  1. Almost every starting pitcher goes out there with the goal of winning. It's the competitive nature of the game. All pitchers realize this. Of course, there are nuances and flaws in any system. The won-loss record needs to be looked at in conjunction with ERA and other stats, but to say it is meaningless is what I would call analytic snobbery.
  2. The Braves have been every bit as disappointing so far this season as have the Red Sox.
  3. Sure. It always has been for starting pitchers. It is only fairly recently that the popularity of analytics has caused people to discount wins.
  4. A manager makes in game decisions according to his feel for the situation. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. I have seen many instances where the manager has stuck with a struggling pitcher in an effort to make him eligible for the win.
  5. That's good. It will save them the trouble.
  6. I guess that I am not explaining myself very well. I am not making an evaluation of pitching talent. I am simply stating that we all need to deal with the bottom-line reality. You can't ignore that and focus on all the peripherals. Like the old "can't see the forest for the trees" thing. Of course, team wins and losses are what is important. And the pitching staff is an important part of the team. You can like it or not like it, but Crochet is 4-4. A very hard luck 4-4 no question. I think it is fair to say that we were all expecting better. But 4-4 is what it is. You can't text fangraphs and get it changed, That's all.
  7. You are replying to my post that stated that Crochet is a good pitcher who deserves to have a better record. You say that you don't accept that he is mediocre. I didn't say he was mediocre. You are just trying to be argumentative. I am wasting my time.
  8. Crochet is a good pitcher. The fact that he is 4-4 is mostly the fault of his teammates. Looking at all his stats, it is clear that he deserves to have a better record. But the reality is that his record is 4-4. You can't change that to 7-1 no matter how much you would like to. You have to accept the reality of it.
  9. I do think the Sox have enough talent to make the playoffs. But so far they have not been proving it.
  10. Some folks like to overanalyze everything. That is their prerogative. I don't begrudge it. But reality is reality. If I say a pitcher is 4-6 on the season, they will scoff and say the wins and losses are meaningless. They will cite things like xfip. But they are missing the point. The wins and losses are not meaningless. They are already in the books. Reality. The xfip may help to explain things and may help in projections for future success, but it doesn't change what already happened. What happened is not meaningless. It is real. That is just one example. It's like that with everything.
  11. I don't decide what is reality. Reality is reality. The Sox are. 27-31. Reality. Devers has 50 rbis .Reality. I don't decide these things.
  12. You have to give the nerds credit. They are smart. They will find a way to make good money off of things like sports even if they can't play.
  13. There are people who have trouble accepting the plain truth. They want to spin everything, look for alternatives, extenuating circumstances , excuses, changes and break everything down into parts. Over and over, blah, blah, this and that. Everything but accepting the reality . The bottom line.
  14. Sox catch a break in that they won't see old friend Chris Sale in this series.
  15. Winning the division should always be the goal. If you have a team that is good enough to win the division, you have a shot at winning the brass ring. But the playoffs are a crapshoot. Now more than ever.
  16. We should all try to be happy. It's just a baseball game. And life is short. The players are happy. They always say " we are just going to go out on the field and have fun". The owners are happy. They get richer by the day. It's only the fans who develop ulcers. Why ?
  17. Sox management is looking kind of uncertain and indecisive. I though they were over that , but maybe not.
  18. Another rip off of the folks who paid the subscription for MLB Extra Innings. The Lords of Baseball thank you . And as a reward, they offer you a nice deal on the latest " City Connect" gimmick merchandise.
  19. Since winning it all in 2018, the Sox have basically been a .500 team, with a few bright spots , a few lows and a lot of mediocrity. It's not all Cora's fault, but some of it has to be. This is now year seven. At what point do you think a change is needed ?
  20. People forget that baseball is a competition between two teams of major league ballplayers. They put everything on the Sox' player as if the opponent was irrelevant. Examples: Christian Yelich hits a walk off homer off of Hendriks. All you hear is " Hendriks is a bum. What a waste ". No mention that Yelich, when right, is a very good ballplayer.. Or, Jhoan Duran strikes out Devers to close out the game for the Twins. You hear, " Devers cannot hit in the clutch". No mention that Duran is throwing 102 with movement. There are many more examples like this.
  21. It is far too early to give up on this team. I think Breslow is a pretty good judge of baseball talent, and this team does have talent. They do need a nice little winning streak to generate some confidence in themselves and confidence in the disgruntled fan base. And with three wild cards, it doesn't take all that much to get back in the race. Then the mood will swing back again. The gloom and doom will become seashells and balloons.
  22. Closing games is a stressful occupation. Devin Williams appears to be burnt out , at least for now. His confidence is missing in action. The Yankees should not use him in that situation. There are other options when Weaver is not available. You are welcome.
  23. Anthony seems like the real deal. Of course, he might struggle when promoted, but the team needs to find out. They have been treading water for too long. He could provide the needed spark.
