  1. Crochet might be one of those snake bit, hard luck guys. Not to re-open the importance or lack of importance of wins, but while he has excellent stuff, he is 4-4 this year and 13-23 for his career. Hopefully this will change before he gets injured again.
  2. I always thought that Dombrowski was happy with Cora as manager. Didn't seem like there were any problems .
  3. Okay. Thanks. With all that, I still don't see how one guy gets a 1.8, while another only gets a 1.6. After computing all those factors, they decide that one guy is slightly more valuable in terms of winning ballgames ? Does defense have equal weight with offense ? Is there any subjectivity involved ? Personal opinions ? Bias ? And studying every play of every game seems like an enormous task even with the available technology. One more thing. They have WAR ratings for players who retired many years before WAR was invented. In most cases, there is little or no film footage available. What do they go by ? Reputation ? Traditional ( baseball card ) statistics ? Or what ? I am sorry for being a contrarian on this, but I just do not accept WAR as being the definitive evaluation of a player. It may be convenient to look at and cite, but that is all.
  4. I just don't understand why people put so much faith in a small numerical rating, with a decimal, for a player when they don't even know who is calculating it or how it is done. What do they put into the blender that makes it spit out a 1.7 WAR for one guy and a 1.4 WAR for another guy? And how does Rafaela have a higher WAR than Duran when any fan knows that Duran is more valuable? (There are many other examples) I read that they value defense highly and actually watch every play of every game and factor in everything they can think of to evaluate defense. Can this be true? It seems insane. Maybe I will come up with my own simplified system. gWAR. A rating of 1 through 10 with no decimal point. Maybe I can convince MLB to subsidize it by convincing them that it can be used as a tool to control player salaries.
  5. The answer is yes according to who and what ? I wrote that I heard this analyst/ analysts ( not at all geeks) actually watches every pitch of every game to arrive at his conclusion of WAR. Notin got upset and said that is not how it is done at all. How do they do it ? I am thoroughly confused. How does one player get 1.8, while another only gets 1.5 ? All I know is that I would take Roman Anthony ahead of Cedanne Rafaela in the Sox lineup.
  6. Max is always citing the WAR figure. He said Rafaela is a 1.8. When I asked him where that number came from, he disappeared. I admit that I have no idea what 1.8 means, other than I guess it means it's better than 1.6. I do know this much: Anthony is hitting .321, with an OPS of .971 in AAA. Rafaela is hitting .220, with an OPS barely above .600 with Boston.
  7. The question is, is Rafaela's defense enough to offset his relatively light hitting? Roman Anthony is looking like a special talent. A very possible star. He needs to be in the Sox outfield ASAP. There is no reason to wait any longer.
  8. I am not feeling like a victim. I just said what I think. And I think you like to present yourself as an authority on baseball. And what I said was true. I never even heard of at least half the players today. I know you love to get into debates , but I am not interested. Have a nice evening.
  9. I clearly stated that I have no idea how they calculate WAR. I clearly remember reading that the " metrics analysts " study every pitch of every game. Haven't you ever seen that ? I do like baseball. I liked playing it and I enjoy watching it. But I could never hope to match your extensive knowledge of the game. I am satisfied with a cold beer, hot dog , peanuts and traditional stats. I have zero interest in OAA, DRS, xwoba+ , fWAR, bWAR, dWAR, what percentile some guys spin rate may be and all the rest of it. And I have never heard of or know anything about at least half of the players in MLB today. So it is useless for you to debate me on these things. You are a charter member of the board of experts on here. I am not worthy.
  10. How do they calculate a WAR of 1.8 ? I have no idea. Do you know ? I heard that the geeks scrutinize every pitch of every game. Can that be true ? It sounds kind of insane. And did Rafaela's WAR drop a percentage point with his error and 0-4 today ? I guess baseball has passed me by , but I would still promote Anthony and use Rafaela as a sub.
  11. In a move that is so obvious that it is almost in the " no brainer " category, you put Anthony in left, move Duran to center and use Rafaela as a substitute or platoon outfielder , infielder and defensive replacement.
  12. That's on the owner and the G.M. They thought they had all this great young talent. They were mistaken.
  13. Sports psychology is as important as any stat. Right now the Orioles are losers. They look beaten and demoralized. The manager has been iced. The G.M. is in hiding. You can spot them three runs, nothing changes. They know they will find a way to lose. It is hard to succeed without having confidence in yourself. The Orioles have zero confidence. And this is the team that " experts" projected to be contenders for years to come.
  14. The Yankees are playing good ball. Starting to open up a lead in the A.L. East.
  15. Liam Hendriks says that he and his wife are now getting death threats. It's sick out there folks.
  16. Being a closer is a stressful occupation with a high burn-out rate. I think it definitely got to Clay Holmes. But he has good stuff and has reinvented himself as a starter. However, I do like the Sox chances of getting to him early in this game.
  17. Signing Yoshida was a mistake. There is nothing you can do about it now. But he is a pretty good hitter and they should be getting more use out of him than they are. As it is, he is just wasting away in I.L.ville.
  18. Bullpens are no more or less volatile than any other aspect of the ball club. They all have their ups, downs, ins and outs over the course of the season. It's just that the late inning losses sting a little more. The Sox bullpen is pretty well put together, And Chapman is 15th all time in saves, but that doesn't mean they will always succeed. The same thing with starting pitchers, hitters or fielders. The mood swings of some fans says more about their nervous nature than it does about the ebbs and flows of a 162 game season. Don't turn off your TV and hide under the bed. Relax and enjoy the game. The sun will come up tomorrow .
  19. Phillies' hard throwing closer, Jose Alvarado busted for steroids. 80 game suspension plus ineligible for post season play. Alvarado says that he must have taken them inadvertently, thinking it was a weight loss drug. Lol.
  20. A pitching win is a team win. You can't have a team win without a pitching win. Look at last night. Crochet and Sale went head to head. Crochet pitched very well, but Sale outdueled him and got the win. Braves won, Sox lost. Maybe sometimes the wrong pitcher gets credit for it, but that doesn't change the standings. And a save is simply the closer " saving " the win for another pitcher. It is very critical for a team's success. In the end, you either win or you lose. That is what matters.
  21. With the current format , the game thread can be mistaken for just another opinion thread.
  22. The fans who are into advanced metrics ,WAR , Baseball savant, etc. are doing what they love. The traditional baseball card stats are not enough for them. They need more and more stats, data and analysis. Nothing is ever enough. And that's okay. No problem. I just don't want to see baseball as that complicated. And I cannot agree with the downplaying of a pitcher's wins, losses and saves since winning or losing is actually the whole reason for playing the game.
