I think if you trade Chapman, you need to replace him internally. A closer that “isn’t 37” and has additional control likely costs as much or more in prospects than the Sox will get for Chapman, making it at best a break even on the “gold mine.” Unless the new closer sucks, I suppose… -
Since he traded Devers, claimed it wouldn’t derail the season, and was right, I find it hard to believe Chapman is untouchable…

1. It appears as though Cease’s availability exists and is not a Red Sox fan fabrication. Given their commitment to getting cheaper and their bleak farm system, young MLB or MLB-ready players do make sense for them both this year and beyond. 2. I had questions about the same thing. Some possibilities include: 1. Hamilton hits left-handed and Cora loves platoons. If the Sox do acquire a 1b, this leaves a spot vs LHP for Romy. 2. Putting Rafaela at 2b, while certainly not ideal, does solve the OF depth issues. 3. Showcasing Hamilton for a trade. This seems least plausible given the year Hes having at the plate. Those are the best I got…

And yet the Sox have more wins. By the way, why is the Sox situation a hole when Chapman misses two games, yet the Rangers dont have a hole there despite, well, who is their closer? (Hint: not team save leader Luke Jackson, who is in Detroit now.) And their #4 and #5 starter slots aren’t any better than ours. Tyler Mahle was good, but he made his annual trip to the 60 day IL a couple weeks ago. Also Josh Jung and his 0.7 bWAR should be a hole, too…

Most deals happen July 31. There have only been a handful of deals so far, and really only one potential Sox target. Two if you think Nick Fortes should have been on their radar. The problem the Sox (and most teams) have is the selling teams are in absolutely no rush to make deals and start losing more often even sooner. They can afford to wait out best offers. There is some risk if a player gets hurt or gets involved in gambling, however…
