    The Red Sox and Seattle Mariners likely have backup plans at third base in Marcelo Mayer and Ben Williamson. FanGraphs projects Mayer with 1.8 WAR in 128 games next year and Williamson with 1.8 WAR in 130 games. Their MLB debuts this year, Mayer posted 0.4 fWAR (0.2 bWAR) in 44 games and Williamson 0.4 fWAR (1.3 bWAR) in 85 games. Mayer is two years younger than Williamson.

    The Red Sox and Seattle Mariners have similar infield needs with a veteran returning shortstop surrounded by questions marks at the other positions. Tampa Bay could offer solutions with Yandy Diaz and Brandon Lowe, especially if the Rays don't think they can compete in the stacked AL East next season. The issue might be what team could offer the Rays the best prospect package (and whether the Rays would trade within the division).     Did the 2025 Red Sox fall short of expectations? The Sox won 89 games after FanGraphs projected the Sox with 84.5 wins. Boston fans should appreciate the postseason berth and the first winning Red Sox season since 2021.

    Milwaukee is highly unlikely to trade its ace with a vastly under market value contract for two players who missed this season with injuries and a nearly 31-year-old reliever who posted a negative 0.2 bWAR this year. The trio combined for a negative 1.1 bWAR this season. Teams are reluctant to trade quality for quantity in these 3- or 4-for-1 proposals. The Brewers may lose Rhys Hoskins but should return first baseman Andrew Vaughn, who ths year posted a 141 OPS+ and 1.3 bWAR in 65 games with the Brew Crew. Trivia: What team signed Freddy Peralta and Ketel Marte as teenagers out of the Dominican Republic?

    Bo Bichette has posted 20.8 bWAR and an OPS+ of 121 in 748 MLB games. In March 2022 the Red Sox signed Trevor Story when Story had posted 27.0 bWAR and an OPS+ of 112 in 745 MLB games. Bichette turns 28 years old next March; Story was 29 years and three months old when he signed with Boston. Bichette is coming off a 3.4 bWAR season; Story was coming off a 4.3 bWAR season.

    A postseason run should always be profitable but this article equates revenues with profits. A postseason run carries expenses such as transportation, lodging, promotion and daily expenses for many team employees, not just the players.
