  1. I'm not saying that the Sox wouldn't trade Holt in a deal for a TOTR starter, I just think that a team that would trade one would be rebuilding and wouldn't insist on Brock Holt. The Sox seem to love the guy and don't seem to have any interest in moving him, certainly not while they are in contention. He's much too valuable. Rutledge & Hernandez can't do what Holt does. Few players can, especially with his terrific attitude. I think that the main reason that the Red Sox went so hard after Price was because there was nothing that interested them who might've been available in trade. Shelby Miller? Definitely not at that price. Who else was available? Nearly all teams feel that they can compete these days. I can see the Sox trying to acquire a starter at some point, I just seriously doubt that Brock Holt's name will be in the discussion.
  2. I don't think the Red Sox would ever turn a young, athletic player like Moncada into a designated hitter. It's almost unheard of. There's also a young first baseman named Sam Travis who figures into the first base mix. Hanley could slot into the regular DH role and Sam Travis could play first. Travis Shaw has locked up 3rd as he is one of those guys who slips under the radar because scouts can't measure heart from a seat in the stands. The guy is such a gamer. Hopefully Sam Travis is too.
  3. Brock Holt is a manager's dream. The guy can play anywhere at anytime without hurting you, he has a great attitude and he produces. Somebody in baseball was saying on WEEI the other day how every team is looking for a Brock Holt type and though you would think that you could turn any utility guy into a player like him, it's not that easy. He has a ton of value for the Sox. I'm not sure why the Red Sox would ever want to trade a player who can play everywhere, produces and does it with a smile. I've never read or heard of him being in a trade rumor. It doesn't make any sense to me why tbey would ever want to get rid of this guy. John Farrell would probably freak if he was traded.
  4. Iglesias has 4 extra base hits in 122 plate appearances this year. 4. That's almost impossible to do. The Sox supposedly got rid of Mark Loretta after 2006 because he only had 38 extra base hits in over 700 plate appearances, because THAT was unexceptable, and he hit .285. They probably figured Pedroia could give them at least that. Nothing against Iglesias, but he won't be in this league long with those numbers.
  5. There's no question that Ortiz will be difficult to replace on AND off the field. The guy is obviously a Boston legend, but the DH spot doesn't have to be a hole. If it's not Ramirez, it's not like they'll acquire a Mario Mendoza or a Jose Iglesias type to DH. They'll definitely bring in someone who can hit.
  6. Good points...A lot could definitely happen, but right now I would guess that Shaw & Travis will be at the corners with Hanley doing the bulk of the DHing in 2017. One scout called Sam Travis the "next Paul Goldschmidt" earlier this year, and while that seems to be a bit of a stretch, he's definitely in the mix for next year. I don't see Ortiz changing his mind & I definitely don't see Sandoval being in the picture, but anything could happen I guess. If Sandoval proves to be healthy next spring, they'll move him & eat the majority of the deal in my opinion. The only way I see someone like Bautista being an option is if they move Sam Travis in a package for a TOTR starter.
  7. I agree. I think that it would be difficult to find ANY team in baseball who wouldn't have picked up that option. He seems like the perfect change of scenery candidate. He's had tough innings this year, but has settled down after. With all of the parity in baseball, there likely won't be much available starting pitching at the deadline. He has value and the Sox will have no shortage of trade partners if they do move him. Other teams are well aware that he has the capability to go on a run where he pitches like an ace. It should be interesting to watch this develop over the next few months.
