  1. Seattle has a relatively soft 18 games remaining in August (7 KC, 3 OAK, 3 CWS, 3 HOU, 2 BAL) but a brutal 29-game September schedule that culminates with 10 games against Texas (7) and Houston (3). The Mariners could control their destiny. Or not.
  2. Thank you for the invitation! Jarren Duran indeed has been among the biggest surprises this season while Taylor Trammell's broken wrist in February put a damper on his season. Duran has broken out this year after posting a wRC+ of 120 in 307 plate appearances last year in Triple A. Trammell, who is a full year younger than Duran, has posted a wRC+ of 130 in 248 plate appearances this year after a late start at Triple A. https://www.fangraphs.com/players/jarren-duran/24617/stats?position=OF https://www.fangraphs.com/players/taylor-trammell/19960/stats?position=OF The chances of a Duran-type turnaround are slim but the Mariners have not given up on Trammell.
  3. It's a long season and the better teams often rise toward the top. Or not.
  4. FanGraphs projects rest-of-season wRC+ of 99 and WAR of 0.5 for Jarren Duran, who in 25 games since the All Star break has posted a .241/.308/.422/.729 line. In August Duran has posted a .177/.222/.412/.634 line in 10 games.
  5. Jarren Duran may be this year’s biggest surprise but his 2.6 fWAR trails the 3.9 fWAR posted by Julio Rodriguez.
  6. BTV has offered volatile valuations for nearly 27-year-old Jarren Duran, who had posted a negative 0.4 fWAR in each of his two previous seasons. The Mariners would probably prefer to take their chances with outfielders Cade Marlowe, Dominic Canzone and Taylor Trammell (to complement Julio Rodriguez and Jarred Kelenic going forward).

  10. The Seattle lineup is missing Teoscar Hernandez, who apparently remains a Mariner despite swirling trade rumors: https://www.marinertalk.com/download/file.php?id=8413&mode=view
  11. A healthy Luis Arias could be a great asset.
  12. MLB Trade Rumors rarely offers original reporting. It's an aggregator that relays secondhand information that typically originates from an organization that employs real reporters. MLBTR sells goods produced by others by summarizing under a Fair Use Doctrine. The original source does not complain if MLBTR provides a link that increases traffic to the original source. In recent years MLB Trade Rumors has offered some analysis and commentary that can be distinguished from reporting.
  13. Today the Mariners sold off their expendables, not their core. Should be a good series. For the second straight year this poster will be treated to a Kutter Crawford start at T-Mobile Park in Seattle.
