Or Kike is your CF/RF with JBJ in CF/RF and Verdugo moves over to left. Better defensive alignment, larger hole in your lineup, probably not worth it.....makes more sense if the Sox go out and sign someone to start in the outfield. Maybe this means they're going to make a serious run at Suziki? or perhaps Brant to play LF? The deal makes more sense if the Sox sign another bat to start in the outfield. Which......could be a while now. -

They likely sold high on Renfroe, maybe they're thinking JBJ can bounce back in that 2021 was an albatross. Remmeber, JBJ is just under contract for one more year, so again, they're throwing around money for one year so they're obviously content with going over the luxury tax limit. JBJ for Renfroe straight up seems like a bit of a head-scratcher, but they did get two prospects in return, they effectively took on a bad contract for one year for prospects. But I don't think we evaluate this as Renfroe vs. JBJ because Renfroe started for us and I think JBJ is going to come back as a 4th outfielder or a platoon guy. Now this is just speculation, but if they go out and sign a guy like Suzuki and resign Schwarber this deal makes a whole lot more sense and I like it but on the surface, it appears to be a bit of a head-scratcher. The two prospects in return were ranked 16th and 17th in Milwaukee's system. I'll reserve final judgment until I see the finished product for the 2022 season. -
Perfect low-risk high-reward move. Guy could be a huge asset towards the end of 2022, and if he returns to form they could have a really pitcher for two years on the cheap.

This is why I think we're going to add salary somewhere this winter. The Sox over the long term have shown time and time again they're completely comfortable with having one of baseball's highest payroll and going over the luxury tax limit. What they do NOT do, is live over it like LA has. They reset last year, and with more money coming off the books over the next few years they have the ability to go over by a decent amount this year and still have the capacity to get back under if they needed to or wanted to.

Blooms entire tenure in Boston to date (which has been short) has been while this team has been in transition and with the mandate to get under the tax limit to reset. He did that while putting together an ALCS contender. I don't think anyone here can rightfully say they know how Bloom is going to operate the next few years with ownership presumably willing to go over the luxury tax limit.

Oh it was a great contract, at least on the surface. In a year from now it could be a horrible contract.

You better believe, Bogaerts, Devers and their agents are paying attention to what all these infielders are getting this year. Bogaerts will around 300 million.

Correa I can get on board with, but Freeman, I think Dalbec looks good enough to wait for Casas mid 2022. You spend money on both Freeman and Correa then theres a good chance you lose both Devers/Bogaerts over the next year.

Still have Correa, Story and Siemon out there for up the middle, Freeman if you want a 1B. Schwarber is still a FA, Stroman, Bryant, Taylor, Marte, Rodon, Gray, and others. Just because Bloom isn't striking first, doesn't mean he's losing the offseason.

No you're not, but I'm not surprised. Every time I see FA predictions my natural inclination is to assume it's too little because players almost always get paid more than us fans think they will. It's what I love about the banter in here. If Seager came up through the Sox system people would be starting threads about the Sox signing him for 200/10 thinking that will do it. It's interesting to see these deals before the CBA, my guess is whatever is not in agreement whatever it may be that both sides suspect player salary inflation is not going to come down.

Do you have a source that the Sox were waiting for 2023 to "make a splash"? They reset last year and with a much stronger FA class this year one would assume they plan on making a splash this year. The majority of high end talent is still out there. It's still November.

That's a massively inappropriate comparison. Sale is your #1 starting pitcher, Wacha is presumably #5 or possibly the swingman. You also gave up multiple top prospects for 1 year of control in him, one of which being the #1 prospect in all of baseball. Wacha......get 7 million dollars for one year. You're not signing him to be a front end starter. Investing hundreds of millions and top prospects demands a track record while taking a chance on a guy who your scouts think can turn it around for ONE year is apples and oranges. Hell, one isn't even a fruit, or food, it's like apples and rocks.

Wacha led MLB last year with starts in which he went 5+ innings with 0 runs and 1 or 0 hits. When he’s on he’s on. This is why Bloom is better than us and why he makes championship teams with low payrolls. They could very well see something in him they believe they can fix and make him more consistent. They’re not reading the backs of baseball cards wanting to pay guys for the past like baseball fans. It’s 1 year, and they’re paying a 1 war pitcher about what 1 war is worth. Relax, let’s see how he does. If your cup is half empty go top yourself off and quite down; class is in session.

I think you have it reversed. The fact that Bloom can spend $7 million on 5th/6th/swing type pitcher alludes to the Sox not being afraid to go over the luxury tax in 2022, which has been reported before. Expect more moves.

Actually, the Sox reluctance to protect a full 40 men from the rule 5 is direct evidence that they plan on adding more free agents.

I must say, when I heard the news of this signing I thought I just had to head over to the talksox forum to read all the negative nancies. Ya’ll deliver….without failure. I’ll admit this isn’t the sexiest move, but I trust Bloom knows more than we do. Wacha had a strong finish to a bad year, perhaps bloom sees something fixable. Regardless, this is a great depth move. Bloom took this team from awful to Championship contenders because he understands how good the 26th man on your roster is is very important. As fans, we obsess over the top of a roster but guys who know what they’re doing like bloom are thinking about all 40 men. Also, let’s remember that the Sox are not done, I suspect they’ll pick up another starter and a few relievers too.

I actually really liked the ideal of signing Matz if it was coupled with signing a good #2 guy as well. We will see what Bloom will do, he casts a wide net but this CBA situation could cause us to wait a while.
