  1. The Sox didn't sign Devers with the intention of trading him to cut payroll. That makes no sense. Actually, the big contract made it harder to trade him and lowered the return. It was Devers attitude, lack of hustle and lack of cooperation that caused the trade.
  2. Manny Ramirez was a great hitter. But other than hitting, I would not be taking anything else he says very seriously. In fact, he is one of the last ones I would listen to.
  3. Basically, Cora is the players' immediate supervisor. His interaction with them is, and should be, different from that of Breslow.
  4. Folks are trying to build the narrative that the Sale trade was a good deal that somehow just didn't work out. That is not how I see it, or how I saw it at the time. It was a very bad trade from the get-go. You don't trade a Hall of Fame caliber pitcher, who is just getting healthy again, for some jabroni utility infielder. Then throw in 17 million to boot. Not a good idea. And the results should not be all that surprising.
  5. Anyway, " Human Element " sounds kind of abstract. And, quite frankly, a little soft. This is a baseball team. Where is the human element when you DFA a guy? Or when you fire the manager? It is strictly business. And John Henry is hardly the epitome of human element, himself. He is as "cold fish" as it gets. I think Breslow is on the right track and the team will be better off for it.
  6. On September 30th, they will be preparing for the playoffs. Just my opinion, but I'm usually right.
  7. Yes. That is a really significant sample size. The Sox have floundered for several years with Devers as the featured performer.
  8. When you get a new Sheriff in town, some of the folks who had become comfortable in their positions do not like it. Too bad. As I recall, it was like that with Dombrowski as well. To me, the Sox are now finally getting back on track after the dumb move of firing Dombrowski. Breslow will do things his way, as he should. The hangers - on in the front office just need to do their jobs. As for Devers, thanks for the memories and good luck with the Giants. The team will be just fine without you.
  9. Can't compare Devers to Betts. Not only is Mookie a far better player than Devers, but he is a far better teammate and employee. And he is a winner. Trading Devers was not strictly a salary dump. He was becoming a no-hustle malcontent. And you don't need that, especially around the younger guys.
  10. Okay. I think I understand. It is confusing. " Wins above replacement ".
  11. But isn't WAR supposed to measure his value against a replacement D.H. ? Defense and base running should not be big factors. D.H. is a different kind of job. Not to be compared to a " complete player".
  12. Bregman has certainly met and probably exceeded expectations. There is no conceivable reason to trade him now. The same thing applies to Chapman. I guess some fans just love the idea of being " sellers ".
  13. I don't see any good reason why the Sox won't, at the very least, make the playoffs this year. Look around the American League. Who are the playoff teams?
  14. Why does WAR diminish the value of a DH? It is a legitimate position. Defense is not a part of it. Why wouldn't a David Ortiz be worth as many " wins above replacement " level jabronis than any other position on the field would?
  15. The Sox have not done very well with Devers as the star of the show. Let's see how they do without him. Personally, I think they will be better. I also think that Breslow is a huge improvement over Bloom. I think this team is moving in the right direction. Time will tell.
  16. Devers definitely could hit. No doubt about that. He refused a request from management to change positions, then became upset when the rookie volunteered. He showed a lack of hustle on the field. He declined to participate in off the field activities. He ignored the outreach from a Sox icon and Hall of Famer. He displayed a bad and selfish attitude in general , despite being the longest tenured player and a very highly paid one at that. But he sure could hit.
  17. Devers was clearly the best hitter on the team. The leader in several offensive categories. And yet, I didn't hear even one of his teammates lamenting his departure. That is kind of strange.
  18. Breslow is aggressive. Mistakes will be made. The Sale trade was a blunder. There is no getting around that. But Breslow has made some very good moves as well. The team is shaping up nicely.
  19. What is the over/under on when the Yankees may be able to score a run or two?
  20. We don't know the whole story, but it seems to me that the Sox players are not nearly as upset at the trade as you might think they would be. Certainly not as upset as many of the fans. And they know the situation better than we do. And I think Breslow knows what he wants and is decisive enough to do what it takes. And I don't think he wanted Devers attitude problem around the young guys and getting in the way of the team he wants to build. We will see how the team does going forward . My guess is that they are going to do very well without Devers.
  21. He was the last remaining member of that great 2018 team. They are all gone now.
  22. One thing for sure; as is customary with all former Red Sox players, we will now enter the Rafael Devers box score watch. Folks will be checking every night to see how Devers did. Then, they will report the results , be they good or bad, to us in an effort to either justify or condemn the trade.
  23. Of course, Hicks is not fair compensation for Devers. That was just for a little salary relief for S.F. However , Hicks could become an asset for the Sox' bullpen.
