I think it's fair to say they can not. Wong and Refsnyder are literally #1 and #2 on the team in BABIP, probably no one is due for a regression more than them. Refnysder has always hit lefties well, but Wong's batted ball data is horrible, he's probably due for a regerssion more than anyone on this team. Wonder if Teel is in the cards after the trade deadline? not to replace Wong but to platoon him with Wong for a playoff push.

It’s not just about the closers role, as much as it’s about the bullpen overall. There’s a lot of young talent there, and Jansen is a HOF talent leadership there. Things could get very thin really quick if someone goes down or underperforms in the playoffs. Jansen is the kind of guy trade for if you have playoff ambitions. I got no problem if the Sox decide to be sellers if they make an honest effort to retool this offseason. But if they should or do go for it, you keep Kenley

I literally came in here to say exactly this. I get trading Jansen if you're sellers, but you keep him if you want to make a serious playoff run.

I think a hitter has to be closer to ready than a pitcher to be grabbed and kept. If a team really believes in a guy they might pluck that A/AA starter with a 5.00 ERA but 12K/9 and move him to the bullpen. We also have to remember they will ideally need a spot for Hendricks/Story/Giolito on the 40 man next year too.

I remember liking the trade at the time. For buying the prospects, but also because I assumed JBJ would be a defensive 4th OF and the Sox were going to buy an outfielder. Mainly Seiya Suzuki, is the guy I thought would be their target. If we buy Suzuki in 2022, we probably don't end up buying Yoshida in 2023. Here's to hoping Yoshida gets healthy and hits a bit, but I don't thin he'll ever play up to his contract.

This is the right place to ramble. This team is pretty much in the same place it's been mid year the last few years. I don't expect the results this year to be much different BUT the road ahead probably looks much rosier this year than it did in 2023, 2022. Pitching is good, guys who are performing are generally young and locked up. Our farm is the strongest it's been in almost a decade with a lot of those guys close to MLB ready. They are 3 games out of a wild card, I'm not sure you can sell. You don't have to empty the farm and go big, but you can't sell. I wouldn't mind a lateral move here if a guy with multiple years of control becomes available. For example, sell Pivetta and buy Crochet The Sox have a roster crunch coming up, rule 5 is going to be very interesting next year, so they almost need to trade a few guys down on the farm. $12 million under the limit is right up against the limit. That's saying we want to spend right up to the limit. Some of those costs aren't fixed, if you have to add to the 40 man whether it's trades or callups because guys get injured that can add millions, also you want room to deal at the deadline. I'd say a fair person would consider $12 million under, up against the cap.

Check the payroll page. + $8.17 million for Bello That's 19.47 If we want to add in Whitlocks $4.68 and Giolito's 19.25 that's $43.40 million on the rotation I believe. Certainly low for a "big market" team.

Houck maybe didn't look as sharp this game? I didn't get a chance to watch it last night but he still walked nobody and only gave up 1 extra base hit. Did the phillies just bunch a ton of singles together to get 3 runs or was Houck lucky? If this was him on a down day then he's going to be good still.

Didn’t Bellos extension kick in this year? I think just him and Pivetta eat up more than $16 million; the rest of the rotation is cheap so point taken. Noteworthy, Sox have more money on starters on the IL than they do in their rotation.
