  1. I think the motivation of a team like the Royals in trading Duffy is to save money while acquiring young , cheap , controllable prospects . Taking on Nunez and Pearce would make no sense for them . They might eat some of Duffy's contract if the return was sufficient.
  2. Slamming other announcers is almost obligatory for Sox fans . I find it kind of funny because I get the MLB package , and I hear a lot of them . I would honestly say that , to me , Dave O'Brien is one of the worst .
  3. Your parents must have loved taking you to the toy store.
  4. The N.L. has done a much better job of maintaining a competitive balance . The A.L. having a number of teams 25 - 30 games behind at the All Star break is terrible . I don't know what the figures are , but I would guess that N.L. attendance is better than A.L. attendance . No wonder .
  5. Okay , Jung . I'll put you down as not buying it .
  6. I don't know if many are aware of it , but if tonight's All Star game goes into extra innings, the inning will start with a runner on second base . Another of Manfred's gimmicks.
  7. I would not be shocked if we found that quite a few players are presently juicing . Maybe in a way that keeps them one step ahead of the testers .
  8. That would be the planet Earth . His salary is what it is . Nothing you can do about it now . Try to get the best use you can from him for the rest of the season . We need a closer . He seems like a guy who could do it . It should be easier to pick up a number five starter than a good closer .
  9. Gimmicks are seldom the answer . The juiced ball , the many home runs are not bringing in fans . Attendance is down in many cities. Manfred seems unable or unwilling to implement any meaningful solutions. To me , something has to be done about the teams who are tanking . Bad business. Bad for the game . And I would give the umpire the authority to keep the game moving at a good pace . Forget the gimmicks. Forget the juiced ball . Put a good, competitive , fast moving product on the field.
  10. I think Eovaldi is the best choice for the closer's job . Nothing is guaranteed, but he looks like the best bet . Maybe he will be able to return to the rotation at some point. However , when you look at his career record as a starter , it does not seem to warrant the contract he received. People went a little overboard after his World Series performance.
  11. It was always kind of hypocritical, or at least naive , to think other teams were using steroids while the Sox were squeaky clean. Usage was very wide spread. I don't mind giving a pass to Chavis , who does seem like a good kid , for a youthful mistake . Just don't let it happen again. Wright is another story. If you are a lowlife, being able to get hitters out with your knuckleball does not make you less of a lowlife. I do not like to see him pitching for the Red Sox .
  12. That would play into it, yes .
  13. I think I can fairly say that old Pythagaras knew a lot more about geometry than about baseball.
  14. One of the reasons I was concerned about the bullpen right from the get go was the way the game is played today . Starters just don't go deep in games very often . Much is left up to the bullpen. We just saw Price , who was pitching well , removed after five innings. Same has happened with Sale . Maybe that will change . Maybe it won't.
  15. I'm not so keen on the idea of Eovaldi being the fifth starter . I prefer putting him in the closer's role . In his eight year career as a starter he has posted a rather unimpressive record of 44 - 53 , with an ERA of 4.21 . Those kind of starters are not hard to find . Most of his recent renown has come from his work out of the bullpen in last year's post season. That may be his calling. A high velocity, power arm straight from Central casting. The prototypical closer . Besides , it should be easier and cheaper to find a fifth starter type than it would be to find a closer who would be as good or better than Eovaldi. Not even to mention that fewer innings pitched would be beneficial to his somewhat precarious health . My vote : Eovaldi as the new closer . It could help organize and improve the entire bullpen. It surely is better than hoping that guys like Hembree and Wright are the answer .
  16. The Sox do the same thing . I think a lot of teams do . Pretty sure the managers are being " strongly advised " to do this by the front offices . Apparently analytics have shown it benefits the players .
  17. That is because the N.L. is actually competitive . The A.L. has way too much garbage . Too many teams that don't even want to win .
  18. Honestly , it is hard for me to generate much enthusiasm for these kind of games . The Tigers are just plain awful . What has happened to the A.L. ? Top heavy with a handful of good teams . And over loaded with too much tanking trash at the bottom . A pennant race in reverse . Who can lose the most games ? Place your bets . The Tigers can't even win at home .
  19. What we have here is a reluctance by people in admitting that they were wrong . And that is understandable. Human nature . I , and others , were concerned about the bullpen from the start . With good reason . There were others who said the pen would be fine . No problem. Now , they are going to lengths to try and point out that the pen really has not been the problem . Blaming the starters . Now , I will not defend the starters , who definitely have disappointed for the most part . But the bullpen has been every bit as bad as we feared they would be . Those who said the pen would be fine were wrong , wrong , wrong . It is not necessary to admit it . But you were wrong . It was not and is not fine.
  20. Today , many of the top NBA stars become celebrities. Like most celebrities, they tend to gravitate towards New York and L.A . The glamor towns .
  21. Porcello is to Tyler as JBJ is to Moonslav. Love conquers all .
  22. Who cares about some ancient Greek jabroni. Pythagaras wouldn't know a slider from a right angle if it hit him in the ribs . One thing is clear . The Detroit Tigers are one sorry excuse for a major league team . An embarrassment.
  23. Absolutely. But could the Yankees top that ?
  24. To get a Boyd or Wheeler we would have to make a better offer than the other teams who are looking for pitching. That may be difficult. I definitely would not trade Chavis.
  25. Not in that situation. The run was meaningless . It was the ninth inning. They needed a five run rally . Making an out there hurt their chances .
