  1. I think that was all just a family-sized firkin of fecal matter. If Ripken got by defensively on the “Wisdom of the Ages”, it didn’t show up on his reduced assist and output totals. “Sure he’s slower than the other shortstops, but he’s like Radar on M*A*S*H; he senses where the grounder is going and gets there first. It’s like a super power. Spoooo-ooooky!” That was all just some lousy backstory to justify keeping him at SS for all those years. And a sad addition, as Ripken carried enough of a legacy without folks just making stuff up like that.
  2. Golf is one of two sports I will never watch and never play. The other is auto racing…
  3. I agree. I think he transitioned over to starting CF. To me, he makes Ceddanne Rafaela just a little easier to part with. (Although Rafaela is probably the best defensive SS on the Red Sox 40 man roster right now.)
  4. You discourage opinions all the time. Over 50% of your posts last year were dedicated to ensuring no one said anything positive about the Red Sox…
  5. No. Because 1) it’s a prediction, not an opinion. My opinion of Blackburn is not remarkably flattering. And 2) success or failure vs the Red Sox lineup is irrelevant since they would be the one team he has no chance of facing…
  6. I’ve said as much multiple times. But at some point I think he transitioned from “sell high candidate” to “obvious starting CF”…
  7. In your own example, you cite the biggest problem with fielding percentage; it can penalize players just for getting there. For example, let’s say you hit 100 identical groundballs to two shortstops. Shortstop A gets to 80 of them but makes every play. Shortstop B gets to all 100 but makes 10 errors. Which shortstop is the better defender? Shortstop A had a better fielding percentage, but shortstop B was responsible for 10 more outs and only allowed half as many runners to reach base…
  8. Exactly. But that was exactly what the complainant said the Sox needed…
  9. I’m standing by 1. Selling high on Paxton 2. Moving Duvall as he’s probably the most intriguing short-timer on the roster (outside of Paxton and Turner). 3. Adding RHSP Paul Blackburn
  10. Then fire him. It’s the manager’s job to put what he thinks is the best team on the field. Not the GMs. Not the President of Operations’. Not the Owner’s. The whole feud between Billy Beane and Art Howe in the movie Moneyball was all just movie make-believe. Turns out in real life, that wasn’t even Beane and Howe; it was two actors named Brad Pitt and Phillip Seymour Hoffman…
  11. It’s a baseball forum. Not a shanty in the woods…
  12. You’d be foolish to think this forum of maybe 50 people voices the entirety of Red Sox Nation. You’d be even more foolish to think any of us care what the Outside World (for lack of a better term) thinks…
  13. Mondesi was a bad idea. Although the Sox did hold on to Chang, who can certainly field the role. I also wondered why it took so long to promote Hamilton, especially since he was considered enough of a talent to be placed on the 40 man roster. The SS situation definitely took a wrong turn or two. I don’t know how much faith they had in Kike, and I totally understand giving him a chance. But it went on far too long…
  14. No. You cheer against executives who run the team using a different philosophy than your preference. You’ve admitted that already…
  15. At least I cheer for my team and not my ego. You do realize you keep admitting that, right?
  16. Fielding percentage is a useless stat. The Sox struggled with Kike at SS. But he’s no longer the SS with Chang - who was posting solid defensive metrics all over the place before getting hurt - holding that role for the foreseeable future. Kike is an excellent defensive 2b. Duran isn’t ideal in CF but is at least several million times better than the raw disaster he was last year. Verdugo is posting some of the best defensive metrics in to he league in RF. Wong is a flat out good defensive catcher. Devers isn’t great at third, but he’s not really making money because of his glove. Casas is disappointing at 1b but he can and will improve…
  17. Also - bold prediction coming! Today’s Oakland starter - Paul Blackburn - will finish the season as a member of the Red Sox…
  18. I stand by my prediction. The other movables - Duvall, Kike, Turner - don’t figure to garner nearly as much interest as Paxton. And there is a good possibility none of them get traded due to lack of interest or better options on the market.
  19. I think Bloom will trade Paxton for the following reasons: 1. With so many teams in contention, there may not be very many sellers, so that’s where the market is. 2. Paxton has been good, is cheap, but is not controlled for next season 3. Let’s face it - the guy’s arm and shoulder are time bombs. And the timer is winding down…
  20. 1. So it truly was bias/close-mindedness. A point for honesty, but deducting maximum points for obvious reasons 2. You do realize the Sox are winning again, right? 3. And if you “love being in the minority…” blah blah blah, that means you’re actually enjoying it when the team fails…
  21. The Sox will do the “buy and sell” dual approach. They will move Paxton and Duvall. They will acquire a SP with more years of control than Paxton. Likeliest trade bait - Ceddanne Rafaela, since Duran is making a strong case for CF. But if he can move another prospect instead. With Houck, Whitlock, Sale, Story, etc returning, this team could look very different from today in a couple weeks
  22. But I think you’re forgetting the most important thing about Wade Boggs - his role in the sci fi classic “Swamp Shark”!! Watch it on YouTube and you can learn that third base want the only thing Boggs lacked range at!!
  23. I liked in the Yankee night game, when a miked-up Hishagioka (sp?) kept calling him a “professional hitter”…
  24. I’m willing to let Duran play vs LHP; he’s not going to learn to hit LHP by sitting on the bench…
  25. With emphasis on the word “sir”. You can also emphasize “these” or “are.” But probably not “historical” and especially not “facts”…
