  1. You won't see Moncada doing any DHing. His most common comps for athleticism are Bo Jackson/Rickey Henderson/Mike Trout. The comps are a stretch, but he's going to be a position player when he gets here. He'll likely play 3rd and maybe some left in winterball. Even if the Red Sox don't go with a traditional DH next year, they aren't going to rotate a bunch of guys in that spot. At worst, it will be a platoon with a guy like Pedroia DHing once a month or so, but you'll never see a kid like Moncada doing any DHing at that age.
  2. No. I would send Vasquez down. He missed an entire season. It wouldn't be the end of the world for him to go down and work on his hitting. I agree that it's possible Leon wouldn't clear waivers, but I wouldn't want to lose Hanigan, either.
  3. At worst, Hanigan provides depth at a position that is more difficult to fill than any other. If there's one thing to take away from what's transpired this season, it's that you can never have "too much" depth.
  4. I remember reading that Andrew Friedman was the Rays GM who pretty much refused to trade within the division. He's with the Dodgers now, but I seriously doubt we'll see a significant trade involving top prospects and top of the rotation starters within the AL East.
  5. I don't ever remember hearing or reading anything indicating Cleveland wanted to trade anyone in their rotation last winter. Anytime one of those young Indian arms was mentioned somewhere, it always came back to Cleveland trying to win this year, which they are obviously doing. A few of their names may have floated around at last year's deadline, but that sounded more like media speculation. I don't think any of those guys were going to be moved, and I'm sure the Sox checked in on them when they were looking for pitching.
  6. Not in a million years.
  7. It sounds like San Diego isn't "looking" to move Myers, but will for the right package. I just don't think he's the type of player I want to move top prospects for, and I agree, the package will be substantial.
  8. Moncada seems to be as untouchable as it gets at this point. I can't see them ever including him in a deal for Myers/Pomeranz. IMO, John Jay makes a lot more sense than Myers, as he is a left hander who compliments Young, and he won't cost nearly what Myers will.
  9. Right now this team has a lot of young talent & seems to have a bright future, so doing something just because Ortiz is retiring is short-sighted at best. It's obvioulsly a seller's market for starting pitching right now, so there will likely be an overpay. It probably makes more sense to try to shorten games with bullpen help. I'm sure the Sox will do something, but it won't be because Ortiz won't be here next year.
  10. Not sure what your point is. David Ortiz helps the Sox offense?
  11. So teams that don't have a DH with an OPS of 1.100 can't win?
  12. Ha! This team probably needs more than a Peavy type unless Rodriguez and or Buchholz figure it out.
  13. At worst, bringing in a guy like Peavy gives a team a huge mental boost & tells the players that they are trying to win now. Peavy was supposedly like having another pitching coach in that dugout, too. He actually gave them a lot of solid innings when Buchholz went down as well. Sometimes that's all you need.
  14. Why would the Red Sox ever want to trade Brock Holt? The return will likely not come close to what he gives them. The guy gives Farrell a ton of flexibility, he can pretty much play anywhere, rarely gives you a bad at bat and he's a great clubhouse guy. He's pretty much the perfect "25th man." They were talking about him about a month ago on one of those talk shows and someone said, "Every team is looking for their own Brock Holt type, but a guy like that isn't easy to develop. He doesn't get nearly enough credit for what he does, but his teammates love him." The only way that I think they would ever consider trading him is if he asks for an opportunity to go somewhere where he'll get a shot to play everyday. Why else would they ever want to dump a guy like that?
  15. Based on everything I've heard & read, Moncada might be closer than you think. Even Schilling said this morning that everyone he talks to says he is "really close." I think that at worst he'll get a September call-up to help get acclamated to the life style. I don't think that anyone within that organization would be surprised if he ends up starting in Boston next season. The kid is a special talent.
  16. If the Sox ever consider packaging Swihart & Devers together, there had better be a top of the rotation starter coming back. Not an expensive left fielder. No thanks. Young has been solid, Holt is coming back and Benintendi isn't too far off. If for some reason Benintendi fails, Moncada could certainly be an option.
  17. Right now, Price and Wright are a solid 1-2, Porcello a solid 3 and pray for rain. I agree that Buchholz might be resurrected from the dead, but E-Rod isn't himself. They need somebody to give them some innings right now.
  18. At this point, I think that the only untouchable guy is Moncada. They have 60 milion invested and he has a chance to be special. It would have to be names like Fernandez & Sale for him to even be considered. I also think that Swihart and Espinosa are close to untouchable as well, but Benintendi could be that centerpiece with Devers and Kopech. I've read enough to think that the Sox are not high enough on Terehen from Atlanta, so not sure what else might be available, but they will do something. My guess is that they will go after bullpen help based on supply & demand.
  19. Vasquez is still very young and he should have a long career as a backup in a worst case scenario, but I don't think Swihart is as available in a trade as many others do. Certainly not for what starting pitchers seem to be available at this point.
  20. And OJ didn't kill his wife and Ron Goldman because he was found innocent in a court of law. There is actually medical evidence that proves Nomar took PEDs without a shred of doubt. Do a little homework before you say "none." Maybe none "that you heard of."
  21. It was the perfect storm at the time. That game against NY when Jeter dove into the stands and Nomar sat alone on the bench while everyone was on the top step of the dugout during that rally didn't help, either. The Sox were obviously aware that he had been taking PEDs excessively, as his body began breaking down. Their contract offer was way out of line with what Jeter & A-Rod were making, but there was no way they were going to invest in him long term. His defense was below average at that point and he had lost a ton of flexibility.
  22. The SI cover gets the publicity, but you didn't have to be a surgeon to realize that most of his injuries following the SI cover were consistent with excessive PED use. Guys who don't use PEDs don't tear muscles right off of the bone.
  23. Gehrig was done after '38. The Yankees won in '39, '41 & '43. Before you come back with the obvious, the point is that guys can be replaced. Who were the "Babe Ruth/ Lou Gehrig" types who played for the Royals/Mets last year?
  24. If it wasn't for his excessive use of PED's, there would be a statue of Nomar next to Fenway right now, but Bogaerts has the talent & character traits to be a star in this league for a long time.
  25. Babe Ruth retired in 1934. In the 10 years following his retirement, the Yankees won 6 World Championships. In other words, as much as Ortiz has done for the Sox, nobody is irreplaceable.
