  1. When the GM publicly states that, "he needed to change the culture of the clubhouse," there's definitely a problem. It's no secret Crawford & Gonzalez didn't want to be here, and Beckett was livid after he was ripped publicly after he decided to play 18 holes with Buchholz the day after he missed a start for "soreness." Beckett made his next start and threw batting practice for about 3 innings before Valentine finally yanked him. It was his "FU" to management. No one can prove anything on this message board, but everything I've heard & read makes me think that it was much worse than most fans realize. My guess is that it will be a pretty big chapter in someone's book at some point. For now, we'all just have to disagree.
  2. I don't think he changed "who he was" as a person. He was always known as an egomaniacal d**k, but that's probably a big part of what made the guy so successful. I just think he got tired of some of the ******** that's part of being a pro athlete, especially in a place like Boston.
  3. Google "Jeff Passan on Josh Beckett." I don't think Beckett "radically changed" at all. It's a good read.
  4. 2007 was a long time away from 2012.
  5. I agree. I don't think it would've been possible to move Crawford without having to eat a ton of money or adding significant prospects to a deal. Beckett less so, but it sounds like they would've eaten his entire remaining deal just to get him out of there. That Dodger trade allowed a for a "re-do" that lead to a World Series Championship. Tough to argue that it's not "at worst" a top 5 trade in Sox history.
  6. When Ben publicly stated, "The first thing we needed to do was change the culture of the clubhouse," you could argue that those 3 guys were the biggest problems. Dodgers trade or not, at least 2 of them would've been gone that off-season.
  7. I think you can throw "WAR" out the window with this trade. The Sox got rid of 3 guys with big contracts who didn't want to be here. The Dodgers did the Sox a huge favor. People always talk about "losing" Agon, but they were supposedly going to try trade him that off-season regardless. The guy didn't want to be here. If it weren't for for Beckett & Crawford, they obviously would've received more talent in return, but getting rid of those guys at a minimal cost was well worth it. Beckett was definitely not coming back, even if it meant releasing him.
  8. While Agon was productive here, the Sox were supposedly going to move him that off-season regardless of the Dodger trade.
  9. Yup...Great "cans," but if I'm Verlander, I'm hiding her electronics for a while. If he supports any of it, I don't want any part of the guy in a Sox uniform. Anything short of his own "Tweet" saying something like "Congratulations on my ex-teammate for deservedly winning the AL Cy Young Award," and he might be a douche.
  10. Hopefully he heals fast and is ready to start the season.
  11. I agree. Unless they trade Kimbrel, I don't see them in the market for Chapman or Jansen. They won't be in on Melancon regardless. There are plenty of guys with lots of upside out there who will cost a lot less. They'll definitely address the pen this winter and probably again next summer. They have some guys who could emerge as good relievers as well.
  12. I don't think the Sox picked up Buchholz' option to trade him for a reliever who just had hip surgery for a torn labrum and won't be ready for the start of next season.
  13. Fair enough. Let's just call it one of those trades that neither team would ever consider then. As good as the soon to be 37 year old (Prior to the mid point of next season) Cruz has been, I'm certain that the Sox value JBJ too much to ever consider such a "deal."
  14. You shouldn't have to duck over what looks to be a well though out trade proposal, but it sounds like the Red Sox were unwilling to part with JBJ in a deal for Chris Sale, so I'm pretty certain they won't consider trading him for a package that's highlighted by an aging right-handed hitting DH, especially when you consider how many "DH" types that are free agents.
  15. Anything is possible, but I don't think they'll move either Swihart or Vasquez this off season. Vasquez IS out of options, so my guess is that he'll back up Leon and Swihart will catch full time in Pawtucket. There's not a lot of catching depth in MLB, so I wouldn't be in any hurry to move any of these guys at this point.
  16. You could be right. Time will tell. Harper will be 26 when he reaches free agency. A team like the Yankees with presumably a lot of money to spend, some young talent to build around and a little league right field porch, might want to make Harper an offer he can't refuse. Harper certainly doesn't seem to be a guy who doesn't enjoy the "bright lights," either.
  17. I agree, but the new TV contracts have a lot of ownership groups printing money. Harper's shoulder injury surely didn't help, but if he's healthy the next two seasons, my guess is that he'Il get a record deal eclipsing 400 million.
  18. I'm not saying that I think it's the "right" move, I'm just saying what I think it would cost to sign him long term at this point. They could always get creative with the numbers and back load it, too. I don't think that the TV contracts will be getting any smaller anytime soon and I definitely think Harper is going to get 40 plus per year.
  19. The idea is to give him significantly more money than he'll get over the next four years in exchange for being able to lock him up long term. If I'm the Sox, I don't want to wait until Harper sets a crazy precedent after 2018.
  20. I think people are just throwing out opinions as to what it would cost to lock Betts up long term. I personally don't think that anything under an AAV of 30 mill gets the conversation started. Bryce Harper is a free agent after 2018 and some people think that he'll get a 4-5 hundred million dollar deal. Would you trade Betts for Harper right now? I sure wouldn't and they were born 9 days apart.
  21. Do you think that he should be some kind of "super sub" on the MLB roster because catching everyday in Pawtucket might hurt his trade value!? My guess is that the player development people are more concerned about seeing what type of player he can be than they are with his current trade value. The kid needs to play everyday somewhere, and as I mentioned before, he will.
  22. Yup. it obviously makes the most sense to have him play everyday in Pawtucket. He missed a lot of time and he's still young enough to develop into a good MLB catcher.
  23. My guess is that Beltran "plan A." I think he makes the most sense as well.
  24. Good point. He may choose to go somewhere that will give him the best opportunity to close. Forfeit some money now for the possibility of a big pay day next winter.
