  1. Given luxury tax implications, aren't the Red Sox even more motivated to get out from under the contracts of David Price, Nathan Eovaldi and Jackie Bradley Jr.? Or even Mookie Betts? Potential trade partners will use those factors to their advantage in negotiations.
  2. Maybe you're right (or not) but I'll leave it up to investigators who have more information than we have.
  3. As are the executives for potential trade partners. What team is under the most pressure?
  4. Wil Myers is two years younger than Mike Lowell was when the Red Sox acquired Lowell and Josh Beckett in a November 2005 trade of Hanley Ramirez and Anibal Sanchez. Compare the 2019 stats of Myers with the 2005 stats of Lowell: WM 490 PA, .239/.321/.418/.739, OPS+ 95, bWAR -0.3, fWAR 0.5 ML 559 PA, .236/.298/.360/.658, OPS+ 77, bWAR -0.9, fWAR 0.1 Their career stats today and in November 2005: WM 3145 PA, .251/.327/.436/.763, OPS+ 107, 8.6 bWAR, 9.5 fWAR ML 4020 PA, .272/.339/.461/.800, OPS+ 109, 14.3 bWAR, 17.4 fWAR Lowell may be the better righthand-hitting corner infielder, but Myers is not without value. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/myerswi01.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/l/lowelmi01.shtml
  5. Lefthander Joey Lucchesi, who posted a win against the Red Sox last August, has a surplus value of $38.3 million, according to Baseball Trade Values: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/players/8747/ https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SDN/SDN201908250.shtml Trivia: Lucchesi started half of the MLB games I attended last year (winning neither): https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/WAS/WAS201904280.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SDN/SDN201905170.shtml
  6. A healthy David Price (although Mookie Betts may be a better bet than Price to be healthy come July).
  7. Compare the lines for Nathan Eovaldi and Kenta Maeda over Maeda's four MLB seasons: NE 69 G, 54 GS, 303.1 IP, 4.69 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, ERA+ 94 KM 137 G, 103 GS, 589 IP, 3.87 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, ERA+ 105 The 2020 Marcel projections: NE 94 IP, 4.79 ERA, 1.34 WHIP KM 137 IP, 4.20 ERA, 1.21 WHIP https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/e/eovalna01.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/maedake01.shtml
  8. The Dodgers won't want the underwater contract of Nathan Eovaldi in the deal when, according to one source, Mookie Betts and Alex Verdugo have the same surplus value: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/players/7685/ https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/players/9657/ https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/players/8096/
  9. The 2020 Marcel projections for Wil Myers and Mitch Moreland: WM 426 PA, .244/.322/.444/.765 MM 413 PA, .243/.320/.451/.771 Moreland's numbers with Boston and Myers' over the same period: MM 1370 PA, .251/.319/.444/.763, OPS+ 101 WM 1482 PA, .244/.323/.444/.786, OPS+ 105 The one-time All Stars are separated by five years in age. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/myerswi01.shtml https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/morelmi01.shtml
  10. According to The Athletic, the Red Sox have discussed a trade involving Mookie Betts and Wil Myers: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/01/padres-discussing-mookie-betts-trade-with-red-sox.html https://theathletic.com/1557943/2020/01/23/sources-padres-and-red-sox-have-discussed-potential-mookie-betts-trade/ That makes little sense although Athletic reporter Dennis Lin was in on the breaking story of the Craig Kimbrel trade back with Lin was with the San Diego Union-Tribune.
  11. Jackie Bradley Jr., J.D. Martinez and Brandon Workman have limited trade value: https://www.baseballtradevalues.com/teams/604/ ... but the Red Sox could pursue trades nevertheless.
  12. I'll place a hold on the book at the library.
  13. Trade Mookie Betts for top prospects, including one MLB-ready starter. Execute a trade centered on David Price and Wil Myers. Have a Cuban take over right field, either free agent Yasiel Puig or a called-up Rusney Castillo. Be prepared for the Red Sox to use openers instead of starters a few times a week. Hope that the 2020 Red Sox can exceed lowered expectations with no delusions about being World Series contenders. Welcome the 2020-21 offseason and beyond with high hopes minus the current financial constraints. The Red Sox went all-in leading up the the 2018 World Series title and now should step back for one season to reload. Or not.
  14. Why would one think Logan Allen was thrown in "for no reason"?
  15. Precisely. The Red Sox would nearly double their savings from the $9 million in real dollars to the $17+ million AAV for the luxury tax calculations. Probably no other deal offers that bang for the buck.
  16. Even without that statement the rest of the league had reason to believe the Red Sox were motivated to get under the luxury tax threshold.
  17. Hall of Fame chances drop when the body gives out. Dustin Pedroia has posted 46.6 fWAR and 51.7 bWAR over 14 seasons while Seattle righthander Felix Hernandez has posted 54.0 fWAR and 50.2 bWAR over 15 seasons, each a rare player who has stayed with one team over a decade. The former MVP and former Cy Young winner will likely fall short of the Hall of Fame, even with Hernandez seeking a second wind with the Atlanta Braves.
  18. A positive spin on Red Sox prospect Triston Casas: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/sunday-notes-red-sox-prospect-triston-casas-is-brobdingnagian-and-emulates-joey-votto/

  20. Time for the moderators to step in. Respectfully.
  21. Not directly on point: https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/thomas_aquinas_148678
  22. https://scontent-sea1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/83163454_10219234574328041_1713907244929646592_n.jpg?_nc_cat=108&_nc_ohc=j4JecTbgSNoAX9oF5th&_nc_ht=scontent-sea1-1.xx&oh=a1cbe5fc54f5c57fa96a2808e0af4ee9&oe=5EA57375
  23. Absolutely. J.D. Martinez does not have the final say (although he may be right).
  24. The rowdy fans were probably across the street cheering on the current Major League Soccer champion Seattle Sounders, whose season overlaps with the Mariners' season. Or not. I tentatively plan to go up the Seattle in April to again watch the Mariners take a four-game series from the Red Sox for the second year in a row. Like last year, the Red Sox fans will be more vocal than the Mariner fans.
