  1. Yes and we traded for that guy last year, and ate Adam Ottavino’s salary in the deal…
  2. His 105th pitch was like 98mph. He’ll be fine…
  3. With the bullpen burned out a bit after getting lit up last night and another game today and more tomorrow, this was so necessary…
  4. Is it a fad? Is anyone else doing it?
  5. That they acquired Wacha and Hill this off-season to go with Sale, Eovaldi and Pivetta does certainly indicate they planned to start the season with both Houck and Whitlock in the bullpen. By the time they learned Sale was hurt, there wasn’t much left on the free agent market for SP. Not sure if they talked to Oakland about Manaea or Montas and what if anything happened there. But at the very least, they needed to do better work backfilling the bullpen when relievers got bumped to the rotation. But Cora’s use of Houck has been beyond stupid. Not sure if this is his idea, some sort of stupid developmental plan (which seems incredibly stupid with its specificity if it is one) or what the (complete absence of) logic is…
  6. I do think Cora deserves a huge chunk of blame for how he’s using it…
  7. I think a big part of it was a lot of scouts just didn’t see that level of talent in the 18yo kid from Tennessee. Some players just get a lot better after that age…
  8. It’s interesting that Betts would have been a star anywhere. Betts was drafted in the fifth round and was the 172nd player chosen in 2011. If he was such a obvious star talent who was going to succeed anywhere, why did he get passed over 171 times?
  9. One of the reasons the Sox failed to develop any young pitchers is that it’s a myth based on double standards. Fans who repeat this myth only count pitchers drafted/signed by Boston and pitch for Boston. And they always ignore the ones traded away, like Masterson, Hagadone, Kopech, Presey, etc. I suppose if they also counted the ones the Sox acquired like ERod, I could see the point. And the notion that Sox coaching/development ruined Chavis and Dalbec and (before them) Middlebrooks ignores a really obvious flaw - all these players made the majors, something that is not the given that many fans seem to think…
  10. From the same people who brought you “See”!!
  11. The original bullpen had 3 experienced closers in Barnes, Robles, and Diekman. Barnes just can’t get it together. Robles is the lucky version of Brasier. And Diekman is subject to bouts of wildness and a ridiculously predictable over-dependence on his slider. To me, that leaves Houck…
  12. Over Whitlock and/or Houck? Don’t forget until the new CBA agreement, Sale was still assumed to be an active pitcher and a member of the rotation with Eovaldi, Pivetta, Wacha and Hill. And once they learned Sale broke himself again, that only bumps one of the two into the rotation…
  13. I think jad wants to know if Barnes can go to the minors, not what happens if/when the Sox DFA him…
  14. Even if he has two options left?
  15. The one plus to the whole Barnes situation is for once, Cora didn’t use him in a close game…
  16. If soxprospects.com has any credibility, Barnes has two options left. Is THIS true?
  17. Matt Carpenter hasn’t been an All Star since 2016. Other All Stars that year include David Ortiz, Carlos Beltran and Mark Trumbo…
  18. I believe he’s been hitting in the 6 slot more lately. I wouldn’t be surprised if his “promotion” to the fifth spot was more to push lefty-hitting Verdugo down.
  19. Yes. Carpenter has a .605 OPS (70 OPS+) since 2020 and has no MLB plate appearances this season before tonight. Cordero has a modest 98 OPS+…
  20. Or … it’s not broken so don’t fix it…
  21. Watching the White Sox broadcast. Best line of the night from Jason Benetti “in this series the Red Sox have stranded more people than a discount cruise line”.
  22. Nothing at this stage is early for 39yo Robinson Cano…
  23. We know they anticipated paying him $125 mill over 5 years…
  24. I said the Sox had 4 players who would command money in a specific range. Sale got money in that range, injury or not. That he isn’t working out is a negative scenario, but very a possibility for any of those 4. The point is - trying to retain all 4, or even the other 3, was always going to be difficult if not impossible. Especially on a team that clearly does not want to operate with a budget over $240mill. But let’s leave Sale out and live in a hypothetical world where the Sox keep Bogaets, Betts and Devers at a realistic AAV of $90mill for the three. So next year, who pitches?
  25. Even last night when he came up with the bases loaded, he hit the ball hard. Just right at the 2b. Maybe 10 feet to either side, that game is tied…
