  1. What if the big issue with Bogaerts’ contract negotiations was his refusal to eventually move off SS? You still give him what he wants because: 1. You don’t care about defense? 2. You are willing to let him play out his years at a position he will not be able to handle in the (potentially very) near future? 3. You plan to move him to a new position behind his back and have an unhappy albeit well-paid player?
  2. How do you know why they signed him? Not to mention, it’s ok to change plans as things change our S you learn new things. For example, learning Story is a GG-caliber 2b could and should be a factor…
  3. Likely, but not necessarily definite…
  4. So you’re not for bringing back Chavis?
  5. So… innings. The other two are less quantifiable…
  6. We won’t be the Marlins. The Marlins have pitching…
  7. The irony there is the shaky 2015 rotation featured the 2016 Cy Young winner…
  8. I know there is a good chance Houck goes to the rotation. I personally don’t like it because in don’t like the idea of starting 2033 with 3 SPs that ended 2022 on the Injured List. Also I just like Houck as a reliever. But as of now, there are far more options for building the bullpen than the rotation. I’m also mildly intrigued by this guy the Rangers DFAd in Nate Mears…
  9. He certainly could have, and had that left no room in the budget for Sale, it would have accomplished two good things. But considering a Bogaerts had one season left until free agency , it’s really shocking he signed anything at all..
  10. If we got in we did. Maybe not a good chance, but absolutely had one. The Phillies were the last team eliminated, but they only won 9 more games than the Sox and were the last team into the NL playoffs…
  11. At this point, certainly still possible. Heck signing Greinke, Wacha and Fulmer is still possible, although I think/hope they save something to spend on a SS. Of course right now we’re only talking about the free agent market. A trade for a SP is also possible. Certainly the Marlins have available arms, and the salary dump trade market includes pitchers like Patrick Corbin, Madison Bumgarner, Yusei Kikuchi, Carlos Carrasco and old friend Eduardo Rodriguez…
  12. Not locking up Mookie was on Dombrowski, who had 4 years to get a deal done…
  13. At the time they weren’t that far out of the third wild card. But they didn’t know Eovaldi would only make two more starts all year and that Devers would be in an injury-induced funk at the plate for the bulk of August…
  14. Wacha is another option, but there is nothing wrong with Greinke, who did throw 137 IP last year with an ERA+ of 111. Mata will be a depth option as their will be plenty of IP for him, Walter, Crawford, Murphy, etc.
  15. True. But none of us had Wacha or Hill in mind last year. (And several have called for bringing Wacha back, and he remains an option.) I have no idea who Bloom has in mind. When the off-season began, I didn’t peg Eflin as a target, either…
  16. I know at some point this is not going to work my more, but it is still December. It would be nice if he brought an SP on board by now, but not essential yet. Eflin didn’t work out, so Bloom is also not working from what many might look at as the top of the free agent list…
  17. Stories about any team being interested are clickbait. I’d bet it’s often as little as a two sentence discussion…
  18. I do question who is calling these the top priority. The Sox have signed 5 free agents after all…
  19. Just sign Andrus, Fulmer and a SP…
  20. The MLB Network talking heads thought he would move to third next season when Machado opts out. When I heard that, I couldn’t help but wonder if Bogaerts was on board with that plan…
  21. Ok, if you like. Just because it didn’t work out doesn’t mean he want their top priority, right? After all, that whole concept of “top priority” doesn’t imply any sort of intensity; it just means nothing else was more important at the time. But we do know that they viewed Devers as a DH/1b and the initial offer was comparable to Matt Olson’s contract. Presumably this came up in talks with Devers. So there is the possibility that when negotiating with Bogaerts, the initial talks also included discussions of changing position off shortstop. In the past, Bogaerts has been openly reluctant to change, and I don’t know if he still is. But if he (or his reps) stated the preference was to remain at shortstop, certainly it explains why the Sox didn’t go beyond 4 years initially. It does make me wonder if San Diego broached the subject of changing positions with Bogaerts. Or if they ignored it, or an 11 year deal made Bogaerts more flexible…
  22. That is not how minor league promotions work. Goodrum is supposedly the AAA shortstop, but as he is not on the 40 man roster, he cannot be promoted…
  23. There’s always the possibility they’re being too honest…
  24. And a deal for Miranda and Ober would be equally close and make even more sense for Boston…
  25. And judging by the comments, not garnering much support. One of those “hey let’s trade our spare parts for a superstar” blogs. If the Sox shop Devers, they will absolutely see more exciting packages than Kepler and Arraez…
