    That does sum it up. And we got his 27-30 years for less than SD will be paying him for ages 38-41. Dombrowski was often far too generous with his contracts (and apparently still is), but his contract with Bogaerts was brilliant on so many levels…

    Bogaerts was one year away from free agency. Very likely if you don’t give him an opt out clause, he’s gone after 2019. Why else would he have signed that deal?

    First of all, “clutch” is a very subjective term. So it’s not much of a measure. This is not up for debate; it’s been the subject of multiple debates. Second, while certainly a lot less games played, McGuire has had starting jobs. And no catcher is a full time player. Third, for his career, Vazquez has been worth 0.0167 fWAR/game. McGuire has been worth 0.0169 fWAR/game. That’s about as equal as it gets. I don’t care if you don’t like fWAR. It’s objective. Not like “clutch”. And don’t debate that point; it’s been belabored to death…

    Stop. I didn’t like the Story signing, but at least liked it temporarily killed the Tampa North rhetoric. But I also don’t think a flexor strain automatically equates to surgery, and would like some medical opinion from people who don’t think surgery is as routine as brushing one’s teeth or some sort of professional obligation. I also don’t think every time a player needs surgery, it’s because something was missed a year earlier…

    I’ll predict a trade for Paul DeJong and his $9mill salary, which Bloom will use an an opportunity to poach a prospect from St. Louis. No predictions on the quality of the prospect…

    Yes and it would be well spent. But we both know such an opportunity will never arise. So my biggest hope is the Padres cannot extend Soto. Rafaela, Mayer, Mata, etc all work out. And the Sox swoop in and sign Juan in two years. Bit of a long term hope, but if there is one player worth locking up for 10-15 years, it’s Soto..

    I added one more year, but basically the same. Acuna missed a lot of time but IMO is a better player than Devers, and this is not a slight to Devers at all. To me, Devers is clearly among the handful of best MLB players age 26 and under. Bad glove or not, he is still a solid foundation to build around. That said, I’d deal him for Soto in a heartbeat…

    I think in this case there’s a lot of justified fan frustration. Sale, for example, took forever to get TJ surgery and missed a lot of time he really didn’t need to had he decided (or the team decided, not sure who makes the call) to have it earlier. And Story now appears to be on a similar track just after the Sox decided to part ways with Bogaerts.

    I imagine the risk of dying during Tommy John surgery is rather low, but yes, it’s not non-existent. But I would also not be surprised if the overwhelming majority of flexor strains among athletes do not result in surgery and become cured over time. Of course not all do. Bryce Harper will miss several months with the exact same injury due to having surgery. Christian Vazquez also sat out a year with the same problem. But still, the number of non-pitchers dealing with elbow injuries that require surgery does seem to be very low to me…

    Now when players sign these deals, they have tons of activities prohibited. No skiing, for example. No motorcycles. No bicycling (yes, I mean you, Chris!) Given the amount of control the team assumes over the player’s physical activities, is the choice to undergo surgery even the player’s option? Or does that decision come from the team? And if so, can the player decline and seek other treatments? Or do those require a similar level of team approval?

    I would imagine every player has issues in their physicals. Remember the foot issue that prolonged JD Martinez initial contract? The Sox did put some team protection in there for it, but they never needed it. The Dodgers have since signed JD with no such publicized language. Either because his foot healed or, more likely,it’s not so necessary on a 1 year deal. With Story, the flexor strain was a known issue. But I don’t know how often or how severe it has to be to become a surgical concern. Not even sure our resident doctor knows, although his input (which I’m requesting here, Jacko) will certainly be better than mine…

    Wondering if the Story injury means everything gets filled internally. Will Ceddane Rafaela become the starting SS? Will a platoon of Enmanuel Valdez and Christian Arroyo handle 2b? (The latter does seem more likely.)

    His defense is awful. But also, he is third in MLB for career fWAR for players 26 and under, behind only Juan Soto and Ronald Acuna Jr…

    Because I would imagine team physicians are under intense pressure to make sure assets get back on the field ASAP, regardless of physiological realities…
