  1. AZ taking advantage of the one batter rule while it lasts
  2. Price may give us 7 innings. One positive note. But it must be said, playing by NL rules, is a big advantage to pitchers.
  3. In terms of NE weather over the last 9 days, the Sox are better off on the road, win or lose. It's been much colder than the stated temps on account of the ceaseless high wind conditions--way too bitter for baseball. We even got 2" of snow last night. There's only a single gripe about the schedule and that is that we should have had a rest day, something that even the weather out west has kept from us.
  4. In any case, all three of our catchers are better defensively than Sanchez. If the defense starts with the catcher, than we have the best in the business (now in Pawtucket) and the Yanks must have one of the worst. Advantage Sox. As to our relief pitchers at least coming through, well last evening they did not--or he, Brian Johnson, did not.
  5. That's exactly what this feels like... a hangover. PS Nunez has a lower ERA than Porcello.
  6. I thought a step or two toward the Eastern Time Zone and a weaker opponent would help a lot, but not such luck. Maybe tomorrow.
  7. I was replying in a humorous way to a funny comment, but to me it's not so much NFL player contracts that make BB move great players he wants out, but BB himself. He seems to know just when these players need to go no matter how high he drafted them or at what level they're performing. This is esp true with some of his star defensive players who he has unloaded at the peak of their careers, or when they were the best linebacker or d-lineman on the team. He leaves a lot of experts scratching their head, but in the end, he is often proven right.
  8. Belichick would trade him tomorrow--for a third round pick. Focus, focus is the Patriot mantra.
  9. Competition for Betts in free agency, would depend a great deal on the timing. What big market teams will need him in a couple years? And which will have "cap room" for him? These past two years have been, on average, bad for free agents. So Betts, if he wants the top dollar money, better figure out just how the wind is blowing before he rejects any unsatisfactory Boston offer.
  10. Well, your 5-6 prediction for the first 11 games may prove to have been more optimistic rather than pessimistic (as you were charged). I hope upon return home, the weather will be warm enough to ignite a little winning streak. And meanwhile, AZ is, at least, less of a challenge, so your forecast may end up right on the money.
  11. I would prefer to guess the number of wins, because it's hard to say what the rest of the AL will do... already the Yanks have a slew of key injuries, for example. I say the Sox win 92 games. Where that will put them, I have no idea.
  12. Oakland is probably not the best team to assess Sale's prowess. I'm quite certain they led the league in strikeouts last year and besides have several youthful hitters. And it's early in the season for the offense too.
  13. I agree about JDM. He's in the line of Ted Williams and David Ortiz. And should it come to having to trade Mookie, I do agree that the age and prowess of the returning players are critical to making the trade work. I do think Mookie's defense would be the bigger thing lost.
  14. These opening games are the rotation's spring training. I don't know why they were held to so few innings during the spring...maybe nagging injuries, but I sure did question it when I read the box scores. Add these opening losses to the losses that will come when a couple of these starters go down for a stretch, and we might drop from 107 wins to 91. I just don't trust this group of arms for a full season. Porcello is the proven dependable, and he is about due for an injury or an arm condition.
  15. The bottom line is this: What's he asking for? And what will his on the field numbers be when indeed he does ask. And will those numbers rise or fall in the years of the contract? Once we know the first two, and can guess at the third question, then we can each state our personal opinion. I almost think I would hate to give up his defense more than I would his offense.
  16. Pedroia's contract offered a yearly savings for sure, but it was LONG... till 37 years old. So 14m a year was more like 18m a year, and may turn out to be more like 22m per year in actual value to the Sox.. unless Pedroia can make a big comeback and play 2 more solid years out of the 3 remaining.
  17. It's hard to imagine Eovaldi not coming through, given all his Sox success, so this game may well be a test for the BP. Or maybe our bats will rock and make that a moot point.
  18. On the plus side, in terms of our bull pen, they will be spared in the 9th inning. Save the closer for the next game.
  19. At least the league is not including the Dodgers (makes sense that they would) on this western swing, because I think they hit like 8 homers in their opener earlier today.
  20. Except, these three teams are not exactly winning teams. In fact, Arizona is outright losing team. But it's hard to start off with a western swing--I think that's a bit of a punishment.
  21. I don't think I quite understand how we did so well last year. Therefore, I am not all puffed up with confidence about this season. And this revolves around the lack of pitching depth. The Yanks have the same problem--but only with starters, and this could give them an advantage if we have one or two starters out with consequential injuries. As to the start of the season... if you don't care about one game or one patch of games, then the wins mean little too. But do you think silence would accompany a 9-2 start. Ha ha. No way. And if we go 5-6 there will be no silence FROM ANYONE either, because each game does count which is why we have game threads and post game comments etc.
  22. I can't believe this start to the season: 11 straight road games way out west in 11 days. Not a single day off. Rare in many ways. Sale's performance today encouraging... he faces the real thing against a 2-0 team on Thurs. Hope he's up to this and two more road starts. Daunting stuff.
  23. Nope. I don't mean that. I mean: why can't the MLB be more like the NFL? How can you give 12 year contracts, and tie up 20% of your payroll to players who are easily subject to injuries, and often the kind of injuries that make a super player into a merely good player. And if the tenured player isn't exactly continually motivated, what makes him want to excel when there's no more carrot or stick. I love unions, but the kind I respect most, do not represent multi-millionaires. But, I know, this is big business and the players are entertainers more than athletes. But I personally know two ex-Olympian silver medal winners, and both now in their 50s, are working for under 30k per year. Yes, it's good to know that great athleticism and MONEY do not always have to go together. Sports, even at the top level, can still just be sports.
  24. What a catch-22. The better the players on a team, the more impossible to sign them. The more success a team has the more expensive the players. I say let's have a hard cap, and have all contracts re-negotiated every three years max. This tenure stuff has got to go. That's for stuffy professors, not for young athletes. And it's creating a huge gap between the rich and "poor" players. (a far cry from the days when the Brooklyn Dodger players used to play pick-up games with the fans outside the stadium before the game)
  25. I voted "by committee" because I don't think Barnes will work out in the long run, and possibly not in short run either. So, someone will replace him, and then someone may well replace the replacement. And so it goes until, in the end, it will be BP "by committee." I don't see Mejia is this role because I think he will have to take some considerable time proving himself in lesser relief roles.
