  1. Sox are 10-8. Cleveland is 9-7. Texas -7-10. Toronto - 4-12. Mets- 8-10. Cubs -10-7. Dodgers -8-9. Point is , it is much too early to be concerned and look for scapegoats. It's a long season. Things will work out. Take it easy folks.
  2. There is a steady flow of young talent coming from Latin America , as well as from U.S. colleges. Three years from now there will be numerous top prospects whose names are unknown at this time. The moral: Enjoy this ball club now. Don't worry so much about the future. Things will work out.
  3. . Hi Slash , Good to see you again. It's your thread. Score it any way you see fit. No problem.
  4. I am happy to have JBJ in center. But it is a little hard to take this thread seriously. How does 1 for 4 not beat 0 for 3 ? Even the horrible Harold Lederman would not have called that round even. Season to date : Ellsbury - .348 , .940 ,1 HR. Jackie : .286 , .782 , 0 HRs. Now on the DL. Yup , all even so far. I might add that I think there is a good chance that Jackie will have the better year when all is said and done.
  5. Exactly. There are situations that are somewhat "clutch " , then there are the really critical ones. Sometimes , it is hard to separate and define them , but you usually will know a truly " clutch " situation when you see one. It is too simplistic to say all post season at bats are clutch. I doubt there are any stats or consensus of opinion on a player's performance in the truly critical at bats.
  6. Kelly has been pitching very well in relief. One bad outing and you are a bum ?
  7. As a (very) long time Sox fan , I can say that I have never been more optimistic going into a season than I am this year. This is an excellent team. If the pitching gets healthy , they may run away with the division.
  8. I don't know if you can compare the probabilities of a flip of a coin , roll of the dice , spin of the wheel ,etc. to a head to head athletic contest with much at stake and emotions running high.
  9. Okay. Very good. Thanks.
  10. I see where Eck has taken a job with the Oakland A's. Will miss him on NESN telecasts.
  11. I think it depends on the task at hand. For something strictly physical , adrenaline would be more important. When mental aspects are involved , composure comes more into play.
  12. Yes, but the point is that Puerto Rico is not a foreign country.
  13. Question : The Netherlands team largely consists of Carribean players. Why then is it that Puerto Rico is a separate team from the U.S. ? Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens. Somebody has to ask these questions.
  14. The Yankees have some question marks. But they also have some talent. If a few things fall into place , they could contend. Over the years , I learned that it is never a good idea to underestimate them. Personally , I would love to see a good Boston / New York pennant race.
  15. There is also a prestige factor that comes into play. Most players are not that deep into metrics. Each spot in the batting order carries certain expectations. An elite hitter (Betts for instance ) reasonably would expect to bat third or fourth.
  16. These kind of gimmicks should be avoided like the plague. What is next ? A home run hitting contest after 12 innings ? Look to speed the game up in other ways , but stay away from this kind of thing.
  17. It is debatable whether athletes can actually raise the level of their performance in " clutch " situations. However , there can be no doubt that choking is real. Some people get so caught up with stats and probabilities that they forget that we are talking about human beings , not the roll of dice or the spinning of a wheel. Humans have emotions like nervousness , anxiety and fear. Some are able to deal with it better than others. It is easy to spot choking in sports like golf , basketball, pool , etc. In a head to head situation in baseball , one player's choking may make it seem that the opponent is raising his game. In the end, " clutch" may simply be being able to control one's emotions in pressure situations. In a sport like baseball, even then there is no guarantee of success.
  18. Sox fans , for the most part , are loyal. But they can be tough on newcomers. When a newly acquired player gets off to a poor start , things can get kind of ugly. A thick skin is required.
  19. I don't see any serious weaknesses on this club. That is how it should be since we gave up some excellent prospects to get to this point. Of course , serious injuries to key players will cause a problem for any team.
  20. Papi has a special place in Sox history. Without him we would be nearing a 100 year drought. Foxx was a great hitter. But there really is no argument here. Ted Williams was not only the Sox greatest hitter, but arguably, the greatest hitter of all time.
  21. Sad. We don't know the details , but I think some of these guys need better guidance. They often come from abject poverty. Then , they have more money than they dreamed of. This sometimes leads to reckless behavior. Fast cars , speeding , drinking and driving , etc. Don't know if that was the case here, but it happens too often to be ignored. Perhaps management , the union and the agents can work on it.
  22. Using the All Star Game to determine HFA was strictly a gimmick to boost the sagging ratings for the game. No system is perfect , but I think this is a change for the better.
  23. Thanks , Kimmi . Good to see you again.
  24. Thanks , Spudboy. Good to be here.
  25. Thanks , Moon. Great to see you here.
