  1. That was an exciting game. Pennant race baseball. Both teams are loaded with big time , major league talent. We all know that you can't win them all. Stop looking for scapegoats. Come back strong today. Sunday night should be a lock. The Sox are still in a great position. Enjoy it all.
  2. Ideally, you trade some prospects to fill immediate needs , and hold on to others to fill future needs. The trick is to know which ones to trade and which ones to keep. One thing to remember about prospects ; they are not the Last of the Mohicans. There are always more coming along.
  3. The playoffs may be a crapshoot , but you can't win the World Series without going through the playoffs. Being in the playoffs should always be the goal. It means you had an interesting and exciting season with a chance to win it all. Who wants to sit through dismal, non-competitive seasons , hoping that the prospects we are holding onto may someday get us to the playoffs ?
  4. Costas and Kaat are doing the game on the MLB channel.
  5. Is the Sox problem the bullpen or the manager ? I don't think the jury would be out very long on that one. Verdict : This manager is not nearly as good as his bullpen.
  6. What Price did was uncalled for and unacceptable. He was 1000% wrong. No amount of spin can change that. He needs to apologize. Then we move on. As for the other players ; most of them have underperformed pretty much all year. There must be a reason for that, but I have no idea what it is. Farrell and the coaches should have some clue. Do they?
  7. Farrell is not doing a good job no matter how you slice it. Probably too late in the season to make a change now , but it still might be worth a shot.
  8. Something that is wrong should not be ignored just because there are worse things. I am sure every team , and every work place for that matter, has at least one bad apple. The troubling thing here is that Price evidently has a group of supporters on the team. Let them come forward and explain themselves as well. Get the whole thing out in the open , apologize if warranted, then put it behind them and get down to business. The pennant race is underway.
  9. There seems to be some question as to whether Pedroia was one of the ones cheering on Price. I would expect better from Dustin ( That's not how we do things around here ) Pedroia. It would be interesting to know just which players were involved.
  10. The incident causes me to lose a lot of respect for David Price. Forget the Hall of Fame credentials, etc. The fact is that Eck is now in his sixties , twice the age of Price. For the 6'5" Price to get in his face, cursing at him and trying to intimidate him is totally out of line. It shows a lack of class and character. Sadly , he also seems to have an influence on at least some of his teammates. And as for Farrell ; his failure to deal with the situation, shows a weakness and lack of leadership.
  11. By any objective evaluation , this team is under performing. The repeated fundamental mistakes and sometimes lackadaisical play reflects poorly on the manager and coaches. Farrell has to be on the line for it. " Player's manager " or not , there definitely seems to be a lack of leadership . Too late to make a change this season. What we really need now is for the so-called " Killer Bs " to start performing up to the expectations we had for them going into the season. If they do , we certainly should be able to hold off the Yankees. Otherwise , it will be tough.
  12. Hard to believe the Angels are using Bud Norris as their closer. Wow !
  13. D.D. took over a team that had back to back dismal last place finishes. Won the Division last year and is leading it so far this year. Ortiz retired. Added players like Sale , Price , Pomeranz and Kimbrel. The results speak for themselves. Dombrowski is a knowledgable , experienced baseball man. Ben was a novice. I cannot understand the Cherington nostalgia that some people have. Maybe it is the love of following the progress of prospects through the system , and the willingness to abide cellar dwelling Sox teams as long as the " future looks bright ".
  14. Espinosa was touted as the next Pedro. But they meant Beato not Martinez.
  15. Nick , You're talking like a mamaluke. Stop it.
  16. As a rule , I think the MVP should be for an every day player. Pedro was the exception to the rule. Generally speaking , the MVP is for the player of the year. The Cy Young is for the pitcher of the year. The Silver Slugger Award is not remotely comparable.
  17. Trading Shaw was a blunder. No sense crying about it now. Lin is batting .333 with an .871 OPS. The assumption is that he will drop off considerably due to his minor league stats. But that was also said about Shaw. Why not wait and see? Anyway, there should be no urgency in trading for a third baseman. We are 3 1/2 games up. Devers is waiting in the wings. As is Holt. And possibly Peralta or maybe even Panda. Sit tight until the deadline. We should also know more about Carson Smith by then.
  18. DIRECTV gives a choice of feeds with the baseball package. Also the pre and post game shows. Most cable companies do not , unless it is a light schedule and they have open channels available.
  19. With some teams , it is fairly obvious how to construct the traditional batting order. The Sox have a number of players who are pretty much interchangeable as to where they bat. The important thing is to have a good lineup one through nine. With that said , my current order would be : Pedroia , Bogaerts, Bradley, Betts, Moreland , Ramirez, Benintendi, Vasquez/Leon , Lin /Marrero. Again , if everything is clicking , it doesn't make much difference. If everything is not clicking , moving the deck chairs around probably will not help matters.
  20. Looks to me that the Sox are now starting to put it into high gear. Win tonight and the lead is four games. Maybe up five or six at the break. Then sweep the Yanks at Fenway and it is all over but the shouting.
  21. That is why there is no need to lament the trading of prospects to acquire proven performers like Sale , Kimbrel and Pomeranz. They are the players who can put you on top. There are always more young prospects coming along. There is a steady pipeline from Latin America that shows no sign of drying up any time soon.
  22. I don't agree that the division is up for grabs and anyone can win it. I think people say that out of habit. If everything goes right for the Yankees , they might just stay in the race. The O's starting pitching is terrible. The Jays are not a good team. The Rays are pesky , but not a real threat. There is an excellent chance that the Sox will pull away in the second half. They are clearly the most talented, deepest team in the division.
  23. I'm starting to think that Betances has some choke in him. Great stuff , but does not seem to like the pressure situations.
  24. Trade deadline rumors are as annoying , and usually as inaccurate , as those dumb mock drafts in the NFL. Anyway , I would say that the bullpen is the least of our needs. Third base is the obvious problem area.
  25. A lot of fans fall in love with their " young prospects " and tend to overvalue them. A lights out closer like Kimbrel is worth plenty. Just look at the box scores daily and see the anguish many teams are having with blown saves. The prospects we gave up for Kimbrel are nothing special. More like them come along all the time. No way we regret that trade.
