  1. And which of them will pitch for Boston next year?
  2. From MLBTR: "Among those with at least 250 innings over the last three seasons, Heaney’s 27.1 K% ranks 24th in the Majors. His K-BB% ranks 21st. The skills are there for a 4.00 ERA starter. Always a flyball pitcher, Heaney was undone in 2021 by allowing 18% of his flyballs to leave the yard. A team with a big ballpark might wind up with a bargain." https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2021/11/top-50-mlb-free-agent-rankings.html
  3. They already combine to be a less productive hitter than Fraley...
  4. No. What happened was Boston trade one half of their worst contract in that deal. Had LA taken the entire Price cntract, we probably don't get Verdugo. If Cincinnti is looking for a better return for Castillo - and they probsbly are - coupling him with Moustakas is the worst case. If they just want to offload a lot of money, then it gets more possible...
  5. He was also very good over the last 4 months of last season. As there was a lot of speculation about how many starting pitchers would struggle after a lot of inactivity in 2020, his extremely slow start might easily be justified...
  6. I dare you to...
  7. Friedman got impatient. Maybe he figured he needed to find a cheap replacement on the Injured List for Kershaw?
  8. His 4.33 FIP over the past 4 years would at least make him an average starter, maybe slightly below. But bear in mind he has probably tried to pitch injured, given how easily he seems to get hurt. He's not a game changer, but he has some skills that unfortunately seem to hurt him physically...
  9. OK. Opinions will be dividied on the subject, as others have already shown. Obviously, that isn't likely to be the deal, assuming there is one at all...
  10. That one feels like the most fair one to me. It does operate on the assumption that Suarez can handle 2B, which he probably can since he did come up as a shortstop with the Tigers and won moved off SS Sto 3B to accommodate a better defender in Zack Cozart.
  11. Would you give up Houck to get Castillo? I'm on the fence...
  12. ... which could be interpreted as a mild recommendation. Unless you are opposed to good value...
  13. I like the ide of keeping Houck and Whitlock on the pen to anchor it. If Barnes can rebound somewhat, then Taylor, Brasier, Valdez, Hernandez and Valdez combine to make for a very solid bullpen...
  14. TJS is certainly not the career ender it used to be, but so far history has shown many pitchers need a second one after about 600 IP. And the frequency of getting a second TJS is too high to ignore. I think the health history alone does make Houck the far more appealing trade target of the two. But giving up on Houck to get Castillo is still a dilemma. I'd probably consider trading Casas over Houck, but not sure how interested Cincinnati is in Casas given that Votto still has 2 years (and $57mill) on his contract, can't play anywhere else, and is virtually untradable even without taking into consideration his 10-5 rights...
  15. I'm not sure Jeter Downs carries the appeal he did 12 months ago. I haven't given up on him and think he was placed in a very bad position, basically skipping AA ball after missing a year, but I do think it means any trade of him is definitely selling low, assuming any team is interested at all...
  16. From a baseball standpoint, I greatly prefer Suarez to Moustakas. However, just because Suarez is expensive doesn't mean the Reds are willing to dump the ML home run leader over the past 4 seasons so readily. Moustakas' experience at 2B appears to be an advantage, but even with Suarez never playing there, I actually trust him more at the position than the slow-footed and oft-injured Moustakas. Now maybe the Sox could deal Casas (and either Groome or Bello) for Castillo and Suarez, and then put Suarez at 3B and move Devers over to 1B. Of course, that leaves Dalbec without a position and no one to play 2B....
  17. If I am the GM of the Reds, I stop it at the Big 4. Nothing against Whitlock, but taking on a pitcher whose already had one TJ surgery is not a good way to rebuild...
  18. Well, if the Sox want Castillo, they are going to have to give the Reds something good. If the goal is to hold on to Casas, Mayer, Yorke, and Houck, it gets much more difficult. Jarren Duran only gets you so much. Even taking back a questionable contract like Suarez (and then trying to figure out where he plays) doesn't really help the situation much. Taking back Moustakas might, but at some point, Cincinnati is probably going to ralize it is unwise to dump their worst contract in a package with their best trade bait...
  19. Per the simulator at BTV, a fair deal would be Castillo, Eugenio Suarez (and his 3 years $38.5mill left) and Nick Senzel for Tanner Houck and Jarren Duran. Or - Castillo and Suarez for Houck and Dalbec. Or - Castillo and Mike Moustakas (2 yrs - $38mill) for Duran, Dalbec and Brayan Bello. There you go - deals where the Sox do get to keep Casas, Mayer and Yorke. Of course, they do have to give up Houck, or take back Mike Moustakas. So it's not necessarily a good thing...
  20. The last 2 offseasons have been insanely slow throughout November and December. CBA or not, that is possibly the new norm. So I don't expect much in the way of free agent signings for several weeks anyway, especially since the top names this offseason all play the same position, so each will be waiting on the others to set the bar. Between now and 2022, most likely we see nothing more than a bunch of fringey short-term signings of borderline players who carry little risk and very likely no reward, much like the Dodgers' signing of Andrew Heaney...
  21. If the Sox can get Castillo and hold on to those 3, they should do it today. I struggle to imagine how they would be able to do that, however. Unless they are dealing Houck...
  22. He got off to a slow start. His ERA at the end of May was 7.22. For the last 135 IP of the season, his ERA was 2.73...
  23. Heaney is another one where the question was never really about talent. He just can't stay on the field...
  24. $8.5mill should translate to about $500K per IP…
  25. Did mvp recommend Escobar? If so, I’m off Escobar now…
