What was your point? That Betts could have been dealt earlier in a 3 month window if they knew he was gone? Maybe they were talking to teams, but no one was gong to deal until after his final salary was agreed upon (at $25mill). And at that point, interest was fairly minimal, with only 2 teams making reported offers. I would imagine Bloom was doing what any CBO would have done - calling 27 other teams...

There were multiple reports Betts was seeking $400mill, with some going as high as $420mill. Even if that is just a negotiation ploy, it makes a ton of sense to turn down $300mill. What appears to have happened there was Dombrowski either was not allowed to spend more, or he simply used his Plan B, which was to sign Bogaerts and Sale. Fans like to believe the greedy owners are always at fault, but the players are greedy as well. MLB is a $10mill business that a couple thousand people cannot agree on how to divide up amongst themselves without quarreling and threatening to quit every few years. They're all greedy, including the star players...

Exactly what advantage do they get trading Betts in November of 2019 over February of 2020? Those extra 3 months of control are meaningless given the lack of games...

Mike Axisa (formerly of fangraphs and MLBTR) reported on Betts' turning it down for CBS Sports. His quote from Betts on the subject: "I don't regret turning down that," Betts said. "Once I make a decision, I make a decision. I'm not going back and questioning myself. I don't worry about that. The market will be what the market is. We'll just cross that bridge when we get there. But for right now, it's just the safety and health that I'm worried about."

Reportedly DD was shopping him at the 2019 trade deadline. After that, there was a bit of turmoil in the Sox FO, with DD being ushered out and Bloom coming in. Not surprised it took as long as it did...

Others have reported the second. None of them have any real reason to lie about it. Reportedly Betts was asking for $400mill at one point; rejecting $300mill seems like a no-brainer if you set your value that high....

Berbardino isn't a prospect. But his story about how he got to the majors is pretty crazy. He couldn't even get division colleges interested in him, let alone professional teams. And his rejections went on for years. Booser is another cool story considering all the accidents and injuries...

I don't consider Bernardino, Schreiber, Criswell, or Weissert "prospects", but not every new pitcher has to be a prospect. These 4 were all older pitchers all pulled off the scrap heap who proved useful. With Weissert, that probably only applies if jacko was right about him being a DFA candidate...

Fair point. Of course, I named 5 others they passed on who, as far as we know, do not have any issues related to drugs, alcohol and physical abuse. The worst of the bunch is probably Jeffries, but he makes sense given the number of bullpen games the Sox have had already into the season...

Also known as keeping an open mind. Bloom seems like an odd choice, since it seemed like it was over before he got into the picture since Bloom was brought in to get the Sox under the cap. If the Sox wanted to spend, they could have just kept Dombrowski...

There were some stories at the time that Mookie was adamant about testing free agency. Certainly possible, but also possible they were misreported or simply negotiation tactics from his agent...

Maybe he wouldn't. That would make sense if he was told not to spend the money. Turning in your boss as the culprit might help your reputation, but it makes for poor job security. But really, we don't know what happened, or what conversations took place then. What we do know is Dombrowski tried to extend him, but could not get it done. Given that DD was not one to let a budget stand in his way (and still isn't), that strongly suggests Mookie's price to stay was higher than DD was allowed to spend. At that point, Bloom is moot...

And this bothered me all off-season because MLB arms like Eric Lauer, Domingo German, Jake Odorizzi, Zack Davies, Daulton Jeffries, and Adrian Sampson all signed minor league deals. Opportunity was there...

Maybe that talk didn't occur? Certainly the media doesn't know about every conversation between players and management, but that also doesn't mean everything that gets mentioned is true as well. I don't think many, if any, players talk to the CBO/GM about contracts. That's what agents are for, and I'd be surprised if players knew about every conversation their agents had...

I imagine the Sox are going to have to add to the minor league pitching depth in other ways, like they did to get Fitts and Sandlin. If they are sellers at the deadline, any of Jansen, Martin, O’Neill, Pivetta and possibly even Cooper or Chase Anderson could be dealt in trades that may net minor league pitching…

BTV trades are realistic in terms of player cost. They can’t account for team need or team interest. Apparently many teams use similar logic and models on valuing players for trades. But sometimes, need trumps value… -
You really do need to look at the total. Story ($143mill) + Yoshida ($102mill) + Kluber ($10mill) really isn’t close. From a yearly perspective, sure it works out, but only for 5 years and then Betts costs significantly more than those 3. Right?

But there is unrealistic and unlikely. Suggesting the Sox swap Meidroth, Wong, Yorke, Dalbec and Rosier for Spencer Strider is unrealistic because it’s fatally stupid for Atlanta. Trades that work out on BTV aren’t necessarily unrealistic as they are unlikely. There’s a difference… -
Of course getting more Ks than TBs is easy to do. The other ones (more triples than Ks, more HRs than singles) are hard. More HRs than Ks is also hard. But probably been done a few times. Joe DiMaggio’s career totals were very close for HRs and Ks, so he probably did it a few times…
