  1. Bell , I have never said you are not a good , loyal fan . I just think the goal should always be to get better . Winning four titles does not change that . Yes , we have the highest payroll . But the money has not been allocated wisely this season . That is poor money management . The bullpen was an obvious weakness from the start . I said that at the time . I was told that I was wrong . It came to pass as I feared it would . But I am still wrong . I've paid my dues , too . And then some .
  2. That is the ultimate fallback position. We won four titles , so this is okay . Wrong . It is not okay . And , you should not downplay the significance of ignoring the bullpen. In today's game , the bullpen is very , very important. Probably more important than ever.
  3. The won / lost record may not necessarily improve , ( it would be extremely tough to improve on last year's record ) but you do need to try and improve the team . Standing pat ( or worse ) is never a good idea . Always try to get better . Presumably, the competition is doing that . I am not second guessing here . I have said this all along . And I said it in 2014 also. A sports franchise is no different than any other business.
  4. Harm , Any word from fangraphs on when the Mariner's goal might be to win their first ever pennant ?
  5. Maybe . To me , whether you are running an MLB team or the corner candy store ; you should constantly be looking to improve the service , improve the product and improve the whole operation. When you become complacent and stand still, others will gain on you . I have long believed this .
  6. In my view . Ben made the same mistakes following the 2013 title that D.D. did this year . Dombrowski should have learned from the 2014 results. Evidently, he didn't.
  7. While it is certainly disappointing for a 119 win , world championship team to be reduced to chasing a wild card spot the following year , that is the current situation. However , it is not reason to throw in the towel and just give up . We all should know that, in the post season , anything can happen. A team can get hot and / or lucky and win it all . Just have to get there first . The next two weeks will tell a lot . Don't start liquidating just yet .
  8. Absolutely. D.D. assembled this bullpen. ( And the whole pitching staff ). The results are on him more than on Cora .
  9. I don't think the Sox bullpen has been overworked any more than most pens are these days . It is being used as an excuse for their ( predictably) poor performance.
  10. Without question, the starting pitching has been a big disappointment. Spring training may have been a part of it . It is also true that expectations for them were unrealistic. A look at their career numbers would suggest that they are just not as good as we thought they were . Add in Sale ' s and Eovaldi's arm issues and there were certainly some question marks all around. As for the bullpen ; I think that is on D.D. more than it is on Cora .
  11. Another chapter in the ongoing soap opera , " As the Game Thread turns " . Tune in tomorrow for unbridled hope and joy or utter despair . Maybe both .
  12. I have to disagree . An experienced G.M. thinking he could lose Kimbrel and Kelly from his bullpen without it making a difference is foolish. He needed to do something. To me it seems like he was complacent and overconfident. Flush with success and maybe a little smug .
  13. Brasier optioned to Pawtucket . D. Hernandez up . Dombrowski is getting serious .
  14. Closing ain't easy .
  15. The Sox have a very realistic shot at a seven game winning streak. If you think Toronto is bad , wait until you see the Orioles. This is like men against boys . However , at some point, the Sox are going to have to show they can beat the good teams . Halfway through July , they really haven't shown that . Next week will begin the critical stretch . Time to step up .
  16. WAR is the invention of a sportswriter. It uses mostly basic stats , mixed together in a complicated formula , with some opinion added . When run through the blender , it spits out a numerical rating for a given player . Different websites use somewhat different formulas , but the result is supposed to tell you how many wins a player is worth as opposed to some jabroni . It gives a nice , convenient number . It does have some value . But we really don't have to swear by it . I know I don't. It does little to enhance my enjoyment of the game .
  17. The way I understand it is that any time the ball gets past the catcher , the batter can take off for first base . Just like it is now with strike three . Actually , I don't even like the present rule . To me , when you strike out, you should be out .
  18. What I want to know is ; concerning these folks who are ( allegedly ) watching every pitch of every game to figure out the UZR ratings : Where are they ? And , are they being held against their will ?
  19. That could be part of their long range ( 18 year ) plan .
  20. Nunez did some good things for the Red Sox . Give him credit for that. He is what he is . A utility infielder. There are a lot of them around.
  21. The Blue Jays are emulating horse racing . Checking the blood lines , looking for thoroughbreds. Maybe they will hire Bob Baffert as a consultant.
  22. Bell , That could be . I don't know. I do think that when you are the defending champs , when you have the big payroll, you really should have all your ducks in a row , so to speak . The bullpen looked liked a glaring weakness from day one.
  23. Kimmi , I think an impartial observer would look at our off season like this : To D.D. " You lost your closer , (and 42 saves ) who has been one of your top performers for the last three years . You also lost your best ( albeit sometimes erratic) power arm in the pen . You basically did nothing to compensate for these losses . You took the position that the remaining guys could handle things . That was a real leap of faith . And it has not worked out very well . The performance of your starters has been an unexpected disappointment . The performance of your bullpen has been predictable. "
  24. The good news is that with there being so many garbage teams in the A.L. these days , you can always get on a roll by beating up on them . Seven games on tap versus the dregs of the East . Chance to gain some ground . More good news : Toronto has optioned " Rowdy " Roddy Tellez.
