  1. Understandable. But two points. 1. Duran still plays there fairly often even now. 2. Duran is a much better at CF than Hamilton is at SS. I keep the fragile O’Neill in the safer LF…
  2. Yes. I don’t know whose idea it was to put Blake Swihart in LF, but if you told me that team also employs a guy who would play Christian Vazquez at 2b, Christian Arroyo in RF, Hunter Renfroe in CF, Justin Turner at 2b, never remove Kike from SS, etc. I might keep him in mind as a suspect. I don’t hold Franchy at 1b against Cora. But the others? Plus all the ones that don’t leap to mind? I can see questioning his commitment to defense…
  3. He missed last year and no one signed him as a free agent. No one signed Elvis Andrus, either. Why is Breslow not on this? Does someone in the Sox org hate Elvis?
  4. Early May? So far he has played one game in Worcester…
  5. But this is also a $6mill AAV on a contract that only runs through his early 30’s. That’s pretty low risk. These days, $6mill gets you Phil Maton, so the Sox might need to use their farm if they want mediocre middle reliever who gives them 60IP…
  6. He probably didn’t care about the farm until they get called up, and he (like many/most managers) probably didn’t get everything his Xmas list. But he’s also shown a questionable commitment to defense in the past, and some folks like to blame it on the people above him, either only giving him so many players or (and no one has ever proven this happens anywhere) ordering him to play certain players out of position. It’s been going on through three CBOs; Cora is the only common link left…
  7. I use them interchangeably. None of us knows the degree of his say, but Cora absolutely is involved in those activities to some extent. Every manager is. They have to be. The principle of inter-office communication and its benefits has surely reached MLB by now. Also, Houston hired Cora for a lot of his input, and he wasn’t even a manager there. But they were interested in his extensive knowledge about analytics. Boston undoubtedly wanted his input as well. If you think Cora is just working with what they give him, you’re operating on an agenda…
  8. No doubt. It’s probably not possible to accommodate all his wishes. The CBO can only work within his budget. But that doesn’t mean Cora has no input…
  9. Carlos Correa to the IL. With Royce Lewis also injured, the Twins infielder depth is also taxed. Utility players Willi Castro and Kyle Farmer are now in starting roles. Neither is a defensive whiz. So basically the injured SS market is heating up…
  10. Justifying his inactivity?
  11. I think he gives significant input as to what he needs/wants. And Breslow does his best to fill those needs within the budget. And sometimes players have to move on to adjust that budget. Cora probably has some input there as well. But it’s limited. Basically, I mean, another team has to want the player, too. But I doubt Cora ever wakes up, scrolls to MLBTR, and sees some Red Sox roster transaction he never saw coming. Never…
  12. That barely says anything. It implies Breslow said the primary position would be CF, but didn’t even say what exactly that means. And later quotes Breslow saying he’d be moved around the diamond. It credits Cora with the dual platoon of no-hit defensive question marks. And as Romy is part of that, is he back now? Or is this article older?
  13. Do you think Breslow doesn’t talk to him at all? Just surprises him with moves? Maybe makes brain teasers out of them? “Hey Alex, quick riddle. What has a busted elbow and just got traded for Vaughn Grissom?”
  14. If I had Breslow’s job? 1. Suggest Rafaela move to SS temporarily. His primary position will be CF, but he’s under control for 8 more years; playing SS for a month or two won’t kill his development. 2. Demote Hamilton and recall Refsnyder. The OF alignment would be O’Neill in LF, Duran in CF, Abreu/Refsnyder in RF. 3. Count the minutes until the essentially useless Enmanuel Valdez can be demoted and replaced with Vaughn Grissom. Hope Cora starts Reyes over Valdez. 4. Be ready to claim any defense-oriented shortstops on the waiver wire. Maybe even work out a trade if possible.
  15. I seriously doubt any MLB manager has no input in roster construction. And I’d be very surprised if that hasn’t been true for a long time. Cora doesn’t negotiate any deals, but he certainly has to have input…
  16. 2. No one is buying or selling yet. Short term contracts like these might not be in demand 3. Pay for whose bench bat? And with what? We can’t chastise the Red Sox for not having a backup SS and then expect some other team to deal theirs away mindlessly. The SS options are largely limited to internal right now. The Sox recently passed on Livan Soto on the waiver wire so they’ll have to see what else presents itself there. Others will as team replace injured players with non-40 man alternatives. And as May 1 approaches, it’s quite possible some shortstops on minor league deals invoke their upward mobility clauses…
  17. Where did Breslow say that? I haven’t been able to find anything…
  18. The Sox could use: 1b: Casas 2b: Reyes for now 3b: Devers SS: Rafaela LF: O’Neill CF: Duran RF: Abreu It’s probably their best defensive alignment internally…
  19. I’ve never heard that. Cora has been adamant that Rafaela is his CF since before Breslow was hired. Although he’d probably put Rafaela at SS to give Hamilton a scheduled off day…
  20. Think Cora ever tries Rafaela at SS?
  21. And in 2023, Dalbec is 0 for 9 with 6 Ks. Small sample size but almost perfect in ineptitude...
  22. Kike was given MONTHS to show he couldn’t play shortstop. Hamilton has played 4 games. Gonzalez in two. Not the same level of status quo at all…
  23. Well they’ve been more successful against Dalbec…
  24. Because every time someone mentions Grissom, someone freaks out and overreacts and accuses them of annoying this got as the savior. No one is, but he is part of the future just like those three should be..
