  1. His 3.32 ERA is largely carried by what he did in Tampa and Detroit. His 3.84 ERA in Boston was respectable. But at age 31, it was the a wrong time to give him the largest and longest contract in team history. Especially with all the young talent the Six had that could have been extended (assuming they were amenable). And Price was great his first year, but his last 3 were mediocre at best. In 4 full seasons in Boston, Price was only worth 10.3 fWAR, 4.4 of which came in his first year. Over that stretch, he was outperformed by Rick Porcello, who signed a shorter, cheaper deal at a younger age. In the end, the Price contract was part of the huge salary mess that lead to dismantling the 2018 team in favor of the cheaper, less effective team you see today…
  2. Absolutely. Of course, trying to extend him is meaningless until it happens. Angelos probably never would have extended. The new owners are complete unknowns, so anything is possible. If nothing else, new ownership should get bonus points for making a splash literally on Day One…
  3. Agreed, but right now that’s how the depth chart lines up. I’m still hopeful for a Montgomery, who, let’s face it, had to sign somewhere. At a minimum get another relief arm and hopefully they don’t rely on Criswell or Max Castillo to hold firm his pen spot…
  4. I’m not wild about any of Houck, Whitlock or Wink bring in the rotation. But if they are, hopefully Breslow at least gets a reliever to backfill their spot(s) in the bullpen…
  5. I have a feeling with already have the guy, and his name rhymes with Tanner Houck...
  6. SAying Burnes will explore the market simpy means he is not signing unless you blow him away right now with roughly the same money he would expect to make as a free agent. This isn't a simple case here...
  7. Agreed. If Baltimore extends him, it will something in the neighborhood of Gerrit Cole money.
  8. That second part about the offer he likes is a little more complicated than you imply here.
  9. No. Burnes has had two arbitration fights with Milwaukee that he lost and has been rather public with his feeling he is grossly underpaid. His top priority is clearly lots and lots of money, and he switched to Boras as his agent this year, which certainly is a step in that direction. If Burnes extends with Baltimore, it will be solely because they met his demands, not because the team does well. He also has a huge advantage over Montgomery and Snell in that he can wait 9 months to make up his mind...
  10. The trade was for one year of Burnes, regardless of extension. Why is anyone assuming they gave up very little to get him?
  11. They gave up two Baseball America Top 100 prospects for one year of a pitcher…
  12. … which also begs the question “What have they done to get the defense back to normal?”
  13. I would assume they’d prefer to just extend Burnes first…
  14. Someone feel free to verify my math. I would argue getting 3 outs without giving up 3 runs doesn’t qualify as a close game. But in the 91 saves awarded in Red Sox games last year (to both Sox and opponent), 9 of them - roughly 10% - were in games decided by 5 or more…
  15. Using wins to evaluate pitchers is like using runs scored to evaluate hitters. I mean, the object is to score runs, right? And saves are massively overrated. Possibly the second most overrated stat in all of sports, behind only Blown Saves. (Also that’s not always what a save represents.)
  16. That entire list except Scherzer and Webb has had TJ surgery since that season. And Webb’s case, it might only be because he hasn’t had a chance yet…
  17. But he might get 175-180 of those 200 IP….
  18. I think I’m 1973, half the pitchers on the league had 35 decisions. Fergie Jenkins was 14-16 that year. Tied for 13th in MLB in losses. Tied for 35th (
  19. Over the last two seasons: Blake Snell 22-19 Jordan Montgomery 19-17 Aaron Nola 23-22 Shohei Ohtani 25-14 Sonny Gray 16-13 Apparently every team in MLB made some crazy choice by avoiding Wacha to focus on these pitchers. I assume you’ll be putting heavy money on the Royals in 2024, with their staff anchored by Wacha (25-6) and Kyle Wright (22-8), both clearly better than all the pitchers above…
  20. Lauer to me is like Plan C. Montgomery is top choice, but I get passing if his demands are crazy or you like next year’s class better. Clevinger is Plan B. Then Lauer. Or do something Bloom always avoided doing - sign a reliever to backfill Houck’s spot in the pen
  21. So those deals do work out for future Hall of Famers…
  22. I didn’t like it from Day One. I wasn’t in this forum back then but my exact thoughts were I would have preferred extending Betts. (Of course back then, Betts’ thoughts on the subject were an even bigger mystery.)
  23. Actually I just read “Cheated” and I’m questioning why Cora is allowed to manage…
  24. “Apologists” is a term used by arrogant, narrow-minded people who don’t acknowledge alternative viewpoints, and therefore think any and all opposing views are held by people who actually feel they need to express remorse for their disagreements and lack of supporting conviction. “Apologists” only exist in the eye of the beholder…
  25. And that guy is Blake Snell’s dad!!!
