  1. A guy like Sale cannot be had for these kind of prospects. It took top of the line guys like Moncada and Kopech to get Sale. As it stands , the Kimbrel deal was clearly a good one. To still criticize it seems more like stubbornness than it does reality. As for the money , don't worry about it. This is a big market , highly profitable team. It is not a fantasy league.
  2. My point is : If you think Margot , Guerra , Asuaje and Allen were an overpay for an elite closer like Kimbrel , who exactly do you think they might have brought in return ? Someone better than Kimbrel ?
  3. I would think Farrell is on very thin ice. A good road trip is needed. Some very winnable games coming up. Better win them. A losing trip could spell finis for Farrell.
  4. w. As noted previously, the Yankees have a good lineup , bench and bullpen. Starting pitching could be their Achilles heel. Yankee fans will soon tire of hearing " He didn't have his best stuff tonight ". " Just missed his spots ".
  5. We will just have to see about Espinoza. So far, it has just been hype. And he has not lived up to it as yet. Hard throwing young pitchers are becoming very commonplace. Time will tell if he is special. There is no way to know that at this time.
  6. To be objective , Kimbrel is one of the keys to this team's season ( And post season ) . We traded Margot , Guerra , Asuaje and Allen to acquire him. Margot is a good prospect who was blocked in our outfield plans. He may become a decent major leaguer. The other three are marginal prospects. That is not what I would call giving up an arm and a leg. More like a tonsillectomy . Something you can easily live without. As for Kimbrel's salary ; every player in MLB is overpaid. The market decides. Some owners are willing to pay extra to win. Some are not. This is big business. Not fantasy baseball. These guys are billionaires.
  7. All kidding aside, I would be very surprised if D.D. was giving any serious consideration to trading JBJ at this point. It makes no sense.
  8. The idea that closers are overvalued and that we overpaid for Kimbrel is a remnant of the failed " Moneyball " concept. Made famous by the loser known as Billy Beane. Folks , this is big business , not fantasy baseball. If you want to win a championship , a lights out closer is invaluable. What we gave up for Kimbrel was basically peanuts. Those type of prospects are plentiful , and a new supply comes through the pipeline every year.
  9. Tough call for the third base coach. The leftfielder was playing very shallow and got to the ball quickly. A good throw was going to nail him. Holliday was on deck. I think the consensus is that you take the chance with two outs. Hard to argue with that.
  10. Kimbrel strikes out the side on nine pitches. That is known as an "Immaculate Inning ". Does not happen too often.
  11. Yeah. I was trying to be kind. O'Brien has a WAM of zero.
  12. Maybe we need some new analytic metric system to determine the value of announcers. WAM - Wins Above Morgan? It is traditional for Sox fans to bash other team's and national announcers. We have that ingrained in us. To be honest, Dave O'Brien is nothing to write home about.
  13. Bringing your closer in with the tying run on third and one out in the 8th is more of a desperation move than it is a real game plan. Fortunately , Kimbrel was up to the task. Such a shame that we "overpaid " for him.
  14. No question Bradley in center and Benintendi in left is better defensively than Benintendi in center and Young in left. But how much offense is it worth giving up to get a somewhat improved defense? That is the issue. Anyway , the problem goes away if Jackie starts hitting. I feel confident that he will. My point is that you can't keep putting him out there for his glove alone. You need some production at the plate too. An OPS of .800 would be more than enough for sure.
  15. It should not take much to win this one. I can't see the Twins doing anything at all against Sale.
  16. My feeling on JBJ is that the hitting will come around. He has hit in the past. No reason why he can't do it now. I do feel that improved hitting is necessary to justify putting him out there every day. We all know he is a great defender , but that is not enough. Most , if not all , centerfielders are great defenders. That is why they are out there. You could make a case that JBJ is the best , but the difference is not great enough to compensate for the lack of offense. A couple of days off and some work with Chili Davis should get him going. Patience is a virtue ; a virtue in short supply with Sox fans.
  17. My take on the Yankees is that they have an excellent lineup , strong bench, outstanding bullpen and a well stocked farm system. The starting pitching is somewhat questionable. The success of the rotation will either make or break their season. And is Cashman willing to part with prospects if pitching help is needed ?
  18. If nothing else , the shakeup in the lineup may send a message to these guys that all is not well. The have under achieved big time so far. There is too much talent for this to continue. And Farrell is surely on a short leash himself. Let's see if they can wake up against this eminently mediocre pitcher today.
  19. Harm , Any word from Steamer on when the Mariners might finally win a pennant?
  20. Some complained that we gave up too much for Kimbrel. Mortgaged the future by trading four prospects. So far the four prospects have not amounted to a hill of beans. Meanwhile , we have a dominant closer. One of the best.
  21. Tesla is working on it.
  22. Well , Hardy did the same thing the previous night and the ball fell behind him. Watching this play unfold , I did not even think about the infield fly rule. I wonder how many really did ? I just thought Hardy screwed up again. I do think that if the infield fly rule was called , and Hardy failed to catch the ball, Sox fans would be complaining that it should not have been called. The umps make the split second decision. We can form our opinions after the results are known.
  23. The consensus around baseball is that the Sox are coming off badly in all of this. Most seem to feel that Machado's slide was not all that bad. Throwing at his head was inexcusable. It cannot be defended. Pedroia understood that.Baltimore retaliates by hitting Mookie. Then there comes the racial stuff with Jones. Then , after the cheering for Jones , Sale throws at Machado again. Now , Sale may get a suspension. The whole thing has been poorly handled. Like it or not , most impartial observers think the Sox were mostly to blame. There is no more die-hard Sox fan than me, but I don't get the idea of us being the victims here. And I can't blame Machado for being upset. It is time for Farrell to show some leadership and put a stop to this. Maybe then the team can forget the distractions and start playing smart baseball. If it continues , there will be an all out brawl , with possible injuries and suspensions. We should not be rooting for that to happen.
  24. 1- Hardy messed up a similar play the night before. He looked to be struggling with this one too. That could be why the infield fly rule was not called. 2- The players and coaches should be aware as to whether or not it was called. 3- If it was called and the ball dropped in , fans would be complaining about that. 4- No matter how you slice it , it was bad baseball by the players and coaches involved. Not the umpires fault at all.
