Having Joely in here makes me nervous.

By that unit of measure, who doesn’t have some kind of red flag? They say that it’s expected that every pitcher is going to have TJS at some point the way guys pitch. Some get hurt, recover and don’t skip a beat, others turn into an injury machine and suffer set back after set back after set back (Sale Story are good examples). Did Albert Pujols have Red flags? He never lived up to his contract and effectively went from a perennial 1.000 ops guy to a .750 ops guy. I think the Sox decision making is easily worthy of criticism, but you can’t predict many or not most injuries. Guys get hurt, and the older they are, the more likely they’re to get hurt or see a decline of production. This is why most free agents never live up to the height. This is why I think it’s more fruitful to criticize the Sox inability to develop and lock up young talent rather than criticize free agent signings. They’ve had plenty of guys live up to the money too

Wait, I think I see the point of some people now. When the Sox are negotiating with free agents they should start asking them the question “Hey, are you going to get hurt?” “How many injuries and years do you plan on missing over the next 7 years”? The fact that they don’t ask this is mind boggling. As a matter a of fact, they really need to start asking guys how many RBIs they plan on having, and how many runs they plan on giving up. I can’t believe they don’t do this now.

Should we just start the realistic 2025 thread now? O'Neil Giolito Pivetta Cambell Story Grissom Refsnyder Gonzalez And now possibly Whitlock/Devers. I know with pitching injuries are up across the game, but it seems like the Sox have an allergy to staying healthy.

A better bullpen would have equated this game to a nice comeback victory (minus the injuries) wait, the potential of injury to Whitlock/Devers just sucks. Regardless I think Joely is wasted space on this roser, him along with Dalbec. I think Winc would be better with more depth in the pen and not being needed to go multiple innings evertime out. -
Roman Anthony - Defense: Red Sox believe he can stick in center field long-term, but others believe he ends up in a corner. Strong defensive instincts. Has played a strong center field so far, showing good reads off the bat and nice paths to the ball. Makes plays that a lot of center fielders cannot make. Ability to stay in center will depend on whether he can retain his athleticism as he matures. Potential above-average defensive profile. Arm: Above-average arm strength. Summation: Potential above-average regular. Ceiling of a regular all-star. Key to reaching his potential will be showing he can consistently make contact against advanced pitching, especially left-handers, and continuing to show he can stick in center field. How his hit tool develops will determine how much of his power potential actualizes. His power is a carrying tool and is very impressive for his age. Showed he was much more advanced at the plate than anticipated in 2023. Exciting prospect with one of the highest ceilings in the system.

Partial scouting reports: Marcelo Mayer - Field: Instinctual defender with very fluid actions. Looks like he is gliding on the field. Soft hands and solid footwork. Moves well and has plenty of range for shortstop. Confident defender; will take a flashy infield. Potential plus defender at short. Arm: Plus arm, plenty for shortstop. Able to make all the throws with plenty of zip. Summation: Potential above-average regular. Ceiling of a regular all-star. Has all the tools you look for in a future everyday shortstop and the offensive upside to hit at the top of a contending team's lineup. Game comes easy to him. Potential for four above-average-or-better tools. Should be able to stick at shortstop and hit for a high average with power. Was regarded by some as one of the best, if not the best, defenders in the 2021 draft. Complete profile on both sides of the ball gives him an all-star ceiling, but development has been somewhat slowed by long-term injuries in both 2022 and 2023.

Cam Booser or Zach Kelly could improve this bullpen right now. The former would require you to DFA a guy, unless an il stunt is imminent. Would anyone cry if Joely was DFA’d? Kenley is worth seeing if he can get it right but with the former I’m ready to move on.

The difference is a few hundred miles. I just don't believe a guy can field baseball in multiple positions plus to better defense and then all of a sudden get mixed up by it at the MLB level. I'm also not convinced the bat is ever really there for Rafaela, positional versatility helps his value. I'm 100% for seeing if he can be the full time CF long term, but right now he makes all the sense in the world at SS.

But that's just the thing, they're not really jerking him around. He was a short stop as a kid, and even after they moved him to the outfield he's played at least one game a week in the infield throughout his entire time in the minors. If he plays two more of those at SS and two less in the OF that's not really any different than what they're doing noq.

I would normally disagree but given this teams affinity to not care up SS defense I have to agree with you.

Honestly, Kike would be less disasterous at SS than Hamilton.

There's no reason why he can't start a couple games a week. Hamilton can't be a MLB starting short stop. Grissom is not a SS, Reyes may be your best option defensively (not named Rafaela) and he can't hit.

I'll say it again again....again. I think it should be Rafaela, temporarily. If this team wants to compete this year then Rafaela should be your starting SS until a better option presents itself or a move can be made in the trade market that sends Rafaela back to CF. The pitching actually looks good, how long can that hold with subpar play at SS? Guys getting on base and double plays not being turned will take it's toll. It also uncrowds the outfield when Ref comes back. This team can't afford to have Pablo Reyes, David Hamilton, and Rafaela all in the lineup at the same time.

Up until now he had been playing SS, he played short stop before he played CF, and even as he came up in the minor leagues he still played SS once a week. They're not messing with his development by having him play SS 3-4 times a week instead of 1-2. Which odddly enough NOW seems to a be a very effing stupid time to STOP playing Rafaela at SS. They were willing to play him at 2B this year, this literally makes zero sense. They can still view him as their long term CF and play him as a starting SS temporarily. It's really the only option they have. Unless you want to watch David Hamilton bounce balls to 1B all year. This team is built on ground ball pitching, things will be ugly if they keep that hole up the middle, I promise.

You can't practice fast twitch muscle fibers, you can't practice arm length, you can't practise height. This team doesn't have a practice problem, they have a roster problem.

Everything is a teachable skill, but teaching will only make you so much better. You can't just teach someone to have better tools. E.G. Hamilton has the worse arm strength for any short stop I've ever seen. I think guys like Casas can be coached up to be a better defender at 1B but the black hole you have a SS has a blatantly obvious in house solution that the team is ignoring and it's going to start hurting them quick. A lot more ball are hit to SS than to CF. The drop off from Rafaela to Duran is no where near as bad as Rafaela to Hamilton. I'm sorry, but Hamilton does not belong at SS.

Me too, but if Story is out for the year I'm fine with Rafaela on a 75/25 CF/SS split until Mayer is ready. It's not really any different than what he did in the minors except he'd predominately be playing SS over CF opposed to CF over SS. Soxprospects talked about this being their best option and Romey Gonzalez being the better bench choice. Seems like they've already done the later, I don't know when we see Rafaela at SS, they might only have him play there 1-2 times a week and roll with Pablo but I suspect in some capacity we see him there more. If Story is out for the year, I rental may be looked at.
