  1. Wright is once again on the I.L. This after giving up back to back jacks to the Dodgers . It is way past time to cut ties with the problem child .
  2. Now , Manfred has another gimmick they are trying out in the minors . A batter can " steal first base " if the ball gets past the catcher . Stupid.
  3. In other news , Sox problem child , Steven Wright, is once again back on the I.L. This after giving up back to back jacks last night . This clears roster space for Cashner .
  4. I have no problem with someone else doing it either . (As long as I am not paying them ) But I don't value their opinions more than I value my own .
  5. I do understand what you are saying . I just think the future of baseball depends greatly on attracting young fans . That should be the first priority . And it can be done . Look at Yankee Stadium , Fenway Park , Wrigley Field , Citizen's Bank Park and a couple of others . Plenty of young people , male and female , having a great time . You have to have an appealing product . Robot umps doesn't necessarily help or hurt that .
  6. Big difference . Most of the hit / error calls are pretty routine . A few could go either way and are judgement calls . The fans are well aware of this . This other thing is kind of bizarre . And it could have an effect on a player's earning potential . I have no problem with those who swear by WAR . I just don't . I identify more with the average fan who wants to go to the ballpark , have a beer and a hot dog , and have a good time . I have no desire to watch and review every play of every game . To each his own .
  7. Who are these people ? Who trains them ? Is this their full time job ? How much do they make ? Sounds kind of odd to me . I know that there are a lot of excellent center fielders and shortstops . Of course there are . That's why they are center fielders and shortstops . I think ours are pretty darn good . I don't really need some trained , calibrated , rotated , bleary eyed jabroni staying up all night watching every play , evaluating them and assigning them a numerical rating .
  8. He has not been able to maintain 97 on his fastball. Often , the drop off is significant.
  9. . Do you think the closer situation should have been addressed during the off season ? Instead of when we are 10 games behind the Yankees ? And before it would cost prospects?
  10. I don't like bad ball and strike calls either. I also don't like boneheaded base running, errors on easy plays , pitchers who can't throw strikes, hitters who chase pitches way out of the zone , guys who don't hustle , etc. , etc . , etc. Lots of things not to like . I do think MLB should hold umpires accountable for their performance. But part of the game is , " Kill the ump " , " Come on blue , you bum " , " Get some glasses , ump " , etc. Ball and strike calls are the least of things ailing baseball .
  11. Sale ' s diminished velocity is a real concern . Without the velocity , he is simply not the same pitcher that he was . He can still be effective, but not the dominant ace that we thought we signed .
  12. Baseball is a sport . A game . Human judgement and human error is a part of it . Robot umps is an attempt to get the ball and strike counts 100% correct . Okay , but that does not make the game more appealing. Part of the fun for fans is complaining about the umps . Trying to automate the sport , while admirable, does not make it more fun , exciting or interesting. As usual, Manfred and his flunkies are barking up the wrong tree.
  13. The bullpen was not properly addressed in the off season . It figured to be a problem , and it has been a problem. No amount of spin or excuses changes that . The idea that they have been greatly overworked is just not true . Their number of innings pitched are pretty much in line with the other top relievers in MLB . No doubt the starters have disappointed, but that does not excuse the bullpen. The bullpen has hurt the team . Hopefully , Eovaldi can be a difference maker .
  14. WAR , especially dWAR , is heavily influenced by personal opinion. We don't have to agree with , or accept , someone else's opinion.
  15. I think he fills the bill for a number five starter . Not bad at all.
  16. Here is an example : Last night , with the Miami pitcher on first base , the Met's pitcher threw over six times to " keep him close ." A total waste of time . What pitch clock ? The ump seems powerless to do anything. That should change . A Mets - Marlins game is bad enough as it is .
  17. Just tell the umpires that they are in charge . Tell them to keep the game moving. It can be done . Not all that complicated. When the baseball is good , competitive and fast paced , no one is falling asleep .
  18. I don't have much hope of the commish doing anything except dumb gimmicks. As for the owners and their G.M. s ; get busy . Let's see a couple of trades to get things rolling. Create some interest, some excitement. It was the same with free agency . Day after day of nothing. Just excuses and reasons for doing nothing. You don't see that in the other major sports.
  19. What the average Joe and JoAnn fan wants is a fun day at the ballpark. Some teams have been able to provide that . Some have not . You want people to spend their money ; make it worthwhile and fun for them . You don't need a lot of dumb rules changes and stupid gimmicks . Just common sense .
  20. So far , the trading deadline action has been as boring and slow moving as the free agency period was . The NBA is grabbing all the headlines. MLB just does not know how to do things. The commissioner and the owners just don't get it .
  21. Eovaldi is the best option to close . Trade for a decent starting pitcher and take our chances . That's all you can do at this point . Becoming a seller is out of the question. The defending champs , right in the middle of the wild card hunt do not give up . No chance of that .
  22. The biggest thing Manfred should do is crack down on the tanking . Nobody wants to watch that . And he should give the umpires the authority to keep the game moving at a good pace . Fans want competitive, fast moving baseball . Attendance is down , but there is still interest where the team is competitive and properly promoted . When you look at teams like the Yankees , Red Sox , Cubs , Phillies , Dodgers and a couple of others , you see full ballparks and enthusiastic fans . It can be done .
  23. Verlander was just saying what almost everyone else believes is true . I am less impressed by Manfred every day . He has no solutions for what ails the game , only bad gimmicks. Torre is just doing Manfred's bidding .
  24. I only saw Duffy pitch once this year . He was terrible. I can't evaluate him off of that , but as they say , " Let the buyer beware." The Sox should look elsewhere for pitching.
  25. I was one of the first to mention the apparent lack of focus and preparation in spring training . Very few agreed with me at the time . Now , almost all agree that things should have been done differently in the spring. However , we can't use that as an excuse forever. It should not make a difference now . It is time for these guys to step up and produce the way we expected they would. No excuses .
