I do not agree with the idea that the bullpen is the area where you look to economize . The pen has never been more important than it is in baseball today . The pen is a factor in just about every close game . The argument you hear is that relievers can be inconsistent . That may be true , but starters can be inconsistent as well . But whether it is starters or relievers , the better , more consistent ones usually cost more money. When you plan your budget , you should not look to shortchange the bullpen . It is too vital an area .
