  1. This is not a new move, 20 years ago these were the types of moves made all the time but no one ever talked about them or cared. No, it's annoying to hear about because every small transaction gets weighed against the big moves they did or did not do as if this stops them from making more high-end moves. It doesn't, they just suck at signing good free agents top dollar.
  2. I'm not sure how much of a catcher Ronaldo Hernandez is anymore, and Caleb Hamilton isn't anything too exciting either. If they think they have a better upgrade for a depth option and they don't have to really pay him anything, that's fine. Like I said, the Milb teams need to be field too.
  3. They needed a catcher in AAA, they still have to field the Minor league teams.
  4. I heard that, I wonder if we will ever find out.
  5. A lot of these kids agree to terms with teams when they're 13-14 before they officially sign and are taking off of showcases. The scouting is messy, it's not the like the MLB draft. The fluidity between the #1 ranked guy and the #30th ranked guy in the IFA class is ten times messier than in the mlb player draft.
  6. I feel the further away a prospect is the wider range of possible outcomes. You will the guy who signed for 7K become a star and the 1.5 million dollar bonus baby never play in the majors. But some figures worth noting. Bogaerts 410K (we gave Jose Vinicio $1.95 million that year) Devers $1.5 million Miguel Bleis $1.5 Million (soxprospects #3) Luis Perales $7.5K (sox prospects #10) Bryan Bello $28K (ranked as high as #24 on BAs top 100 mid 2022 before graduating) Caddanee Rafaella $10K There's been some duds, and then of couse the sad story of Daniel Flores who got $3.1 million in 2018 and was considered one of the best all around talent that year. Kid got cancer and passed away. Then there's prospects like Christopher Acosta who got $1.5 million from the Sox until he was suspended by the team and never played again for 4 years. The details have never been known, and it's a big mystery. But it most of been something really bad for the team to place a guy on their suspended list 4 straight seasons.
  7. Story is going to have to perform at the back end of his contract now do be worth the money, because he aint' opting out. The good news is, a healthy Story is a really good ball player. The bad news is, what if he can never get back to that level of play? He is only going to be in his age-30 seasons so there's a decent chance he still comes back strong. Lets just hope this is one of those situations where it's not a snowball effect of injury after injury. A lot of guys get injured and have a lost year or two and then come back fine, while others are seemingly never the same or struggle longer. I don't know if I'd want to bet on him, but seeing how we are stuck with his contract I'm certainly rooting for him. I feel a heck of a lot better if he has a productive 2nd half to 2023.
  8. If he was healthy in todays market he'd get a lot more than that. Todays Story in Todays market would not get very much at all. He might get a high AAV with way less years and an opt out. Or just short term deal. Well actually, he wouldn't even get any of that because he can't play for at least 1/2 the season. He might get a contract structured like Paxton but with a lot more money potentially.
  9. At the time of the signing Story actually had an OPS .002 higher than Bogey AWAY from Coors, or maybe it was .002 lower but I think it was higher. Point is, effectively the same.
  10. You got to love the off-season threads that just turn into a carrousel of repeating arguments. There are no winners, only daily, come back tomorrow and play again. Maybe we just need pitchers and catchers to report so we can talk about something else. But this story situation is just stupid stupid stupid.
  11. Over Over Under Over Under Over
  12. Soxprospects identified him as a guy who could be DFA'd next. who knows, maybe he clears.
  13. If Andrus is holding out for three years he could be getting two year deals with slightly higher AAV but not enough to entice him to a 2 year deal. Maybe we can sign him to a 2 year deal with a team option third year, but put a $6 million buyout in it. That way we can pay him a little bit more money for effectively two years but keep the AAV down a bit.
  14. Bloom wouldn't know what to do with a medical any more than me or you would, he's reading or listening to a doctors interpretation and recommendations of such report. Of all the reasons to hate Bloom, the only way this would ever make sense is if it came to light that Bloom forced or coerced Story to make a medical decision AGAINST the advice of a medical professional here. This does not appear to be the case by any means.
  15. Fine, that's fair, I have no quarrels with that stance and agree. My issue is with the stupid ideal that if he had surgery now, he should have had surgery back in October.
  16. This team could win anywhere between 0-162 games next year.
  17. I'm going to say it again I don't care how annoying it's but anyone who feels a person should have been pressured into getting surgery when they may not have needed surgery just lacks all empathy for their fellow man. And after what happened in Buffalo a week ago you'd think people would use their brains before regurgitating such garbage.
  18. That's exactly it. This can still be a bad signing, Bloom can still be bad at his job, AND people can back off of the "they should have made him get the surgery sooner" argument which is just unethical, lacking knowledge of common medicine, and wrong on so many levels. Let's also factor in Kike tweeting today calling some of the reports about his earlier knowledge complete ********. He literally tweeted and used the word ******** there too I believe. I will never understand why people make the arguments they do. This is NOT an attempt to defend Bloom, the wolves can have him IDK. I have no idea where people got that nonsense from other than......fan frustration. Emotions play a large role in the decisions we make, it's evolutionary, and here we see some people who clearly get emotional and can not think rationally when they get upset.
  19. Or about an Elvis Andrus, which we need right now
  20. Makes perfect sense, Sox still need maybe two infielders now, or maybe one and a CFer. Also, you need space to bring guys up and there’s always the trade deadline Also, at this point, it makes 100% sense to reset this season. It might have been harder to fill those holes if we added AAV this year.
  21. Obviously there’s many other risks than death, and those being more likely too. Surgery is never a guarantee, ever. It’s always recommended that it be avoided. You’d think after the Bills game that more sports fans would have compassion for athletes. This is just entertainment for us but to them this is their life. To get mad at them because they tried to avoid surgery at this point in time in our country is just lack of empathy and lack of understanding of modern medicine.
  22. On average a person dies everyday from just basic procedures. Surgery is NEVER a guarantee and always a last resort. The debate should really just end right there.
  23. I’ve herniated a disc, torn ligements and tendons (partially) and fully rehabilitated myself without surgery. Actually last year around this time I was laying in my back in my office unable to move. I could of had surgery but my doctor told me it could be avoided. I did everything right, completely revolutionized how I exercised my core and made core strength a fundamental part of my routine. Just 3 weeks ago I entered the 1,0000 lb club, a feat well known in the bodybuilding community. I am happy and greatful to have avoided surgery as any person should be, but it is their personal choice. To suggest that an injury which extent is unknown to us, without any medical knowledge or actual access to his records no one can definitively say that surgery should have been recommended at an earlier time. No one, this argument should really just die right now. Plenty of legit, and real reasons to be upset with this FO. Just stop people.
  24. This is just wrong, and pure conjecture at best. I take it you have very little exposure or experience with modern medicine. A competent medical staff is going to avoid surgery with a patient. That’s just how things work, it would be on Story to push for a surgery otherwise it would be an ethics voilation to push surgery when not needed as a first line of treatment. Unless you are medical doctor who has access to Story’s medical (which unless you were his doctor would be a massive HIPPA violation) stating that surgery was optimal months ago and should have been suggested then is pure 100% conjecture in your part.
  25. And I would admit this is one of those instances where all opinions matter. I was admittedly on the fence, I didn’t have much faith and would have been ok going for it but was leaning towards resetting.
