  1. The Red Sox and Seattle Mariners likely have backup plans at third base in Marcelo Mayer and Ben Williamson. FanGraphs projects Mayer with 1.8 WAR in 128 games next year and Williamson with 1.8 WAR in 130 games. Their MLB debuts this year, Mayer posted 0.4 fWAR (0.2 bWAR) in 44 games and Williamson 0.4 fWAR (1.3 bWAR) in 85 games. Mayer is two years younger than Williamson.
  2. The Red Sox and Seattle Mariners have similar infield needs with a veteran returning shortstop surrounded by questions marks at the other positions. Tampa Bay could offer solutions with Yandy Diaz and Brandon Lowe, especially if the Rays don't think they can compete in the stacked AL East next season. The issue might be what team could offer the Rays the best prospect package (and whether the Rays would trade within the division). In his offseason plan, an astute 😀 Seattle fan proposed that the Mariners trade from their deep farm system for Diaz, Lowe, Ryan Pepiot (sub Drew Rasmussen) and Erwin Uceta. https://www.marinertalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=10519 Should the Red Sox pursue a similar package?
  3. Did the 2025 Red Sox fall short of expectations? The Sox won 89 games after FanGraphs projected the Sox with 84.5 wins. Boston fans should appreciate the postseason berth and the first winning Red Sox season since 2021.
  4. This Mariner fan drives past Jesuit several times a week but sent his high-achieving children to public schools that resented the privileged students at Jesuit.
  5. Jesuit High School in Portland/Beaverton, Oregon, produced NBA head coaches Erik Spoelstra (Miami) and David Adelman (Denver) as well as Golden State general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr.

  7. Another analysis of the pending free agency of Eugenio Suarez: https://www.mariners-consigliere.com/p/what-about-geno?utm_source=post-email-title&publication_id=1203224&post_id=177678766&utm_campaign=email-post-title&isFreemail=true&r=2z8agc&triedRedirect=true&utm_medium=email
  8. What makes the thread' title's conclusion official?
  9. It was just odd that one sentence referred to Emerson Hancock by his first name and to Pete Alonso by his last name.
  10. Emerson Hancock posted 0.0 fWAR and a negative 0.2 bWAR over those 90 innings. WAR calculations penalize Seattle pitchers for the perhaps outdated T-Mobile Park factors.
  11. Don't confuse right-hander Emerson Hancock with Seattle prospect Colt Emerson, a 20-year-old infielder ranked ninth overall on MLB.com's Top 100 prospect list: https://www.mlb.com/milb/prospects
  12. Baseball Trade Values also assigns 0 surplus value to Seattle right-hander Emerson Hancock, a 26-year-old former first-round pick with five years of team control. Would anyone trade three arbitration seasons of Triston Casas for five years of Hancock? As the season progressed the Mariners converted Hancock to the bullpen even though Hancock had tossed a nifty quality start in April at Fenway Park: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BOS/BOS202504230.shtml
  13. Does anyone agree with Baseball Trade Values that Triston Casas currently has 0 surplus value? https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/trades?q=triston+casas&page=1
  14. Milwaukee is highly unlikely to trade its ace with a vastly under market value contract for two players who missed this season with injuries and a nearly 31-year-old reliever who posted a negative 0.2 bWAR this year. The trio combined for a negative 1.1 bWAR this season. Teams are reluctant to trade quality for quantity in these 3- or 4-for-1 proposals. The Brewers may lose Rhys Hoskins but should return first baseman Andrew Vaughn, who ths year posted a 141 OPS+ and 1.3 bWAR in 65 games with the Brew Crew. Trivia: What team signed Freddy Peralta and Ketel Marte as teenagers out of the Dominican Republic?
  15. Bo Bichette has posted 20.8 bWAR and an OPS+ of 121 in 748 MLB games. In March 2022 the Red Sox signed Trevor Story when Story had posted 27.0 bWAR and an OPS+ of 112 in 745 MLB games. Bichette turns 28 years old next March; Story was 29 years and three months old when he signed with Boston. Bichette is coming off a 3.4 bWAR season; Story was coming off a 4.3 bWAR season.
  16. A postseason run should always be profitable but this article equates revenues with profits. A postseason run carries expenses such as transportation, lodging, promotion and daily expenses for many team employees, not just the players.
  17. I started to write about Kenji Johjima but decided to ignore signings in the pre-Dipoto era.
  18. This thread's discussion of Seattle's free agent signing has been limited to hitters. The Mariners signed left-hander Robbie Ray to a five-year, $115 million contract in November 2021. The M's signed lefty Yusei Kikuchi to a three-year, $43 million contract in January 2019.
  19. Seattle fans still complain about the Mariners signing Chone Figgins to a four-year contract coming off his 7.7 bWAR season in 2009.
  20. The Mariners have two years of team control on Logan Gilbert, three years on George Kirby, four years each on Bryce Miller and Bryan Woo, and two years with a vesting option for a third year on Luis Castillo. Starters Kade Anderson and Ryan Sloan are among seven Seattle prospects on Jim Bowden's Top 50 prospect list. The Mariners may well make a push to sign first baseman Josh Naylor. However, Seattle returns lefthand-hitting 1B/OF Luke Raley, who in 2023-24 posted 5.9 bWAR to Naylor's 3.7 bWAR over the same two seasons. Recency bias clearly favors Naylor, who is three years younger than Raley.
  21. Both (although hitters Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodriguez and J.P. Crawford signed extensions with the Mariners).
  22. In 10 years under Jerry Dipoto, Seattle's longest contract for a free agent hitter was Mitch Garver's two-year, $24 million deal signed in December 2023. The Mariners are unlikely to have the financial constraints of recent offseasons, but Alex Bregman is a highly unlikely target.
  23. Mariner wins bring me joy. Mariners losses don't bring me suffering; Mariner losses merely bring me an absence of joy. It was a fun season. Sixty years ago I was a Minnesota Twins fan who turned 10 years old during the 1965 World Series when the Dodgers needed seven games to topple my Twins. In my 30s I spent nearly six seasons living within walking distance of Dodger Stadium. I attended many games but could never embrace the Dodgers. I'll be pulling for The Blue of the East over The Blue of the West.
  24. Fans in every sport are always second-guessing. This Seattle fan entered the season with high expectations but the competitive window should not be closing.
