  1. I think a lot of people have some sort of freaky Randy Newman Complex. Devers is 6’3”, so clearly he can play adequate defense. Casas is 6’5”, so he’s even better. But Yoshida is like 19” tall. Too short to play good defense..
  2. And what does those numbers rank them? (Also I believe those are “below league average” not “below replacement”)
  3. Bear in mind: 1. The Sox $300mill offer was reported by multiple sources, none of whom were Dombrowski. 2. The “no $300mill” story from one source 3. Players always lie and say stuff like the new team “has the best chance to win,” which coincidentally always is the team with the highest offer. 4. No Sox GM or CBO has ever used the press as a negotiation ploy..
  4. Improving the pitching will be difficult if they continue to throw in front of that pathetic defense. Philly’s defense ducks and it’s why Nola looks like a league average pitcher. Improving the defense makes it much easier to improve the pitching. It’s like if you have a car that’s leaking oil, do you listen to someone who has the solution “you just need to buy better and more expensive oil!!”?
  5. The Sox have the unchallenged worst combination of corner infield defense. Yoshida is not good on LF, but two of the 5 teams with worse defense are heading into the postseason. There’s a good chance his defensive shortcomings are being overblown and possibly used as a scapegoat…
  6. Devers and Casas are adequate fielders? Casas ranks 15th out of 16 qualified first basemen in OAA. Devers ranks 15th out of 15 qualified third basemen in OAA. What exactly would be inadequate? Yoshida ranks 13th out of 18 left fielders in OAA (700 innings min). Why is Yoshida considered the defensive weak link?
  7. Nope. Al Gore…
  8. Hey Gallo would have solved OF issues and Chapman (whom I did not bring up in this convo) would solve Infield defense problems. As unlikely as Chapman is, he’s still more likely than signing both Yamamoto and Nola…
  9. Only after the holidays that I intentionally omitted. Would Montgomery Burns have worked better?
  10. Ebenezer Scrooge imagery is not savage enough for general miserdom?!??
  11. I don’t think either is the answer…
  12. I would agree it depends on his terms, but we also believe that the Sox didn’t withdraw from the bidding on Eflin and Eovaldi because they chose to sign Yoshida instead. And no non-pitcher on the market would help the Sox staff more than Chapman would…
  13. Going cheaper. Henry wants payroll down under $500K. Reportedly he is in talks with Ebenezer Scrooge to run the front office, as long as the season ends before the holidays and there’s no chance of him being visited by the Ghosts of Free Agents Past. (This is my 5Gold impression. Scale of 1 to 10?)
  14. Well, stories plural. I know there is a lot of copycat journalism out there, but that offer was widely reported. At least the money was, not the years. The thing is, Mookie had every right to reject it. He had every right to try to rest free agency (which he reportedly Also wanted to do). And sure that type of attitude can make a player look motivated. solely by finances, but know what else makes a player look financially driven? Accepting a $300mill contract…
  15. 162 games in 180ish days is brutal. With no adrenaline, Yoshida probably isn’t the only one just worn down…
  16. Well… https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mookie-betts-says-he-doesnt-regret-turning-down-300-million-offer-from-red-sox/ Of course now he says it was never offered. If you go back and read some old articles, Mookie simply wanted more money. Now he says that was never the case back then and that he never got an offer he has as alert admitted he turned down…
  17. Not seeing the downside there…
  18. The biggest holes are the ones atop the rotation. And they need to stop pulling pitchers out of the bullpen to fill starter roles. Not citing the 16 games the Sox used an opener, they had 4 pitchers who made at least 8 starts and 8 relief appearances. And that’s not counting Kluber, who was banished into a relief role until he was mercifully put to sleep. The rest of the lineup might already be in house. They have a glut of outfielders. They’re not likely to move defensive liabilities Devers and Casas of position. Story and Wong will certainly return. That leaves 2b…
  19. Dalbec doesn’t play well enough to garner any interest. That he also requires a 40 man roster spot just ices the lack of interest…
  20. Giants fire Gabe Kapler. Kapler and the Giants have been very successful breathing life into some fading pitching careers. Overall he has a very good track record as a manager. If Cora gets dismissed or promoted, Kapler is a very good choice…
  21. Mookie is great at a lot of things. Hitting. Fielding. Baserunning. Probably a great teammate, too. But this last trip to Fenway taught us he isn’t all that good at keeping his stories straight…
  22. Most of those business types have spent their entire career working for baseball teams…
  23. I’ll take that wager…
  24. Huh? While no one would object to improving the offense (unless it drastically weakens the defense), it’s actually not the problem with this team. Not even close. And the logic is wrong. Miami is 25th in MLB in runs scored and is very, very likely heading into the postseason…
