  1. Henry didn’t sound like he used to but his firing history is a far cry from being Steinbrenneresque…
  2. Over the next 25 years, Ohtani will make more money than any player in MLB history. I don’t think he supports any “clearly not about the money” argument…
  3. No. They want one NOW. Why fire the guy when he was perfect at attracting blame, something you’re committed would certainly want as it would allow them to engage in sinister acts under cover of the night…
  4. I want to say Dan Quisenberry had a similar deal with KC…
  5. I think the big problem might be the assumption the indecision is solely with the Red Sox. Maybe the slow off-season has returned? The Sox aren’t even remotely the least active team so far. And only 14 of MLBTRs top 50 have signed. The free agent players themselves are just as likely to be the source of the indecision. Many teams, like the Cubs, Brewers and Jays, haven’t made a single move yet this off-season that was even worth trying to recall. It’s slow league-wide. No need to look for the Conspiracy Theory…
  6. If the goal was a committee, why fire Bloom? He was Nature’s Perfect Scapegoat…
  7. I agree with the jad/Barkley point - playing time is more important than winning. No athlete spent his entire life honing his game with the end goal of spending his career watching better players win, but from really good seats…
  8. Ohtani might not be the best argument for “other priorities over money”. I can think of 700 million reasons supporting the opposite…
  9. I’m doing more that making assumptions; I’m making sweeping generalizations. Agree or not - money is the top priority? I’d say the evidence seems to strongly point that way. Yes there are some players with different priorities on occasion. But bear in mind, roughly 20-25% of the league reached free agency each year. So yes, in that volume, there will be exceptions…
  10. He publicly said he would. I assume he did. There may have been some incentive clauses in that deal that he reached as well. I’d be hard pressed to believe Lackey signed that deal and then had a hissy fit because he had to live up to it. Of course I don’t have a job where any drama I create increases my readership…
  11. I think it’s a very small percentage. I’ve told the story of the former Cardinals RP (I think it was Rick White) who negotiated his own deal (as in no agent) with St. Louis because there was a special school in the area that he felt would benefit his son. That kind of thing happens. But it’s minority…
  12. I’m on board with that…
  13. That was more about his not making winning a top priority. And really, the Royals (56-106), Tigers (78-84) and Cardinals (71-91) have all been very active in free agency. Also, if winning was top priority over money, one might suspect Javier Baez would have opted out of Detroit and taken less money to go to a better team. I painted with a broad brush, something I normally abhor. But I do strongly believe money is the largest factor and by a lot in free agency. In many cases, quite possibly the only factor. As for myself, I care about the years more than the money. If you’re going to be a letdown, get it over with quickly…
  14. Nothing will be closed until after the New Year. Book it…
  15. Also ERod turned down a chance to go to the Dodgers at the deadline last year. Winning was not at the top of his list at the time…
  16. Three players signed with Kansas City this week, a team that won 35% of its games a year ago and have not been above .500 since the World Series team of 2015…
  17. There are some less interested in money. But largely it’s the driving force. The players didn’t unionize and the owners don’t hold periodic lockouts to get more teams winning. And also, at the end of the day, it’s also the players’ job…
  18. At some point, Breslow could acquire a 2b or something, just to placate his fanbase. I’d guess right now he is trying for Yamamoto and reluctant to move in the meantime. However Yamamoto has a deadline of Jan.4th (ish) to make his decision, whereupon he will publicly say he is the new property of Steve Cohen. Fortunately other teams that play outside of Los Angeles, Kansas City, Detroit, and St. Louis have been equally and in many cases even more inactive, so the other options once Yamamoto falls through are mostly still in play…
  19. Again, drama totally fabricated by a “desperate for attention” (and potentially illiterate) Tony Massarotti. Lackey never said he wouldn’t honor the deal and in fact said the opposite.
  20. Winning has never mattered to almost all of them. They don’t hire agents to be placed on winning teams. Most of them are egomaniacal enough to think they can turn any team into a winner. (Even if past history says this is obviously false.) But they can’t just say “i want the most money, because it’sa bad look with the fans. So they say they want to win. They don’t mean it. (It can be a tiebreaker if money is equal.)
  21. Unless your pizza box pulls a hammy…
  22. Their healthiest pitcher is Eovaldi!!
  23. They’re probably looking to trade for veteran pitchers.
  24. That’d be the only way to get him. Assuming no kidnapping…
  25. Carlos Baerga has never done any of those things either. Carol Burnett? Jury is still out…
