  1. It seems to me that D.D. held onto Devers and Travis because they cover the two areas of impending need. The main focus now should be to lock up the " core four " and rebuild the farm. This team can win without Donaldson. Despite the sluggish start , this is a really talented group. No need to acquire every all star out there.
  2. I think I've got it now. You can enhance your chances of winning by having Kimbrel pitch the 6th and using Ross or Kelly to close. In football , it is a good idea to go for it on 4th and 20 from your own 15 with a minute left in the half. NBA ? Have Isaiah Thomas shoot free throws underhanded. It worked for Barry. Now you are ready to succeed as a manager/head coach. Don't forget to bring your calculator. By the way, in hockey it might be great to pull the goalie in the 2nd period if trailing by a goal. The sooner you catch up , the better. Honestly , analytics have a use , but some of the deep thinkers want to reinvent the games and throw the baby out with the bath water. I don't foresee any teams adopting some of these " revolutionary " ideas any time soon. Billy Beane might actually win something before it happens. Don't hold your breath.
  3. Koji is a shell of his former self. If you held him up to your ear , you could hear the ocean.
  4. It is not a question of slugging vs. OBP. Slugging is a part of OBP. A home run also credits your OBP. The point is that you will score more runs with extra base hits.
  5. It could be the exposure to Sale, but E-Rod looks to be growing as a pitcher. He could become a real good one yet.
  6. So many stats are around these days. Sometimes they become redundant. OPS is just a stat that someone created by combining OBP and SLP. The problem is that it gives credit for the same thing twice. And it gives exactly equal status to OB P and SLP . Player " A " leads off and homers. One run scores. But you could say that his OBP led to the run . One can always play around with numbers. As a rule , extra base hits are more likely to produce runs. The Sox have been a good example of that so far this year. As their power numbers increase , so will their runs scored.
  7. Okay , but OBP encompasses everything positive. A walk or a single may or may not lead to a run. Even two singles. A home run is at least one run for sure. But either way it all shows up good on your OBP. It is harder to score runs without some slugging .
  8. I agree the runs will come. But they will come when the power hitting improves. OBP is a useful stat, but it is flawed . A walk or weak single is just as good as a double or home run. Obviously , that does not make sense. Bogaerts is a good example. He is working on his OBP by going to the opposite field. Good , but he is sacrificing power. You certainly want guys to get on base , but you do need guys to drive them in too. The Sox have numerous guys with home run power. When they start displaying it , the runs will come.
  9. Going for it on fourth down is a very general statement. It all depends on the situation. There are several factors involved. Then it is the coach's decision. Most MLB teams are heavily into statistics. That does not mean that they are going to adopt every off the wall idea that comes along.
  10. Tito already had an outstanding closer, so he was able to (over) use Miller in a different role. Using your closer to get important outs in the 6th , 7th or 8th is something that the analytical deep thinkers often propose. But MLB managers have not agreed that it is a good practice. And , while there are occasional exceptions , championship teams will usually have a dominant closer. It is tough to reach the top without one.
  11. A lights out closer is critical to success. There has to be much value in that. As for D.D. ; after back to back dismal seasons , Ben was shown the door. The Sox won the division last year and are generally favored to repeat this year. Spin it any way you want, but the bottom line is winning.
  12. Capt. Edward Smith , HMS Titanic; " If we just move the red deck chairs over here and put the blue ones over there , we should be alright ".
  13. Young stands a better chance against Chapman than does Moreland. It was the percentage move. I imagine Selsky would play first if needed.
  14. Just missed the walk off homer. Exciting finish.
  15. Chapman is feeling the pressure. Over throwing.
  16. Closing ain't easy. Even for Chapman.
  17. Well, so much for that comment.
  18. Betances can be shaky. Maybe has a little choke in him.
  19. Third time through the order. They should start to figure Severino out now.
  20. It seemed to me that E-Rod was told to drill Machado, but he did not have his heart in it. Pretty sure he could have hit him if he really wanted to. Don't know if Barnes was told to do it or he did it on his own. Either way , you don't throw at a guy's head. Give Barnes the benefit of the doubt if you must , but it sure looked like he threw at the head to me. I can't blame Pedroia for not wanting to be associated with that. Pedroia has long been respected throughout baseball. Not so sure about Barnes. How much do we know about him? Is he liked and respected in the clubhouse and around the league ? Anyway , the whole thing reflects poorly on Farrell and his leadership. The retaliation should have taken place at the first opportunity.
  21. "I overslept....". " I didn't know the gun was loaded...."....... " I don't know how that substance could have gotten into my system" .............." The dog ate my homework" ............" The pitch just got away from me"..........
  22. A few points: 1- Common sense would indicate that Farrell wanted Machado drilled. 2- Pedroia is taking heat for his comments , but can you blame him for not wanting to be associated with throwing at a guy's head. 3- How much do we know about Barnes ? What kind of a guy is he ? 4- The right thing to do would have been to retaliate the next time Machado came to the plate. Drill him in the ribs. Warnings would then be issued and that should have been the end of it. 5- The idea that they couldn't do that because Wright is a knuckleballer is ridiculous. He certainly has a good enough fastball to get the point across. 6- While the Sox certainly needed to retaliate , the whole thing was not handled properly. And that has to be on Farrell.
  23. There is always a need for "possession receivers " and " blue collar " players. The " lunch pail " type. The " overachievers " if you will.
  24. Looked to me that Rodriguez was told to drill Machado , but didn't really want to do it. As for Barnes , I cannot condone throwing at a guy's head , if that indeed was his intention. Interesting that Pedroia did not back up Barnes or Farrell on the incident.
