  1. Buck doesn't bring in Britton to face the top of the order at the start of the inning? Ok...Let's see where it goes... Buck doesn't bring in Britton when leadoff hitter reaches? WTF is this guy thinking?! Buck doesn't bring in Britton when first 2 guys reach and Encarcion & Bautista are due up next? Fire him before he gets on the bus to the airport.
  2. Ortiz will get significant votes as well. They may end up hurting each other and a Mike Trout will end up with it.
  3. I believe it was a combination of not getting much production at 3rd and wanting to give him a small taste of the big leagues, which they like to do with top young players. It's kind of like how every off season they take about 5 ot 6 prospects and make them live in Boston and go to class every day, where they teach them about handling the "life."
  4. This team seems to really enjoy playing together. Great chemistry can go a long way in this game. They are miles away from the fall of 2012 when Cherington said that the first thing that they needed to do was "Change the make-up of the Clubhouse." Obviously the August trade of Beckett, Gonzalez & Crawford went a long way in doing that.
  5. I agree that it's definitely a possibility that they keep him, I'm just thinking that it's also possible that they decide to go with someone who has lesser stuff, but is much more durable, especially if they feel that they can get some real value in return.
  6. Agreed, but it all depends on the return. They could go with Price-Porcello-E-Rod-Pomeranz-Wright next year, although I wouldn't be surprised if they bring in a veteran who can give you 200 innings, especially with E-Rod & Pomeranz never having done so and the knuckleball being pretty volatile.
  7. There is no question that Buchholz has some value, especially when you consider that everyone is looking for pitching and this free agent class for starting pitching is ugly.
  8. My guess is that they pick up his option and he is traded this winter. The Sox should have plenty of suitors if they choose to move him.
  9. I think that a lot will depend on how the post season goes. My guess is that they'll try to lock up one or more of Betts/Bradley/Bogaerts this offseason. I get the Boras thing, so Betts might be easier, but who knows? Bogaerts & Bradley are both very intelligent kids, so they'll make the final decision. I definitely don't see them spending 100 plus million on anyone this winter, including Encarcion, unless it's extending players who are already here, especially if they win it all.
  10. Sean McAdam made it sound like he had some issues with "listening" and the Steven Wright incident wasn't the first. Where there's smoke, there's usually fire with this stuff, but who knows? I
  11. You mentioned DHing Moncada part time in previous posts as well. I think you're trying to out think yourself. In the 40+ years that the DH has been around, I've never seen a team take a young, athletic, highly touted prospect and DH them, part time or not. Moncada & Swihart are two of the best athletes in the organization. They need to play a position every day, not DH. It'll never happen with either one of them next year. Then there's the whole additional mental aspect of trying to DH, play multiple positions, etc. A team like Boston, that puts a ton of resources in training players for the off the field part of the game, isn't going to impede a top prospect's development because they may need a part time DH, 3rd catcher and 5th outfielder on the roster.
  12. Google "Christian Vasquez part of the problem." It won't cut and paste for some reason. Tony Masserati wrote about it. He gets paid to question everything the Sox do, he's annoying as hell, and it wasn't him who I heard talk about it, but he mentions it as well.
  13. I'm not getting the Holt comparison at all. Swihart is a top young catching prospect and Brock Holt is a utility player. Maybe in 4 years when Swihart is 28, he'll be a utility player, but they aren't going to make him one now. It's not even a remote possibilty. He's 24 years old.
  14. We'll have to disagree here. I've never seen a team take a top prospect and make him a utility player at this stage of their career. He needs to play every day and I'm certain he will somewhere. He'd never get 500 at bats in the scenarios that you mention, unless there are significant injuries to multiple players. Whether or not they view him as the catcher of the future is irrelevant. At this point, he just needs to play so they can have a better idea of what he can be. I'm certain he won't make the MLB roster unless he's the starting catcher.
  15. About a month ago, someone on WEEI was talking about how Vasquez has listening issues and management was not happy with him at all. Pretty sure it was McAdam. One time Vasquez was signaled knuckleball and he went with fastball when Wright was on the mound. The hitter crushed it. Supposedly this type of thing has happened enough times where they were pissed. Who knows, he may still be in the doghouse.
  16. I doubt they trade Swihart coming off an injury, but you never know I guess. They definitely won't turn him into a utility player at this stage of his development. The only way he makes the big league roster coming out of spring training is as the starting catcher, which is obviously unlikely. He'll play every day somewhere. My guess would be the starting catcher in Pawtucket.
  17. I'm not saying they won't re-visit it, I just don't think they are going to be willng to part with the package that it would take to get him at this point. I'm also not sure that Chicago will go in to re-build mode this off-season They have enough of a core where they may try to compete next year.
  18. I agree. I don't see Sale as a realistic possibility at this point for several reasons: The White Sox don't "have" to move him and they will need to be blown away to do so. The Red Sox aren't going to blow up the farm or trade any of the cost-controlled young guys on the MLB roster for Sale. With Porcello & Price settling in, there is no longer a need for that top of the rotation stopper. There has to be concerns about Sale's delivery. The Sox seem to be consistent with the "untouchables," and it's going to take more than one of them to get Sale.
  19. I agree. I'm a big fan of throw a bunch of s*** at the wall and see what sticks when it comes to the bullpen, especially when you already have an established closer. Middle relievers are pretty volatile from year to year. Maybe "one" veteran guy like a Ziegler at 6 or 7 million could work, but not two. Ziegler is obviously going back home, so who knows who that guy could be at this point. My guess is they'll trade for some help in the pen, as the rotation seems pretty set.
  20. I don't think they ever "handed him the job." They basically gave him a look because they weren't getting much production out of the position and the timing was right. I also think that they were sending a not so subtle message to Travis Shaw that went something like this. "You might want to complete one full season as a productive major leaguer before you publicly whine about playing time."
  21. Jackie Robinson says hello 😉
  22. The Red Sox have a development program that is supposedly as elaborate as it gets. Every off-season, they invite some prospects to their "boot camp," where they live in the city & spend a lot of time in the classroom learning about off the field stuff. Mike Hazen said that they didn't want to put too much on Moncada's plate, so they kept him where he was comfortable. I'm pretty sure my 98 year old grandmother also figured out that Moncada might end up at 3rd when you did, but realized that the Sox have done an excellent job of developing position players over the years, so they obviously have their reasons for keeping Moncada at 2nd.
  23. Looking at what relievers are making right now, and what the projections are for reliever salaries will be moving forward, Craig Kimbrel's salary may prove to be an absolute bargain. Let's see what Chapman signs for this off season. I'm pretty sure Kimbrel will no longer be considered a guy who has a "high contract." I'm sure that Dombrowski and company were well aware of this when they made the trade.
  24. I'm not saying I liked the signing at all, I'm just saying that there were other teams willing to pay him what the Sox did & they weren't bidding against themselves as someone suggested. Also, ballplayers are typically entering their prime at 27, so they obviously felt there were legit reasons why he wasn't "trending" the right way.
  25. Sox management didn't just pull that number out of their ass. That wasn't a quick signing. You can say that the signing sucks, but it wasn't a clear overpay. In most cases, teams have a sense of where they need to be. Well, except for the Sox & Jon Lester. Their initial offer was so clueless and ignorant, that I'm certain that it's a big reason why Lucchino is no longer involved with ops at all.
