We need to take a step back and look at this trade deadline based on last off season.
1. We did have a chance to add a big bat. Bat with some power. But we passed. The decision was made early on that we would reset the luxury tax limit in 2017. We would be under the cap by $10-$15M and use it for addition at the trade deadline.
2. I'm not sure how hard we went after Todd Frazier. Obviously the Yankees put out a better offer. Maybe DD was never in on that possibility.
3. This was going to be a transition year at both 1B and 3B. Unfortunately Moreland is playing like a $5M rental.
4. Although we expected some regression but much of our core players have under performed, starting with Betts. I never see 'weakness' from JBJ even when he's struggling but Xander is another story. He looks timid when things aren't going his way. I thought Beni would have a break out season. He's just an average left fielder with no power. His defensive skills are overrated.
5. I did not expect much offensively from our catching duo but I'd thought they hit little better than they have been.
6. Hanley in an enigma. I'm counting the days for his contract to expire. Two more years. Not even Ortiz got $20M just to DH.
7. I'm not sure all the panic over impending 'cliff'. Most of these players are replaceable.
8. Chris Sale looks unbeatable. See where we are in two years.
We have $200M available annually to put out a quality team. There are 25 clubs that would like to swap places with us.
My point is that Devers is not a Savior for this franchise this year. It's more imperative that Betts, Xander, Moreland, Hanley and Beni play at a higher level, offensively.
1 He is going to bat 7th, 8th or 9th
2 My expectation is not high. Just higher than that of Holt, Marrero and Lin's. I dislike Holt as a baseball player. Mediocre defender at best at every position. BFF with John Farrell is all see. I dislike him even more because Lin was sent down.
3 Don't fall in love with young talent on this team. They are all replaceable. Especially before I hand out $20M+ multiple year contracts.
4 Must have strong starting rotation.
5 Bullpen for most part should be built from within. Tons of failed starting arms in the organization available for bullpen duty.
OPS rankings by positions
JBJr 1st
Dustin 6th
Hanley 6th
Betts 7th
Xander 7th (still think he's worth $20-$25M?)
Beni 7th
Moreland 11th
Catchers 12th (near the bottom, many teams use 2)
3B Dead last probably
AND YOU THINK DEVERS IS GOING TO HURT US? (PS...we don't have $95M invested him....he can always be sent down)
What hell is wrong with people? Okay, it's 0-2 in bottom of second. Looks like we'll be shut out. I'm going to bed.
Devers is NOT in the lineup. Devers is NOT in the lineup. And we're going to somehow dismiss him? Again, what do we have to lose? Brock Holt? Are you freaking kidding me? He's one play away from going on DL again.
Hell Devers can go hitless and he'd still be an upgrade as far as I'm concerned. Give the kid a chance.
Our problem won't be Devers. He will give us at least what we've been getting. Problem is our regulars who have under performed this year. Thank God for Sale and Kimbrel.
PANIC MOVE WOULD HAVE BEEN TO TRADE AWAY THE FARM TO GET A MEDIOCRE RENTAL.....THAT'S PANIC.
Nope.....How long are you going to give credit to Theo?
It's DD's team. Ben would not have signed Kimbrel and Price. THEY PUT THE TEAM OVER THE TOP. Otherwise we would have been in last place last year.
DD inherited the worst signing in baseball history, Pablo Sandoval.
And no way in hell Ben would have traded away Moncada and Kopech.
Do you want to see this team without Price, Sale, Pomeranz and Kimbrel?
Is your goal for this team to just to hang out on the edges?
With Jacoby Ellsbury looking like an expendable part on the Yankees roster, ESPN’s Buster Olney (subscription required) looks at some of the potential large contracts New York could take on as a way of facilitating a trade for the outfielder, who is owed roughly $75MM between now and the end of the 2020 season. Olney’s names (all speculative) range from other unfavorable contracts like Jordan Zimmermann to more valuable assets like Giancarlo Stanton, though obviously much more than just Ellsbury would need to be included in a Stanton trade. Ellsbury has full control over his future via a no-trade clause, though Olney wonders if the outfielder would accept a deal to a team that could offer more playing time if Ellsbury becomes the odd man out in the Yankee outfield.
One of the best move Sox ever made.....passing on Ellsbury. (for the money he was demanding)
This is a case where most of the fans were right. Finally the FO saw it our way. What do we have to lose?
I've been okay with trades so far. But I also realize that our farm needs restocking right now. Not prudent to trade away more prospects for a rental.
We've been scouring entire planet for Pablo's replacement. Meanwhile, our #1 prospect, yes our #1 prospect who by the way just happens to play 3B, sits waiting. Nothing more to prove in the minors.
We get too hung up chronological age. This kid was signed as a 16 year old. He's been groomed to be a major league ball player. He was not some spoiled teenager that lived in a comfortable suburb playing travel baseball as a 16 year old.
This team needs to wake up. Specifically those we counted on.....I don't care what the WAR stats say. Betts has been sub par offensively. Xander is turning out to be a run of mill singles hitting shortstop. (And you want to give him $25M contract). He is at best a mediocre defensive SS. Beni? He was a better player last September. We think he's a superior defensive left fielder. Well he's not. He's living off other two thirds of Sox OF. At the least I thought he's a smart kid. Well he's not that either. He makes bone head running mistakes as much as Hanley and others. Moreland has become the hitter everyone thought he'd be.....don't get me wrong I think he's still a bargain at $5M. But his career line screams 'mediocre'.
And what's with Farrell's fascination with Holt? I'd take more athletic Lin. As Moon said, Holt should have been traded when he had some value. What would any team give up for him now?
There's a reason the TV ratings are down. Who wants to watch paint dry for 3 1/2 hours?
You can't fall in love with these guys and make stupid financial decisions. I would spend $20M elsewhere. He's nothing more than a singles hitter with limited defensive ability. Move him to 3rd? He doesn't hit well enough to be a 3B.
"We're in need here and we think he's ready," Dombrowski said. "We've talked at length. I've talked with John and the coaching staff. They're aware of, he's going to need continued development at the big league level. They're prepared to do it. He's in great hands with this staff. He has made some errors, but he's also made some good plays."
For all the naysayers on this board, read the first line.
"We're in need here....."....If he fails, so what? He's 20 years old. Think he'll quit and retire and go do something else? They are NOT like you and I. They are professional athletes. They face challenge every day. There's a guy on other side trying to make you do your job poorly.
First of all, Sox has been one of top five spenders over the years. Budget for DD did not suddenly increase. Let's not paint the picture that we're all of sudden overspending.
On the heels of two last places (yeah, DD finished up the year on that second one), he came in with a mandate from Sox ownership.
We won the Division last year and we are currently in 1st place. It's a bottom line game. Simple as that.
Let me know when we get to that impending cliff.
Beni, Moreland, Travis, Swihart and couple of others prospects not named Devers and Groome for Votto.
Call up Brentz and Devers.
Now you have some power. Screw the cap. (Betts, Xander, Stanton, Votto, Dustin, Hanley, Devers, Bryce and Catcher.)
Your are 100% right. WTF?
Hitting a double and driving in a run does not excuse for STUPID, CARELESS base running. It will catch up to us. DAMN IT guys. It's not OK.
I'm good with our starting five all getting an extra day's rest. Our success is tied to our starters.
I'd hate to think where we'd be without Chris Sale.
Best thing DD has done in his tenure.
Managing day to day, looking at every data available, JF has to know who is hot and cold.
It should be all about the team. You are a paid professional. I don't care if I hurt your feelings. You hit .120 over 3 series, then you shouldn't expect to bat clean up. (Hard luck outs obviously are considered.)
There's a big difference between unlucky streak and a slump (usually chasing balls out of strike zone contributing to K's and weak contacts). If you're in a slump, I don't want you leading off.
Rafael Devers seems unfazed by his promotion to Pawtucket, as he is now 8 for 19 with two home runs after going 1 for 4 with a two-run opposite field home run on Wednesday.
What would it take to get Devers? Groome? Chavis? Houk? Oh wait.....
