  1. I don't think there is any thought of being sellers at this point . Given the sorry state of the A.L. , it doesn't take much to get one of the wild card spots . For example , this week we have six games against the woeful Blue Jays and the pitiful Tigers . Another chance to gain at least a couple , if not more , games in the standings before the All Star break .
  2. The Yankees , with their large payroll, have won 27 World Series. The Red Sox , with their large payroll, have dominated in recent years . How often does a low budget team win the World Series ? Like it or not , money talks .
  3. I am still not sure how much a player's first half performance is weighed against another player's career record . The whole thing is complicated by the rule that every team must have at least one representative. In anything of this nature , there will be many who are not happy with the results. Certainly, Devers and Bogaerts are very deserving.
  4. Harper and Machado are terrific baseball players . Are they overpaid ? Absolutely. As are many other athletes, entertainers and people in every walk of life . And many hard working people are underpaid. That is how it is , like it or not . But too many fans are worried about saving the owners money . Why ? Will they lower the price of tickets , beer and hot dogs ? Of course not . The best players are expensive. If you want a championship team, it can be expensive. Of course there are exceptions, but the best teams usually are the high payroll teams . If you want to keep a Mookie Betts , you have to pay him . If you don't want to pay him , don't complain when his replacement is not nearly as good.
  5. Cora saying " we can win the World Series " is not a big deal . What else is he supposed to say?
  6. Harm , Any word from FiveThirtyEight on the Mariners chances of staying out of the A.L. West cellar ?
  7. What I don't care for is the " committee " approach. I think a bullpen functions better when they all have their roles and can prepare themselves accordingly. Of course that starts with having a reliable closer.
  8. I can see using them with a big lead , but get them out of there sooner when they start to implode . Obviously , you can't use your best guys every day .
  9. Is it the way Cora manages the pen , or is it that these guys are just not very good ?
  10. Yeah . You don't have to convince me . I liked Dombrowski , but I have been unhappy with his inactivity since they got off the duck boats .
  11. Yeah . Especially with so many really terrible teams in the A.L.
  12. Most of this is just second guessing . Previously , people wanted Brewer dfa'd . They praised Walden . Sometimes you just can't win . If the relievers screw up , the manager always looks bad . The fact is , there is no one in the pen that you can really count on .
  13. One thing I notice about Boone . He never learns . With a big lead , he will try to get by using some jabroni out of the pen . Then leave him in until things get tight and he starts to get nervous . Guys like Holder and Adams should be on a very short leash .
  14. A lot can happen in three months . Injuries , acquisitions , streaks , etc . When the Sox get back home they have six games against two of the worst teams in MLB , Toronto and Detroit . The dregs of the league . A chance to pick up a little ground before the break . Way too early to give up .
  15. Willie Mays is a Hall of Famer . One of the greatest to ever play the game . It's not fair to use him as a yardstick.
  16. With three full months left to play , the season is certainly not over . That sounds like a carry over from the usual game thread hysteria .
  17. People are making things more complicated than need be. I am a believer in " Occam' s Razor . " If old Occam were alive today , he would say ," I T B S" , " It's the bullpen stupid. "
  18. Tanaka went deeper in the game .
  19. Bell , I am normally optimistic. Lately , I have gotten a little too cynical as the season is going the way I was afraid it would . But at least they battled today . Made it interesting if nothing else .
  20. At least they forced the Yankees to use their top relievers . That might help tomorrow .
  21. Tanaka has been known to give up a few " Porcellos " himself .
  22. Halfway through the season Chris Sale is 3 - 7 with a 3.82 ERA . After all the spin and speculation, that is the bottom line . We need and expect much better from him in the second half .
  23. John Henry was wrong to agree to this . The fair thing would be for each team to be the home team for one game . Anyway , the whole thing seems strange to me . Almost like the games don't count . Like exhibition games . Let's see which team adapts better to the situation .
  24. The Mets announcers , arguably one of the best if not the best crew in the business, were talking about how tough it is for them to judge long fly balls , what with the way the ball is carrying this year .
