There’s a few reasons. Like that he wasn’t very good in 2019. And that he wasn’t very good in 2020. And he wasn’t very good in 2021. And in 2022, he looked good because of his ERA, but his FIP suggested he wasn’t quite that good. One year? Probably worth a gamble. A multiyear deal and it wouldn’t be long before we were clamoring for his DFA…

Could be a “fielding slump” by McGuire. This is the first year in his career where he has had a negative DRS and more than 80 innings. Certainly you’re not suggesting he forgot how to catch?

I don’t think this of a very accurate statement. Outside of Iglesias (which was 10 years ago), what great fielding shortstop(s) do the Sox dump in favor of a better hitting one? Orlando Cabrera? That was nearly 20 years ago, and really he was not resigned in order to take advantage of a drafting loophole. Besides his replacement was a two time Gold Glove winner (albeit a defensive flop for the Sox)…

If they DFA Kluber, I assume at least one of them is in the rotation, presumably Whitlock. Houck’s issues with starting and facing the opposing lineups are well known and if that means his future is in the pen, that’s not a bad thing. I could see Crawford, but I like him in the bullpen as well. And Pivetta isn’t Kluber, throwing with a rebuilt arm unable to reach the velocities where he was successful. He’s had a rough stretch but is probably just as likely to turn it around and be successful as Crawford is. And if nothing else, his durability is an asset…

What if Wacha’s next two years look like Kluber this year? Is he still a better deal?

1. Still better than Kluber, if for no other reason than regularly racing the sixth inning. 2. Which high upside younger pitcher looks better? Drohan and his career total of 39 IP above A ball? Matt Dermody? Walter, Murphy and Mata are struggling in AAA right now…

Kluber is in uncharted territory. He simply cannot throw as hard as he did even last year. At least Pivetta hasn’t lost any velocity on his fastball. In fact, he’s up 0.4mph from last year…

Seriously? The guy is 23 years old with 240 career PA. A year ago, older players like Duran and Winckowski were labeled on this board as “not Major League material.” And yet now both have suddenly become major contributors…
