Why would the Sox bench Rafaela or Abreu when both have options and would benefit from continued play?

Huh? The Sox will have 4 bench spots. One catcher and 3 others. Reyes and Refsnyder very likely take two spots. The final one could be Valdez or Dalbec or other. All the other position players on the 26 man roster will be starting. There will only be 9 others. And it’s very possible not all of three of Duran, Abreu and Rafaela are on the 26 man roster to start. In fact, if Dalbec or Valdez is, it’s a guarantee one of those 3 is in Worcester or traded…

Most of your backups are already playing. The Sox bench is likely to be McGuire, Refsnyder, Reyes and one more…

The actual point was the logic for keeping AAAA talent like Dalbec shouldn’t be “but who else backs up 1b?” The Sox bench will have 3 players covering 8 positions. Chances are there will be gaps or inadequacies and the whole “first base backup” is already getting more chatter than it deserves…

“Backup” doesn’t have to mean “platoon partner”. We just need Valdez/whoever to step in and play 1b if Casas has to leave the game for some reason. Dalbec appears destined for Worcester, which makes it tough for him to fill that role…

Right. Devers just needs more reps at third, a position he’s probably played since childhood. While we are at it, f*** wasting money on Yamamoto, Snell and Montgomery. Why not just give Joe Jacques and Zack Weiss more reps at starting pitcher? Really you just need one to happen. Grissom is already here and unless he’s freakishly incompetent at 2b, he already owns the position. It’s not difficult to not trade Mayer. So that just leaves Story healthy, which is and really always was the only factor that makes him tradable…

Story plus $30mill for Mitch Haniger. Not an exciting trade, but if the goal is to save money, the Sox save about $35mill over the deal and reduce the AAV by about $1.8mill. Haniger is good when healthy, but he’s never healthy…
