    The problem isn’t that computers have gotten better. There has always been an innate nature among competitive types to seek out an advantage. This has been going on since Day 2 of organized sports. Just because the specific analytics are new doesn’t change this. And while maybe you didn’t like some of the strategies employed through analytics, there are probably other you did. Many people railed about the shift, for example (itself a 100 year old strategy), but how many people hate seeing the team’s best hitter bat second and come up more often?

    Do they need to DFA Brewer when any of those players return? All of them are currently on the 40 man. They would need to if Brewer has no options and the Yankees have no other injuries that necessitate keeping him…

    He still needs his 90 days. If the Phillies just keep rehabbing him and burying him on the IL, the Sox have a legitimate grievance…

    I did. This is also part of my issue with Bloom is how he seemingly ignores starting pitchers. I certainly don’t want anything stupid like another Price contract. And I get that he’s going to see something in the Martin Perez’ and Garrett Richards of the world that I don’t. But there has to be some middle ground in between not signing long term starting pitcher contracts and just signing one year deals. Especially if you don’t draft pitchers or trade for pitching prospects…

    Only the top 4 are even eligible. And all AAA teams are loaded with borderline veterans. AAA ball is barely considered the farm anymore…

    And also untrue. Kenley Jansen’s contract is larger. In terms of guaranteed money, Chris Martin’s is, too…

    Why? If you discount the deals from Dombrowski, the Sox don’t have a lot of big deals for pitchers. The largest one Epstein gave out was for Lackey, and it wasn’t really Earth-shattering at the time…

    I don’t think he ruined Song’s career. I go think he should have tried to complete a deal and simply optioned So g to the minors. And maybe he did try. Or maybe it was a token, lackluster effort…

    I don’t get that. 1. While there are certainly more of them now, pretending analytics are a new development is simply historically incorrect. 2. The previous Arms Race that far too many players tried to use to gain an advantage but soon found it far too common was steroids. Was the game more fun then?

    Maybe it was. Maybe the Sox made one, too. But knowing Song would be free this year from his military obligation didn’t fix his biggest flaw and doesn’t make him worthy of a 40 man roster spot. And, despite Dombrowski’s desperate attempts, certainly doesn’t make him would try of a 26 man roster spot…

    Vazquez is better than McGuire. Of course he’s also older and costs over 6 times as much…

    He’s not a long term solution. He’s a stopgap backstop that they hope can at least hold everything together…

    The point is the fate of the players they acquired doesn’t mean they didn’t value McGuire. In Toronto’s case, if you revisit the MLBTR article, they moved McGuire for exactly the reasons I said - he didn’t have an option, they didn’t want to carry 3 catchers, and Collins had an option. That Collins didn’t work out for them of immaterial. I mean, 3 days ago, the A’s waived (and eventually traded) Cristina Pache, a key part of the Matt Olson trade. That Pache didn’t work out has no bearing on how they called Olson. It does mean they probably overvalued Pache at some point…

    So? The Red Sox jettisoned Jeter Downs. Does that mean they gave up on Mookie?

    To be fair, he was behind two of the better catchers in the AL, including one All Star. At some point, bear in mind both of these teams also traded for McGuire as well. The Jays just had far too much catcher depth. And the White Sox presumably saw him as an upgrade over Zack Collins. Don’t get me wrong. You’ll see better catchers. But that doesn’t necessarily mean McGuire is Everyman With A Mitt…

    Also the Jays’ trade of McGuire for another backup catcher in Zack Collins might have simply been related to the fact that Collins had an option left while McGuire did not. The Jays, already with Danny Jansen and Alejandro Kirk, probably did not want 3 catchers on the 26 man roster. Not so sure anyone just “gave up” on McGuire…

    I’m arguing that the White Sox wanted a LHRP after Aaron Bummer, which they felt they needed once they decided to send Tanner Banks down to the minors in June. Maybe Diekman wasn’t the best option available, but he was probably the best one that could be had so cheaply…
