right now there are a number of decent players around the league hitting below it. If Bradley is hitting below .200 at the All Star Break, it is likely he will end up below Mendoza at the season's end. Which wd of course cause a lot more buzz than what's happening right now. It's too bad that he's had several little corrections that have helped (fanfare in press) but has always retreated to his former self.
  12. I didn't say I had a problem with it... I'm merely pointing out that he's not the classic lead-off hitter because he's too good. Since neither we nor Houston have a natural PEST, each makes the best of the situation handed to them.. Also, the classic no. one hitter may be vanishing from the MLB... Gardner on the Yanks is this type but his average has been down the past two years (his OBP is still very high tho) Everyone today wants to be a HITTER, not a set-up man. Shortening up on the bat is all but passe, methinks.
  13. Our line-up is always going to be problematic because we don't really have the perfect lead off hitter to set up the 2 hitter who could be Bogey or Nunez or Benitendi when these latter two are back in hitting form, but I think Betts is best at 3 (how else will he have a shot at the triple-crown) and Martinez at 4. What we need at leadoff is Betts without the power, or Betts with a whole lot of power coming up after him. Or a true lead off hitter... the guy who chokes up on the bat, pokes hits over the infield, walks 100 times, beats out infield singles, steals 40-50 bases and has an OBP of at least .375. In other words, A PEST. We need a PEST... normally such guys are second basemen.
  14. Light Rain at 10:00 after a "heavy thunderstorm" Maybe we get back into it at 10 if the field's still there.
  15. The Oakland pitcher who no-hit us was incredibly quick to the plate... I was counting... sometimes 12 seconds between pitches.
  16. The Yanks are excellent at making pitchers throw strikes, so E-Rod might as well forget the finesses stuff tonight or he'll be through in the 5th... and you know what that means... 4 more innings of our suddenly ineffective relief staff. (right now Yanks big reliever advantage) Shouldn't Wright have gotten back by now? And how long to we have to wait for Thornburg to see action??
  17. Walker's cheap late swing two-strike double with Devers way off the line.... the turning point in this one.
  18. All fastballs. Sit back and take your choice.
  19. Someone earlier said that surgery for CTS is no big deal. Maybe not, but the recovery time, esp for major league pitcher, could be months long. Maybe he should have played these video games with his right hand.
  20. By "exposed" I meant that he will be getting more at bats each game in the 2-3 holes, and this could lower his average, if not his power output.
  21. Yes, Cora likes Hanley... no doubt about it. But I think his batting order position (2 or 3) may, ironically, expose Hanley, more than help him. I'm hoping Cora's trust works out and Hanley hits .295 with over 25 homers/90 RBI but that would surprise me a little. To me, Hanley is a 6-7 hitter who should maybe be on his way out at season's end. We shall see.
  22. Whatever happened to our two Stud relievers...Carson and Thornberg??
  23. That double-play messes up the 9th for us... Need to get 2 on in the 9th to get to Betts. Sucks.
  24. The only way we win tonight is if Pom is fully back in form and Severino has at least a bit of a relapse from what he's typically shown in almost all his outings this season. I like Pom better vs the earlier Yanks when they were a left-side dominated team... now the power is on the right-side... not fun at all for all of our lefty starters. No doubt this was part of the motivation to go after Stanton.
  25. Price should have a conversation with the guy the Sox face tonight--Bartolo Colon. And then when we pull into NYC, he should speak with CC Sabathia. Price is a brainy guy, so he should be able to better than match these two. He's younger, much more athletic, and more imposing. So, why not outmatch them in the coming years.
