  1. Well , I can't help it . All those damn kids running on my lawn all the time gets me upset.
  2. I think we were all better in 2012 than we are now . That's how it goes .
  3. I don't know . We have a lot of success and enjoyment to show for " mortgaging the future ". It seems to have been worth it . And the kids we traded were really not all that good for the most part . We were smart enough to keep Devers . The situation we are in now is mostly caused by the underachievement of some of the starting pitchers and the unrealistic assumption that the guys we had in the bullpen were enough to get the job done . But we still have a core of young , talented players to build around.
  4. Call me crazy ( actually , I probably am crazy ) , but I would not trade Chavis . I do like , and relate to , his habit of recording at bats in a notebook. His potential is terrific. Like all rookies, he has to make adjustments. How can you cry about our " desolate farm " , then want to trade him ?
  5. There is a new wave of folks who want to revolutionize the way you look at baseball . That is where you get things like UZR and dWAR . The old , traditional stats are not only discarded , they are ridiculed. Your " eye test " is meaningless compared to the " eye test " of Jimmy Schmegge , an unemployed, recent college grad who makes a few bucks by staying up all night and ( allegedly ) watching every pitch of every game . Jimmy couldn't judge a fly ball if it was headed for his face .
  6. Little Yaz hit a walk off homer to beat the Mets today .
  7. Agree . There are little flaws in stats and almost everything in life . That doesn't discount the value very much . Most RBIs are just that . A player who consistently gets a lot of them is doing a good job.
  8. The Sox score 17 runs yesterday and get one hit today . It's the kind of thing that would have old Pythagoras scratching his head up in the Elysium Fields or wherever he is . But give the O's kid credit . He pitched the game of his life . Nothing you can do .
  9. I think he will be able to go all out for an inning and be overpowering . I guess we will find out soon enough .
  10. Centerfielders are good defenders . It goes with the territory. The Sox have one of the best . No need to look any deeper into it . No need to rank them .
  11. His fastball and curve both move a lot . There will always be some walks . But if you look at his career opponents batting average , on base percentage and career WHIP , it indicates that he really doesn't have as many base runners as you may think .
  12. Hard to say . I think Kelly would have done better than that . I think he has been improving recently . He still has a great arm . To me , the bottom line is this : We won three straight A.L. East titles . We lost Kimbrel and Kelly . D.D. needed to do something about the pen . D.D. did nothing The bullpen is a mess. We are now scrambling for a wild card spot . Making Eovaldi the closer is the first , positive move to fix things . Let's hope it works .
  13. Bo Derek was the Mookie Betts of pulchritude
  14. Note to Eck and Price and everyone else : For the love of God , let it go . It's not that important.
  15. You have to get a copy of the " Stork to English dictionary. ".
  16. I would bet the farm , if I had a farm , that the Sox would be in much better shape today if they still had Kimbrel and Kelly . As I said before , our current saves leader , with a grand total of seven saves , is now pitching for Pawtucket . That is absolutely terrible . I think Kimbrel already has that many in three weeks with the Cubs .
  17. Kimmi , Personally , I think a really good closer is more valuable and harder to find than a 4.00 plus ERA , win one / lose one , number five type starter . And that's basically what Eovaldi has been in his career . The contract is signed , sealed and delivered . Nothing can be done about it now . It probably was ill advised to give a contract like that to a guy with his history .
  18. How many relievers ?
  19. Thanks . I like your posts as well .
  20. Any criticism , even mild criticism , by Eckersley gets especially noticed because O ' Brien is the biggest homerboy , ass kisser in the business . The players are not used to it .
  21. Saying that Mariano Rivera is the greatest reliever of all time is almost in the no brainer category . You cannot make a good argument otherwise . However , no closer , no matter how good , could be called the greatest pitcher of all time . It doesn't go with the territory . Like in football , a defensive back, no matter how good , could ever be considered the greatest player of all time . It just doesn't work that way .
  22. Yup . That's fair enough. Many people ignore us old school folks too .
  23. That's the trouble with the analytics people . They think everyone is , or should be , into all of that . Many fans simply are not . Out in the bleachers , they know the batting averages , home runs , etc . They are not interested in the wOBA , xUZR and that kind of stuff. Baseball does not have to be complicated to be enjoyable .
  24. Bell , I still look in the paper to see the top 10 in batting average , homers , RBIs ,etc . I can't change . What can you do ? I'm set in my ways .
